Why it's worth making your own avocado spread

Yes, you can also buy avocado cream in the store. But of course that never tastes as good as homemade.

In store bought avocado spread artificial additives and mega much Citric acid* so that it retains its color and keeps for a long time. This makes the dip mega souryou can't taste anything else. I checked for you: a classic Tex Mex dip only contains 1.5 % avocado, but a lot of water, oil and starch to bind the water.

Additionally 4 acidity regulators, avocado flavor, yeast extract, two colorants, two emulsifiers and thickeners. 😯🙅‍♀️

You also pay quite a lot for it. But you don't have to. Because you can easily make your own avocado spread or dip.

For those who have to do it very, very quickly: grab a ripe avocado and spread it directly on bread with salt and pepper. For the feeling of a dip, simply mash the ripe fruit with a fork.

Those who have a little more time can enjoy a delicious avocado cream which goes well on bread, as a dip with nachos or in bowls.

Creamy avocado spread with cream cheese

Before preparing: What you need to know about avocado spread

There are a few things worth knowing that I don't want to withhold from you if you're making a dip like this for the first time.

The spread loses its color

The spread is brown after time. It loses its beautiful, light green color. This is not unhealthy, but simply not very nice to look at.

To prevent this, you can mix a little lemon juice into the avocado spread. Simply stir again before serving and you're done 😊

But be careful: too much lemon makes the juice sour and masks the taste!

Ripen avocado faster

For a really good spread, the avocados must be ripe. Only when they are ripe do they become creamy - unripe fruits are hard and taste slightly bitter. If you have a sensitive stomach, you may even get a stomach ache.

You now have a few options for ripening avocados more quickly. Depending on how much time you have.

Within a day, ripe apples ensure that the avocados become soft. But the microwave can also speed up the ripening process. It's best to take a look at Delia's article here: "This is how you let avocados ripen in a flash!

Incidentally, the fruit ripens more slowly in the fridge. So if you don't want to prepare the avocado spread for a few days, simply refrigerate the butterfruit and, depending on how ripe it is, put it in the kitchen a day before the spread is ready.

You can use it snack with vegetable sticks or spread on bread. The fine light green cream is also the perfect start to a delicious and culinary evening.

Or you can go for nachos. Here you can celebrate the spread with a little more garlic. Then you have your own version of guacamole.

The spread also goes well in a burger, in a crispy lentil wrap or on patties of all kinds.

Make spread from avocado yourself

What ingredients make the avocado spread so delicious

Before I get straight to the recipe, I'd like to say a few words about the ingredients. After all, you should know what you're eating. You can make a delicious avocado spread with these ingredients: avocado, cream cheese, lemon, parsley, salt and pepper.

Avocado in spread

The main ingredient is natural avocado. They not only provide a beautiful light green color, but also the creamy Consistency.

You can add avocado to your menu more often. They contain vitamin E, D and vitamin B6. Plus lots of potassium. The green fruits provide healthy, unsaturated fatty acids.

The riper the avocado, the better it tastes. But it shouldn't be overripe either. Avocado lovers will be familiar with this dilemma.

The best way to do this is with light pressure test. Gives the fruit a little toit should be perfect for the avocado spread. 😋

Although avocados are real calorie bombs, they are considered to be very healthy. The reason for this is the countless healthy unsaturated fatty acids. So don't be surprised if 100 grams of avocado contain 160 calories.

Cream cheese in avocado spread

Well, now that we have the avocado, there is still something missing to round off the spread. I reach for cream cheese. It contains few calories, lots of protein and - if you opt for the low-fat version - little fat.

Since the butterfruit itself already contains a lot of fats, I like to reach for the lean cream cheese. But if you don't have any on hand, you can easily substitute it.

Avocado is very easy to combine. How about sour cream, quark or yogurt (tip: Greek yogurt)? The avocado spread recipe works with all of these alternatives. 🤗 I recently tried it with quark - it takes a bit of getting used to at first, but still tastes really good.

I opted for avocado spread with cream cheese. This not only makes it particularly creamy, but also beautifully light green. As you know, you eat with your eyes 😋

By the way, cream cheese also fits quite wonderful with beet spread.

Parsley in the avocado cream with cream cheese

Even if it may seem unusual at first glance: Avocado goes wonderfully with parsley. And not only in terms of color.

The green spice herb contains huge amounts of vitamin C, of which it is well known that you can hardly get enough.

However, you must be careful not to overdo it, as parsley has an intense flavor of its own. If you like coriander (I don't like it at all), you can substitute it for the parsley.

Cut the leaves very finely so that the flavor is best distributed.

Lemon juice in avocado spread

What's lemon doing in the recipe? Well, a spread with avocado would turn brown if you don't stir in a little lemon. Just like apples, avocados will also turn brown if you don't do anything about it.

Just a few drops of lemon juice can stop this process. If you don't have lemon, you should just eat the spread as soon as possible. If the color changes, the taste will not be the same either.

And of course, the taste of the spread depends a bit on what bread you put it on. I have used it with light bread and with Low carb bread tried. Conclusion: It tastes better with grains. And it's healthier, too. If you like to bake bread, then you should stop by at our recipes. Here you'll find lots of inspiration for homemade rolls and bread.

Avocado spread with cream cheese

My favorite recipe for avocado spread with cream cheese

Do you usually buy spreads in the supermarket? Not this time - today you want to make it yourself. Very good! If you've rarely made spreads before, here are detailed step-by-step instructions.

All those who regularly make spreads will find the A short version of the recipe at the end of the article. 👈

Here comes the longer version for those who have never made an avocado spread before.

This recipe is enough for 2 people.

Ingredients

  • 1 avocado
  • 100 g lean cream cheese
  • 2 stalks parsley
  • 1 lemon
  • 1 pinch salt and pepper

Also: a bowl, a fork, a box with a lid for storage.

1. prepare the avocado

Check again whether the avocado is ripe enough. Squeeze it with your fingers, if it gives way, it's perfect!

Halve the avocado lengthwise. Use a sharp knife and cut it until you can feel the pit. Hold the fruit in your hands and turn it until you can open it. Remove the pit.

Scoop the flesh out of the skin with a tablespoon and place it in a bowl. Mash the avocado with a fork until it is very fine and no more pieces are visible.

Alternatively, you can puree them in a smoothie maker or use a Blender*, so it is guaranteed to be super creamy.

2. the cream cheese

Open the cream cheese. Water often floats to the surface - if so, pour it off.

Add the cream cheese to the bowl. Stir it in. You can use more, of course. But keep in mind that the flavor of the avocado will be masked.

3. stir in the parsley

Wash the parsley thoroughly. Pluck off the leaves - we don't need the stems. You can chop them into the next soup.

Cut the parsley leaves into small pieces with a sharp knife. It is important that the knife is very sharp, otherwise the essential oils will be lost - and with them the flavor.

Sprinkle a little more than half of the parsley into the bowl. Put the rest to one side - we will need it later for decoration.

4. season the avocado spread to taste

Finally, cut the lemon in half. Squeeze it out - we need about 1 tbsp of fresh lemon juice for the recipe.

Stir in the juice.

If you like, you can also grate a little lemon zest and stir it in - it tastes very fruity and delicious!

However, you should only do this if you use an organic lemon. Since I had none at hand, I have dispensed with it.

Season with salt and pepper. Your green spread is ready!

By the way, the avocado spread recipe has the most flavor when it is not too cold. So feel free to take the dip out of the fridge a few minutes before eating.

What is the shelf life of the avocado cream?

You can make the avocado cream cheese and lemon spread two - three days can be stored without any problems. However, it is important that you keep it refrigerated at all times.

Put the avocado cream in a Tupperware container to prevent it from drying out. This will also prevent the spread from turning brown even faster.

However, as the spread with avocado only just survived the shoot, it's a little difficult to judge. 😅

You are always on the safe side if you can eat the avocado spread within two days. For parties or girls' evenings, it's best to prepare the butter fruit spread a day in advance. Tupperware box Do not forget 😊

What can I use to refine the spread?

For aromatic variety and a creamy consistency, you can mix the green fruit with spices, vegetables, herbs and cream cheese.

I have a list of ingredients for you here that you can use:

  • Roasted peanuts or hazelnuts, walnuts
  • Red or yellow diced peppers
  • Chili
  • Chili oil or chili salt
  • Cucumber pieces (note - without the mushy inside)
  • Egg
  • Cocktail tomatoes
  • Garlic
  • Onion
  • Cress or sprouts
  • Sunflower seeds
  • Quark, sour cream
  • Creamy yogurt (e.g. Greek yogurt)
  • Vegan: Soy yogurt
  • Very unusual: Raspberries

And of course some other ingredients too. Just try out what you like and what you like. There are (almost) no limits to your imagination.

And here, as promised, is the short version of the recipe for anyone in a hurry:
