Why make water ice yourself?
Have you ever looked at the ingredient list of store-bought water ice? Sugar, sugar, sugar, colorings and flavorings. Oh yeah, and a little bit of water. Doesn't sound so tempting somehow, does it?
The taste is always the same and there is not much variety either. Most of the time you have to buy the ice cream in the pack of 10 or even 12.
If you don't feel like eating the same thing every day, go for the DIY variety.
Anyone looking for a cool refreshment should reach for homemade water ice. By the way, it is really easy and cheap to make.
So in a nutshell:
- Free from table sugar
- Free from flavorings and preservatives
- Fruity fresh
- Cheap and easy production
- You put in what you really like
What I find super practical: In the water ice you can process very ripe fruit, which you find so no longer so tasty. The riper the fruit, the better the ice cream tastes.

What you need to make your own water ice
- Molds for popsicles - available at Amazon
- Fruit
- A little sweetener such as honey, Agave syrup*, Birch sugar* or Erythritol*
- One powerful hand blender* or smoothie maker
- A freezer
- And of course: water
Basically, anything that tastes good and is colorful is allowed. The basis is homemade teas or fruit juices.
Filling homemade smoothies or pureed fruit is very simple. Depending on your mood, you can add fresh citrus juice, wild berries, honey or other ingredients for refinement.
Did you know that you can make low-calorie ice cream from cottage cheese?
You can easily get the molds for your popsicles at the supermarket or buy them online. Most containers are cone or tongue shaped. Which one you choose is purely a matter of taste.
After filling, cover the ice cream mold with a lid with a handle. Put it in the freezer. The homemade water ice stays there for about 6 hours. But the duration depends on your freezer - mine manages up to -30 °. Therefore, the ice cream is ready very quickly.
Tip: If the ice cream does not release from the mold, just be patient. When it has thawed a bit, it is very easy to pull it out of the mold. If you don't have patience, you can also run hot water over the ice cream mold very briefly.
So easy you can make vegan ice cream yourself!
The basic recipe for water ice
Once you get the hang of water ice, you can make any recipe. The base is always the same. You can refine it with fruits, sweeteners, flowers, syrup and more.

Make water ice yourself - the basic recipe
Ingredients
- 200 g ripe fruits
- 150 ml Water
- Sweetener to taste
Equipment

Anleitung
- Make sure that you use very ripe fruits. Clean them thoroughly, peel and wash them. But be careful not to soak them in water - just rinse them briefly. Otherwise the taste will be lost.
- Puree the fruit with water. If you like, you can now add honey or erythritol. Birch sugar is also suitable. How much sweetener? Just taste :)
- Fill the mixture for the water ice into ice molds.
- Put it in the freezer. Let the ice cream freeze for at least 3 hours. After that you can carefully check if it is ready.
Notes
If you like pieces of fruit, you can put a few small chopped pieces in the ice cream.
Tip: The honey will combine best with the fruit if you heat it in the microwave for 10 seconds.
More color for your water ice
If you want to give your DIY ice cream a visual flourish, you can add currants, blueberries, small pieces of strawberries or other finely diced fruit to the finished mixture.
But flowers also look really nice.
You can use dried rose petals* or daisies. Cornflowers also look really beautiful.
