What ingredients do I need to make my own bath oil?

A homemade bath oil always consists of:

Base oil - Use natural, cold-pressed vegetable oil. It nourishes the skin, makes it silky soft and provides it with moisture.

Suitable as a basis

Essential oils - You can buy them online or at the pharmacy. Sometimes also in the drugstore. Essential oils are also available in many online stores in practical sets.

Emulsifier - It is necessary so that the bath oil does not float on the surface of the water.

But since we don't want chemicals in our bath oil, we have another tip:

Before each full bath you stir the Bath oil with 0,2 liter Cream. Yes, heard correctly. Cream ensures that the oil mixes with the water and makes the skin pleasantly soft and smooth. You save on chemicals and can feel like Cleopatra in a milk bath.

Food coloring* and Lavender flowers* or Rose petals* - bring color to our oils. Otherwise, all bath oils would look the same. That would also be boring. But do not use too much, otherwise the skin and the bathtub can discolor.

Tip: To make the homemade bath oil last longer, you can add 2-3 Vitamin E drops* to the mixture. You can buy these at the pharmacy.

How to make bath oil?

You don't need much for the basic recipe. If you make bath oil, you can follow these simple instructions. The ratio of ingredients always remains the same. You only need a neutral vegetable oil, such as olive oil, Almond oil* or Jojoba oil* and a natural essential oil.

An emulsifier such as milk or cream is then added directly before the bath - this ensures that the oil mixes with the water.

Basic recipe for bath oil:

  • 100 ml base oil
  • 6-12 drops of essential oils

Or in tablespoons: 100 ml base oil = 10 tablespoons.

Mix the two oils together. You can either use them immediately or store them in a dark bottle. Always shake the oil mixture well before use.

If you like, add a little honey, milk, buttermilk or cream before bathing. And the DIY bath additive is ready.

Important: The specified amount of essential oil should not be exceeded. So if you use two scents for a recipe, you can still take only 5 ml in total. So 2.5 ml of each oil.

For a full bath you take about 20 ml bath oil.

Beware of too much essential oil

1 ml of essential oil is 6-25 drops, depending on the density of the oil. Per full bath you calculate 6-12 drops of essential oil. Better use it very sparingly!

When mixing the bath oil, you need to take your time. Because if you get too many drops of essential oil, you can irritate the skin. If this happens to you, then fill up with base oil to soften the mixture.

Not everyone tolerates every essential oil equally well. Therefore, you should test it on the palm of your hand before adding it to the bath water.

Make your own bath oil only for a bath

Want to make a mixture just for a full bath? Then stick to this recipe:

  • 3 tablespoons base oil
  • 3-5 drops of essential oils

And then a sip of cream, milk or a tablespoon of honey. Done!

Here's what you need to keep in mind if you want to give homemade bath oil as a gift

If you want to make the bath oil in larger quantities as a gift, then mix the emulsifier already with the oils. However, you must not use dairy products for this, as they spoil.

Instead, add 10 to 15 ml of Mulfisan to the oils. This is a synthetically produced emulsifier that extends the shelf life of the oil.

Small disadvantage: the nourishing properties of the milk are lost. But the person receiving the gift, can add the milk itself additionally.

Bottle it in dark bottles, design a nice label and put a bow on the bottle. What a great DIY giftthat comes from the heart!
