DIY Massage Oil Instructions

What base oils are suitable for making massage oil yourself?

Your massage oil consists mostly of base oil. Always choose an organic quality oil that has been cold pressed.

But which one is the best for making massage oil? You have a very wide choice of possible vegetable oils.

All of them have a slightly different effect on the skin. Basically, you can use any of these oils to make your own massage oil. Just pick one and you're ready to go.

Base oil Main type
Avocado oil* Rough, very dry skin
Jojoba oil* Dry skin
Coconut oil* Irritated, flaky, dry skin
Almond oil* Sensitive, irritated, very dry skin
Olive oil Dry skin
Sesame oil Dry skin with poor circulation
Grape seed oil* Very dry skin

Avocado oil

is very well tolerated by all skin types. It is also very suitable for very sensitive skin to make massage oil itself. The ingredients of this oil promote cell regeneration of the skin. Avocado oil* absorbs very well into the skin and is light green to slightly yellowish.

Jojoba oil

is perfect for massage oils that need to be particularly fragrant. This is because it has a very faint odor of its own. It is therefore ideal for mixing with essential oils of all kinds. The advantage of Jojoba oil* is that it has a longer shelf life compared to other oils.

Coconut oil

is the classic when it comes to natural cosmetics. It smells incredibly good of coconut. It is essential to keep this in mind when mixing homemade massage oils. At room temperature is Coconut oil* liquid, when it gets cooler, it becomes Coconut oil* fixed. The disadvantage of Coconut oil* is that it is absorbed very quickly, so it is only suitable for longer massages to a limited extent.

Almond oil

is my favorite when it comes to making massage oil. The oil has a pleasant marzipan scent, is easy to spread on the skin and has perfect gliding properties for massages.

Olive oil

has a medium to strong aroma of its own. It should therefore only be combined with oils that do not have such a strong scent. Lemon, ginger and olive oil complement each other very well. Olive oil is absorbed slowly into the skin and is ideal for massages.

Sesame oil

is normally only known from the kitchen. It smells quite nutty. The longer it is roasted, the more it smells. It is one of the very best massage oils because it can penetrate very deeply into the skin.

Grape seed oil

is a light oil and also suitable for facial care. It contains lots of vitamins and unsaturated fatty acids, which are ideal for mature skin.

What effect do essential oils have?

Depending on which fragrance you choose, you can influence the effect of the massage oil. I have compiled a small list of essential oils and their effects here.

Essential oil Effect
Bergamot Relaxes muscles, relieves cramps
Grapefruit Invigorates and wakes you up
Jasmine Aphrodisiac, pain-relieving
Lavender Relaxing, calming
Melissa Relaxing and calming
Rose Relaxing, harmonizing
Rosemary Good mood
Ylang Ylang Soothing, relaxing
Lemon Promotes concentration, invigorates

What is the shelf life of the oil?

Always store all oils in a dark and cool place. Do not place them in direct sunlight, but store them in a dark cupboard. This way you can store the massage oils for about a year. However, it can happen that the fragrance becomes less intense. That's why I always make small quantities.

Carrier oils can be kept for about a year after opening. I therefore write directly on the bottle when I opened it. That way I know when I have to use it up.

If the oil tumbles, gets a haze or smells strange, stop using it.

Essential oils are highly concentrated - you can use them for many years.

To extend the shelf life of your homemade massage oil, store it in a cool, dark place. Fill it into dark bottles so that even less light can reach it.

Heat, air and light can cause the oil to deteriorate more quickly.

How to properly apply a homemade massage oil?

  1. Lay out a towel or pad to catch the oil and keep your surroundings clean.
  2. Open the bottle of homemade massage oil and pour a small amount into your palms. Start with about a tablespoon, you can always add more if necessary.
  3. Rub your hands together to warm the oil. This makes it more pleasant on the skin and easier to spread.
  4. Start the massage: gently spread the oil over your partner's skin or your own body.
  5. Gentle pressure: Massage in circular movements or gently stroke the skin. Make sure to adjust the pressure to what feels comfortable. 😊🤗

What are the intended uses?

Homemade massage oils can have a whole range of purposes. Of course, the massage is in the first place. But they can do much more.

The abdominal massage is very pleasant and stimulates digestion. You alternate between clockwise and anti-clockwise circular movements around the belly button. Sometimes with little pressure, sometimes with more. And the problem is solved.

The same goes for tension in the neck. They often occur when we spend a lot of time sitting. A stressful day at the office often ends with pain in the neck. Pressing on the pain points can often relieve the tension. It is very pleasant if you use massage oil for this.

Headaches can also be relieved with self-massage. To do this, massage the temples with homemade massage oils and take special essential oils for it. Lavender, eucalyptus and peppermint work really well against headaches.

The homemade oils can also be applied behind the ears, in the neck, on the palms of the hands or the soles of the feet. Or simply on skin that is particularly dry. These are usually the shins or arms.

Lavender massage oil make yourself

Our conclusion

As you can see, making your own massage oil is not difficult. Just make sure not to use too much essential oil and test the finished massage oil on a small area of skin first. If you don't want to use it right away, transfer it to small dark bottles and store it in a cool, dark place.

But we recommend massage oil always fresh and in small quantities to make yourself. It goes quite quickly :)
