What is lava clay?

Lava clay* has nothing to do with volcanoes. Lava is derived from lavare ab. This is Latin and means wash. In fact lava clay is simply Alumina, which is suitable for washing.

Lava clay, also known as Ghassoul, comes from North African climes. It does not come from volcanoes. But for this From Morocco. There it is mined in the Atlas Mountains. Among locals, it has been a popular cleaning agent for many centuries.

Lava clay is a natural product that is completely free of chemical additives. You will find neither fragrances, dyes, nor preservatives in it. For this Minerals like magnesium. Also, the earth is rich in iron, calcium and silicon.

It is also free of surfactants. These ensure that it foams. Surfactants are not only found in conventional shampoos. They are also present in dishwashing and laundry detergents.

Why Lava clay cleans instead of getting dirty is simple. The reason for this is a physical principle. Before washing hair with lava clay, you add a little water.

The water swells the clay. This creates a gel-like consistency. The particles in the earth have a high exchange capacity. This means that they Dirt and Fat soak up. The cleaning is so mildthat the natural fat layer of skin and hair is preserved in the process.

Is lava clay good for hair?

Where to buy lava clay?

I ordered the lava clay from Amazon. You can find some good brands here. I like to trust the reviews. That is why I have for the product from cosmundi decided.

By the way, the 1 kg package is very productive. After 3 months I have only used half.

What do I need to consider when washing my hair with lava clay?

Before you pamper your mane with clay, I want to give you a few tips and tricks along the way. You'll be very grateful for this, I didn't know this before because no one pointed it out to me. Good to know:

The right mixing ratio

I have been on the lookout for a wide variety of recipes. Everyone likes the Consistency different on the head. For me, it's clear that I'm not the liquid type. Best you test yourself through what works well.

If you have very short hair, you will certainly do better with a firmer clay than someone with very long hair. With curly hair you do yourself also certainly easier with a thin liquid mixing ratio.

Hair brushing

Before going into the shower, brush test you again thoroughly the hair. This stimulates the hair roots. And it ensures that no unpleasant lumps are formed when washing hair with lava clay.

By the way, you should do this even if you do not use clay for hair, but only classic shampoo.

Hair look dull

In the beginning I always felt my hair a little blunt. I came across this tip on the Worldwideweb:

Acid rinse! This helps to Hair dandruff at close. This will give them more shine. For this you need 1-2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar to 1 liter of water.

Who is interested in Cold water can even increase the gloss. Once you have Acid rinse over the head, the shower fun is over. The rinse remains in the hair. Towel over it and you're done.

Here you can read more details about acid rinse.

Doesn't vinegar and clay stink? No, it actually doesn't! You might find it hard to believe. The smell of lava clay disappears quite quickly on dry hair. The scent of vinegar also dissipates quickly.

Of course, the hair does not smell like unicorns and shooting stars. But you haven't shot them full of chemicals and done something really good for them.

Lava clay in the shower

Plan on 1-2 minutes longer to remove the lava clay residue from the shower. This looks unappetizing and exhausting. But goes quite quickly, as long as the puddle is still wet.

Rinse with plenty of warm water to prevent the soil from drying.

Clay for the skin

I also love to use the lava clay for my skin. Everything that does not find room on my head ends up in the Face and on my Cleavage.

I leave it there for a short time until I have rinsed my hair.

When it is already quite Slightly dried is, it gives a wonderful exfoliating effect. It also provides the skin with important minerals. Supposedly, it also prevents wrinkles. I can not say anything about this just yet.

A little help: generously leave out the eyes, mouth and nose. Feels like grains of sand. And anyone who has ever been to the beach knows how annoying that is!

The paste absorbs excess oil from the skin and has a soothing effect on blemished skin. A true anti-pimple mix!

Washing hair with lava clay: Instruction

Loosen your muscles, shake out your legs and let's go! For washing hair with lava clay you need a small bowl. Also, water from the tap and a non-metallic spoon you can buy online.

Important! The lava clay must not come into contact with metallic objects! Important minerals would otherwise lose their effect.

Basic recipe

Stir the paste even before showering, then the water and clay can combine well.

Depending on your hair type and length, you may need more or less lava clay hair conditioner. As a basis applies:

  • 1 tablespoon lava clay
  • 1 tsp water

Mix these two ingredients in a bowl and mix with a wooden spoon.

I add the water little by little. Some mix it 1:1, the next take double the amount. Some like it hot, I like it lukewarm.

Have you mixed everything well? Then I recommend that you let it stand for a short time. This allows the water to combine well with the clay. And then you can start.

Wash hair with lava clay: Application

  • After brushing, you wet the hair.
  • Squeeze out the excess water.
  • Spread the lava clay in your hands and massage it in.
  • Start from the scalp and apply the paste to the ends of the hair.
  • Massage them especially well into the scalp, this provides better blood circulation and can even reduce the Positively influence hair growth.

After 2 to 3 minutes, rinse the clay with lukewarm water. You may have to rinse more often until everything is free of soil. Therefore, if you have very long and thick hair, it is often better to bend your head over the bathtub than to stand under the shower as a whole.

Somewhat unusual that it not foaming. And it feels a little earthy. It also smells a bit like grandma's garden. But don't let that put you off.

Maybe you will also find Hair masks on the Internet. With these, the lava clay should remain on the head for a few minutes. My rest-blond hair with a penchant for nesting do not like that at all. But as we all know, the proof of the pudding is in the eating. (Small anecdote from the inexhaustible phrase repertoire of my grandma.) ;)

I am unfortunately not blessed with a Shakira mane. My hair is thin and mostly powerless.

In addition, they become greasy quite quickly and tend to Split ends. But with lava clay they have recovered well. Even years of bleaching they slowly forgive me.

Since I use lava clay, they work full and see a lot healthier off. Even my split ends have reduced. At the same time they are much softer.

And best of all, I have to wash them less often. 3 months ago, I reached for the shampoo every day. Today it is enough Every three days wash my hair with lava clay.

Find out here if it's worth it, to make the hair greasy.

How good is lava clay compared to hair shampoo?

Clay is a very natural way to clean the skin and hair. It is free from all additives and does not attack the scalp. It lasts longer until the hair becomes greasy again. Overall, you do not have to wash your mane as often.

This saves a lot of time and water. If you have short hair and don't use too much, you can get by with one kilogram of lava clay for a year.

The consistency is rather unfamiliar at first, but you quickly adjust to it.

What else can you use lava clay for?

Lava clay cleanses naturally, thoroughly and mildly. It preserves the natural acid mantle of the skin. During use, the skin and hair are never completely degreased - as is the case with aggressive shampoos.

Those who have sensitive skin quickly react irritated in the face. Redness, more pimples, very oily skin and itching can occur. Since these aggressive additives are missing in the earth, this will not happen to you here.

On the face, you benefit from the fact that the skin becomes pore-deep clean without being strained. Brown lava clay is ideal for impure skin. If you have very sensitive skin, try white lava clay.

Clay is used in many DIY hair masks -. as with this homemade hair treatment. Others swear by it in the spring, to be able to lose weight with healing clay.

And if it has to go very quickly, you can use them in the form of Massage dry shampoo into greasy hair. This way you can get at least a day of extra time before you have to wash the mane.

My conclusion

It takes a bit of practice to find the right mix. But once you've tested yourself out and gotten used to the new wash habits, it's great. Your hair will thank you. I am convinced of that.

Have fun trying it out!
