Nobody can resist an iced dessert in summer. Why you should definitely try a watermelon sorbet and how easy it is to prepare, you can find out here.

In summer we don't need much to be happy. Airy clothes, a big swimming ring, a good book and a place in the penumbra.

And of course a proper refreshment for the heated body.

Of course, a dip in the cool water helps. If space and budget are not enough for a vacation or a pool, then the garden shower or the hose will have to do. Or the sea and the quarry pond?

No matter where the refreshment comes from: Afterwards we feel refreshed and vital. And our body can cool down a bit.

However, with the high temperatures, the craving for cold foods increases at the same time.

Eating ice cream is, of course, at the top of the summer priority list. Of course. Because ice cream is delicious, cooling and ... high in calories.

If you are looking for cooling and a dessert, you should prepare watermelon sorbet. It is low in calories and deliciously refreshing.

That's why you should make watermelon sorbet yourself

I have absolutely nothing against ice cream. On the contrary. I love it!

But homemade sorbet absolutely outshines the calorie bomb on a stick, in a cup, in a bag. Because it not only tastes incredibly good. Sorbet is fruity, fresh and delicious. And it has hardly any calories.

And best of all: With only two and a half ingredients you can easily conjure up the summer refreshment yourself.

Without dyes, preservatives or other nonsense.

Watermelon has just 30 calories per 100 grams. In contrast, the popular popsicle with crunchy chocolate coating comes to a whopping 325 calories per 100 grams!

By the way, there are a number of other low calorie fruits, from which you can make sorbets and healthy desserts.

Due to its light and airy consistency, the sorbet will even challenge any homemade water ice in the shade.

So healthy is sorbet from watermelon

You should eat watermelon as often as possible in the summer anyway. Because the fruit consists of 90 % of water. Thus, it helps to keep the body hydrated and reduces the risk of dehydration.

In addition, the summer fruit contains many important vitamins and nutrients. For example, the fibers of the pulp contain many A and C vitamins. Vitamin A supports the health of our eyes, skin, bones and teeth.

Vitamin C protects our cells from free radicals. It supports our vessels, prevents cardiovascular diseases.

In addition, vitamin C ensures a better ability to concentrate and lifts the mood.

The iron content in melons is also high. In addition, it contains B, D, E and K vitamins, minerals, proteins and important fats. At the same time watermelon has just 24 calories per 100 grams.

Watermelon sorbet without sugar

Once a food is very cold, our tongues don't perceive it as being that sweet. Have you ever eaten a melted ice cream and wondered how extremely sweet it is? Then exactly this effect has occurred.

That is why many DIY sorbets are sweetened. Often this happens with sugar. But since I'm trying to take very little sugar to me, I do without sugar and substitutes in the watermelon sorbet.

Therefore, I take a very ripe melon, which does not make me lose the sugar.

If you have a sweet tooth, you can sweeten with these alternatives:

Recipe for watermelon sorbet without ice cream maker

Because I have little storage options due to lack of space, the ice cream maker remains a long-cherished dream. But fortunately, watermelon sorbet works at least as well without an ice cream maker.

All you need is a freezer, a bowl, melon and a Blender*.

I'm showing you the longer version of the recipe here. If you're looking for a shorter version or are interested in the nutritional values, you'll find that at the end of the post.

This recipe makes enough for 3 servings.

Ingredients

  • 500 g watermelon
  • 1 tablespoon lime juice

Also: knife, hand blender, strainer, vegetable grater

Preparation

  • Weigh 500 g of melon. Remove the pulp from the skin and cut the melon into large pieces. Remove the seeds. Put the melon pieces into a large bowl.
  • Wash the lime and squeeze half of it - you should now get about 1 tablespoon of juice.
  • Grate the zest from the lime.
  • Put the melon in a bowl and puree it. If you like, you can now pass it through a sieve to remove all the pieces.
  • Mix the melon juice with the lime juice and lime zest.
  • Pour the juice into a low casserole dish or plastic box.
  • Put them in the freezer and stir for the first time after 30 minutes. Now the watermelon sorbet begins to solidify at the corners. Repeat the stirring 3 times every 20 minutes from now on.

Tip: If you don't want to stir it all the time, let it freeze through and put it in the blender. However, you should put the food processor in the refrigerator for at least 10 minutes beforehand so that the sorbet does not melt during the pureeing process.

If you like, you can fold in a bit of basil or fresh mint.
