Blonding your own hair is not an art. I'll tell you tips and tricks with which you too can quickly become a blonde. Become platinum blonde now - without a yellow tint.

What have I not already gone through everything with hair colors - from blond to black and then of course back again as quickly as possible, red, copper and much more.

Sometimes I had my hair dyed at the hairdresser, sometimes I did it myself ... and what can I say, of course, some things went wrong.

But let's start from the beginning. For a good three quarters of a year, I've been trying to get the perfect platinum blonde to achieve. Gaaaanz easy I thought - but there I was more than wrong.

My medium blond hair is actually the perfect starting point. But only if you know how to blond hair yourself!

And I, of course, did not know. But as curious and eager to experiment as I am, I wanted to try it myself, of course. So off to the drugstore, bought blonde and off I went.

Experiment 1: Hair bleaching - This is not how it works

I have treated myself to 2 packs for my long and extremely thick hair. Just as it said in the instructions.

I have left out my roots, because I prefer the natural balayage look. After a good 45 min. exposure time (the half hour that I needed to apply not included) I could then wash my hair and blow dry.

Excited I stood in front of the mirror. And then the shock... Orange and yellow instead of platinum blond. Looked more like I had fries red and white on the head. But at least I still had hair 😁

From then on, I knew that bleaching hair myself would not be easy.

There are two options: Either I go to the hairdresser I trust or get better information and try again. I decided on the latter.

It would be a laugh if I could not dye my hair blonde myself!

Bleaching the hair yourself: Experiment 2 - now everything will be better!

I have learned and upgraded my range. The last half year I have tried countless products, variations and techniques.

My hair didn't really want to lighten, you often hardly noticed a difference. Then all of a sudden it clicked - with the right products, the right technique and a few tricks I could finally get my Blond hair yourself - and the result was the perfect cool, icy platinum blonde I've been dreaming of for so long!

For my poor hair and me it was a lengthy procedure. I would like to spare you that!

I tell you my exclusive tips on how to blond hair yourself!

Caution: I am not a hairdresser, I just do it myself because I enjoy it. I've done a lot of reading up and getting advice. I am happy to pass on these tips. But I can't give you a guarantee that it will be as perfect on you as it is on me. Every hair is different.

If you're as unteachable as I am and would like to do it yourself, I'm going to give you a step by step tutorial.

Blond hair yourself: The ultimate formula

1. the preparations for dyeing blonde

It works best on natural, undyed hair. But don't worry, I haven't seen my natural hair color in years and it still works.

The darker the color of your hair, the more difficult, lengthy and damaging it will be for your hair. If your hair is medium brown to black, it's best to go to a hairdresser! Really!

Blond hair yourself

Otherwise, you can continue here 🙂 .

Start preparing your mane intensively a month before you want to blonde your hair yourself and go platinum blonde.

Ban any further dyeing, your Straightening iron / curling iron and best of all your Hair dryer from the bathroom.

Use nourishing shampoos, conditioners and hair treatments. For the healthier your hair is, so uniform and more gentle will be the whole procedure!

Coconut oil-almond oil night cure

Blond hair yourself

Use this miracle treatment for your hair once a week. For this cure you do not need much - but it helps so well that I do it every weekend.

I ordered the ingredients from Amazon in larger quantities because I use them regularly and also like to prepare DIY cosmetics from them.

Bring the Coconut oil* to melt and mix it with the Almond oil*.

Let the mixture cool to room temperature.

Massage the cure into unwashed, dry hair. Your hair should literally drip with fat!

Distribute everything evenly. Comb the hair. The oil makes the comb literally glide through the mane.

Tie your hair into a loose chignon.

To keep from spilling all over your poor pillow, put a turban or shower cap over your head. This looks anything but sexy, trust me, but your hair will thank you!

Now you go to sleep normally. The next day, wash your hair as usual and marvel at your soft, shiny hair!

2. a few days before blond hair yourself

Wash your hair at least 2 days before the dyeing process not more. The natural fat layer protects your hair from the aggressive hydrogen.

Take enough time for your coloring day, I always need at least 3 hours until I am completely finished! And there is nothing worse when blonding hair yourself than stress!

Now is the time to stock up on the right products.

What you need to bleach your hair yourself

I have tried many products - from cheap drugstore brands to luxury hairdressing products. Very important: Please keep your hands off the drugstore stuff!

Most of the time, they have far too high a hydrogen peroxide content and lighten your hair with aggressive substances. What you're left with is hopefully your hair - but in a tone you probably didn't want.

Professional hairdressing products are a bit more expensive, but the quality is unbeatable and you have much more choice than in the drugstore.

Dye hair platinum blonde

For your dyeing process, you will need a few small products. They are usually only available in large quantities, but you will certainly use them up.

The following products are absolutely necessary. I give you my recommendation on brands and products that I find particularly good. With these I have finally achieved my dream hair color, but before that I had to learn that some products do not deliver what they promise:

Attention to the correct dose

Somewhat tricky is the correct percentage of hydrogen peroxide in the developer. There are 2%, 6%, 9% and 12%. I go never about 6%, I would leave that to the hairdresser.

6% lightens your hair a few levels. If you're a medium blonde like me, you'll probably get the platinum blonde you want.

If you are darker, you may have to dye again in a few weeks. But believe me, that's better than handling 9% or even 12%. Anything from burnt scalp to a chemical haircut (your hair completely breaking off) is possible.

I tend to be overly cautious - sometimes I have mixed 6% and 2% developer and that has been perfectly sufficient. Please always mix only developers of the same brand!

Now you have your both basic products. But that's not the end of it. Probably your result will be a more or less pronounced yellow tone.

This is normal to a certain extent, because the lightening of the hair always goes from dark to yellow to white.

For your hair to turn white using only lighteners (which is possible), you'll need to use hydrogen peroxide more often and at a higher percentage. But this is a tightrope walk. If your hair is almost white only due to lightening, it has hardly any substance left - hair breakage is inevitable.

But then what? The solution, which also works hairdressers and is absolutely indispensable, is Toner! With it, your hair will become platinum blonde instead of banana yellow! There are either direct pulls (caring, without developer) or tints (with little hydrogen peroxide, longer lasting).

Take a look at the article by my colleague Lydia: I dyed my hair with natural hair color - this is what happened!

Platinum blonde self blonde

This has been the hardest part for me - choosing the right toner. I have tried about 8 different ones and only now found my absolute favorite! Here are my products used and my recommendation:

  • Goldwell Colorance 10V - my clear favorite! This was the only tint from which I really got my much desired platinum blonde hair! The hair did not get darker, but super white with a cool shimmer! You can leave this toner on for a long time - I always do 10 minutes and with any developer with 3%. Another plus - it smells really good!
  • Blondme Ice Toner - provides a cool blond after bleaching. Had I often, but was never really satisfied - even after only 5 min exposure time were my beautifully lightened hair significantly darker and it seemed somehow "dirty". Neutralizes but good.
  • Wella T18 - THE favorite of the bloggers. I found hundreds of positive reviews, but I did not like him at all. He is mixed with 6%, which is already an imposition for freshly bleached hair. The result was extremely silver, but again too dark. And he smells strongly of chemistry.
  • Loreal Dialight Milkshake - same as most others, the hair was cool, but again significantly darker and unfortunately no trace of platinum blonde.
  • Directions Silver - since also swear many on it, but with me personally did unfortunately also after 1 hour of exposure time only little, the hair was slightly silvery, but after a hair wash the silver shimmer was gone
  • Directions White - had no effect at all with me, the purple ingredient is simply too low doses for my hair

Try best the Goldwell toner - it does not damage the hair and was the only one that gave me a perfect result!

What else you need

You must have heard of Olaplex or Fibreplex heard - an absolute miracle product that protects and cares for the hair even during the bleaching process and afterwards. Unfortunately, this is a bit too expensive for me, so I have as an alternative a similar product from Elkaderm ordered from Amazon. I am completely thrilled with it. It is also the price-performance winner in tests.

Together with the Coconut oil*-hair care, you are on the safe side with these products when bleaching your hair yourself. They prevent damaged hair and hair breakage. I'm the best example - I've bleached my hair 6 times in the last 9 months and it's still alive!

Now you have almost everything - but you still need a few little things. I have bought everything you need online and have provided you with a link.

And now it can finally start!

3. the night before X day: my secret tip

Now comes one of my absolute insider tips: The night before your upcoming dyeing process, use once again our Coconut oil*-Cure - but without Almond oil*, this time only pure Coconut oil*!

The oil remains in your hair even during the bleaching process. I've been doing it this way for half a year, because the method has many advantages:

  • your hair is easy to comb during bleaching even with the color mixture
  • the coconut oil penetrates deep into the hair structure and protects the hair already during bleaching from damage
  • your hair feels less broken and dry after bleaching
  • the hair shines great afterwards and is easy to comb

Do not worry, the bleaching process or the degree of lightening is in no way negatively affected by the oil. I was initially afraid that it does not work and my hair did not become lighter.

The opposite was the case: it seems to me that it speeds up the process a bit and the hair feels a lot better than without coconut oil!

4. the day of transformation - so you blond your hair yourself

So, you are prepared. Your hair is nicely oiled and you've taken your time. All your bleaching agents are ready - very good!

Blond hair yourself: Mix the blonde

First mix your blonde together - at the Blonding from BlondmeI use 1 part of the powder and 1.5 to 2.5 parts of the developer.

Plus there is the protection of Elkaderm - how much varies depending on the amount of blonde you have. But do not worry, it's all on the packaging 😊

Apply the paint

Once you have mixed everything together, it's time for application. Depending on whether you want to do the whole head, just the roots, strands or balayage, you apply the color to the desired areas.

You should do this as soon as possible, otherwise the bleach will stay on some areas much longer than the last ones you painted in.

Make sure you use too much blonde rather than too little - otherwise it could get blotchy if some areas don't get any of the blonde.

At the back of the head you can best be helped by a friend (better not by the boyfriend - they have little patience, I have tried it 😁)

Our reader Ronja has made it. The result is really mega :)

Let the platinum blonde color soak in

When you're done, put on a shower cap - the blonde only works when it's wet!

If you leave your hair in the air, the bleach could dry out and stop working. Then the hair will not be so bright or orange - I always made the mistake in the beginning and wondered why they do not become really bright.

Leave the paint on for as long as it says on the package - but please never longer than an hour!

Rinse paint

After that, it's time to rinse. After most of the stuff is out, wash your hair with a mild shampoo.

Now your hair is probably still yellowish - to a certain extent, this can not be prevented. That's why the toner comes into play now!

Tint hair

After bleaching is before tinting. This is an extremely important step that many omit and are surprised that the blonde does not look as desired.

Let your hair air dry or blow dry it a bit so that it is almost dry. Depending on the toner you have, you need to add developer cream.

With my Favorite toner from Goldwell I mixed a 3% developer from the house brand in the barbershop supply store. I then let this soak in for 10 minutes.

After that you need to wash your hair again with a mild shampoo. After shampooing, apply Elkaderm hair conditioner (or another hair conditioner if you have worked without Elkaderm) and wait for 5 minutes.

Rinse and et voila - you're finally done!

Yes, that was a mammoth task. I hope my tips could help you!

I really wanted to share it with you because I also searched so long for the right procedure and products and now I finally have my dream hair color.

My conclusion
