Alkaline foods help you balance and prevent hyperacidity. These are the best foods for acid-alkaline balance.

Are you tired, have no healthy appetite and somehow always irritable? Then maybe you have heartburn, flatulence, headaches and blemished skin at the same time?

All of this may indicate that you are not eating enough alkaline foods.

Your acid-base balance may be out of whack.

A change of diet will bring you new energy and let the symptoms subside. Today we would like to tell you how alkaline foods can influence your everyday life and what you need to know about them.

What are alkaline foods?

Alkaline foods are all foods that our body metabolizes to bases.

That sounds a bit complicated and like chemistry class, doesn't it? It is.

More specifically, biochemistry.

With the alkaline diet is about evaluating foods not only according to fat, protein and carbohydrates. But according to whether they form bases or acids in the body.

Therefore, a distinction is also made between acid-forming and alkaline foods.

Ideally, the diet should consist of 70 to 80 percent alkaline foods and 20 to 30 percent acid-forming foods.

Very roughly speaking, all foods act alkaline the,

  • not contain animal protein.
  • are of plant origin. Especially roots, leaves and flowers.
  • Fruits, herbs, seeds or seedlings are.

The exception is asparagus, artichokes and buds such as Brussels sprouts.

How do I get my body alkaline again?

If you eat too many acid-forming substances for a long time, you should definitely try to get back into acid-alkaline balance. To get the body alkaline again, you should drink a lot of water and unsweetened herbal teas. It helps you to neutralize and eliminate acids.

In addition, a lot of alkaline vegetables should be on the menu.

Which foods have a strong alkaline effect?

Vegetables in particular are said to have a high alkaline effect. Spinach, carrots, celery, dark lettuce, cauliflower, fresh peas, tomatoes, cucumbers, beet, bananas and white beans have a strong alkaline effect.

Most fruits are only weakly to moderately alkaline.

What is the most alkaline food?

The most alkaline food is dried fruit. However, because they should only be eaten in small quantities due to their high fructose content, fresh spinach tops the list of the most alkaline foods. It is excellent for anyone who wants to get their acid-base balance under control.

What makes alkaline food?

Foods that are alkaline and healthy have an alkalizing effect on several levels.

1. alkaline foods contain alkaline minerals

Foods that contain many alkaline minerals and have a very low protein content are alkalized in the body.

Alkaline minerals are mainly potassium, sodium, magnesium and calcium.

Very roughly speaking, this applies to fruits, vegetables, seeds and herbs.

Above all, the potassium content of the food determines whether it is alkaline food or not.

But that doesn't mean that you should only eat foods rich in potassium now. A balanced diet is very important.

2. alkaline foods help to detoxify

Bitters are mega healthy. For our liver, kidneys and bile. Many alkaline foods provide bitter substances that stimulate alkaline formation in the body.

But also antioxidants, vitamins, phytochemicals and others. All this strengthens our detoxification organs and supports the immune system.

This allows our body to neutralize and eliminate excess acids and waste products.

And this leads to the fact that our body does not overacidify so easily.

3. they contain hardly any acid-forming amino acids

Foods that have an acid-forming effectcontain the amino acids methionine and cysteine. You can find them in meat, fish, eggs, Brazil nuts, sesame and soy.

When they decompose bodies, sulfuric acid is formed.

4. alkaline foods contain a lot of water

We all drink far too little. But our body needs a lot of liquid so that it can get rid of toxins.

That's why you'll find a lot of water in most alkaline foods.

5. alkaline foods are anti-inflammatory

This is due to their high content of vital substances and antioxidants, as well as the right fatty acids.

It is now assumed that many diseases of civilization such as rheumatism, arteriosclerosis or diabetes can be traced back to an incorrect diet.

Initial studies show that affected people have too many acid-forming and too few alkaline foods in their diet during their lifetime as well as at the current time.

Delicious alkaline foods you should know about

The PRAL value (Potential Renal Acid Load) is used to define alkaline foods. It can be used to determine whether foods have an acid-forming or alkaline-forming effect on the body. The PRAL value shows the potential acid load of food on the kidneys.

It makes it possible to compare foods with each other. Foods with a negative PRAL value lower the acid load and have an alkaline effect on our body. The lower the value, the more acids are balanced.

Alkalizing agents (alkaline foods) are

  • Vegetables
  • Fruit
  • Herbs
  • Mushrooms
  • Seedlings
  • Seeds and kernels

Can I snack on an alkaline diet?

If you've taken a close look at the list, you'll notice that sugar, white flour and co. are missing. Everything you need for snacking and a delicious cake. Or? It also goes differently :)

How about a delicious, alkaline cake?

For the base of the alkaline cake, simply use almonds or nuts of your choice. To increase the alkaline potential of the ingredients, soak the seeds in water for a day.

Then grind them and put them in a bowl. Mix a freshly squeezed orange juice and pitted dates. Add this mixture to the ground nuts. Form all ingredients into a ball.

Put the ball on a cake plate and spread it to a 1.5 to 2 cm high base. You can then refine the base as you like (Cinnamon*, vanilla, grated orange peel, coconut flakes)

For the topping, simply use seasonal fruits. Make fruit pulp from them and spread it on the cake base. Now spread pineapple pieces, berries, peaches, apple rings on it.

Note that the cake is fragile because of its consistency. So you can hardly put it on another cake plate. If you have a dehydrator, you can put the cake in it until it becomes more solid. Of course, you can also do this in the oven at a very low heat.

What is the difference between an alkaline diet and an excess alkaline diet?

They are one and the same, aren't they? No, not at all. You should not see an alkaline diet as a permanent diet.

The alkaline diet is wonderful for fasting or deacidification. You should follow it for a maximum of 4 to 12 weeks. You do not consume any acid-forming foods. Over a long period of time, an alkaline diet is healthier.

With the alkaline-surplus diet, you may also eat acid-forming foods. Not all acid-forming foods are bad.

Why is alkaline nutrition worthwhile?

Alkaline nutrition is usually associated with a detoxification cure. You may also be familiar with alkaline fasting. In both cases, you eat a purely alkaline diet for a short time and thus bring the acid-base balance into balance.

After the cure, you switch back to a normal diet, but continue to make sure that alkaline foods predominate. This is known as an alkaline-surplus diet.

So, alkaline diet helps us to normalize the acid-base balance in the body. Acids and harmful substances should be balanced by this form of nutrition.

Why you should combine acid-forming and alkaline foods

An acid-forming food should always be combined with alkaline ones. Acid-forming foods are not bad and unhealthy per se.

A good example are nuts and legumes. Both are acid-forming, but at the same time very healthy. Our tip: Combine nuts with alkaline fruit.

Since when does the acid-base theory exist?

The inventor of the acid-base theory was the Swedish chemist Carl Gustav Ragnar Berg. He devoted many researches and studies to alkaline foods and their effect.

He came to the conclusion that our body can only make optimal use of nutrients if an excess of bases prevails. In 1913, he published the first acid-base table.

His dietary recommendation was to eat 5x more alkaline foods than acids.

This theory was further screwed and researched. Until 1995 a new table was brought into being. With this table one could calculate, which now, how foods affect our body.

More precisely, from now on it was possible to calculate with the PRAL value how high the acid load is for the kidney. And thus whether the food is acidic or alkaline.

Our conclusion

Even though this misconception is still very widespread, alkaline foods are more than just water and salad. It is not about eating only alkaline foods, but about eating less acidic foods such as meat, animal products, sugar and white flour.

Enjoy it!
