Why should I make solid shampoo myself?
Simply avoid silicones, microplastics and synthetic additives that are supposed to soften the hair.
Indeed, products with silicones often ensure that our hair can not absorb nourishing substances. They are enclosed with silicone.
Silicones that do not get stuck in our hair end up in the waste water, where they are a burden on the environment. All this does not have to be.
I love solid shampoo and get by for about 4 months with one. When traveling it just works out wonderfully because it takes up less space and does not leak in the suitcase.
What's also eliminated is all the plastic waste that comes with every bottle of hair shampoo.
The advantages at a glance
- Solid shampoo bars are as productive as liquid shampoo
- You save a lot of packaging waste with it
- Shampoo bars are very productive, I gets along with a bar for about half a year
- Solid shampoo you can do yourself
- The hair soaps make a good gift - no matter whether birthday, Christmas or just so in between
- Once you have bought the ingredients, you can prepare any number of bars from them
What is the difference between shampoo bar and hair soap?
Do you want to make a solid hair shampoo or hair soap? Hair soap actually contains soap. Shampoo bars work with surfactants.
It is not easy to make (hair) soap completely by yourself. But if you Curd soap* as a starting point, you can adapt it to your needs.
Hair soaps have several advantages over shampoos: they contain no synthetic surfactants and cleanse your hair with soapy oils and fats, not just lyes. When buying, make sure that they do not contain palm oil.
When you wash your hair with a bar of soap, the hardness of the water will affect the results. Since the soap can combine with the lime in the water and form deposits in the hair, the result is often sticky-looking hair.
If the water is soft - i.e. low in lime, this phenomenon does not occur. If you have very hard tap water, you should wash your hair regularly with acid rinse. Or make your own solid hair shampoo - this problem does not occur.
What ingredients do I need for a DIY shampoo bar?
Here comes some info worth knowing for you if you want to make solid shampoo yourself for the first time. Take your time and read them at your leisure.
SLSA surfactant in solid hair shampoo
The abbreviation SLSA* stands for sodium lauryl sulfoacetate. This is a very mild and skin-friendly surfactant. It does not dry out the skin and leaves hair and skin feeling very soft. The very fine white powder is made from lauric acid from Coconut oil* and organic salts of acetic acid.
Unfortunately, it is nowhere to get in the store, I was in various stores. That's why you have to buy it online. SLSA Surfactant* is available from Amazon.
It is very important that you do not inhale the powder. It can irritate the respiratory tract. So be very careful when processing. Wear gloves and carefully portion the powder with a spoon instead of pouring it.
If you do not have SLSA Surfactant*, then you can use SCI Tensid as an alternative. Simply replace it 1:1.
Have you ever heard of rye flour shampoo?
Make your own corn starch for solid shampoo
Cornstarch* keeps the shampoo bars in shape. It combines with the SLSA* and the vegetable oil and ensures the firm consistency. It has no hair care properties.
Optionally, you can try it with potato starch. However, I don't know if that really works. I haven't tried it yet. Cornstarch* has better adhesive properties and holds the bars firmly together. Potato starch could make the hair soaps crumble more.
Cocoa butter in hair soap
We need liquid so that bars of soap do not crumble. I have Cocoa butter* because I still had it at home. But you can also use a whole range of other oils.
Cocoa butter* has the advantage that it makes the bars firmer at room temperature than liquid vegetable oil. No matter which one you ultimately choose, you will always benefit from the nourishing properties.
- Cocoa butter* is good for dry and damaged hair
- Shea butter* makes the hair soft and supple
- Coconut oil* stops dandruff, hair loss and helps with dry hair
- Almond oil* Effective for dull hair and hair prone to splitting
- Evening primrose oil has an intensively regenerating effect for the hair

Essential oils
They bring fragrance to our solid shampoo. But it's very important that you use it sparingly. Too much of a good thing can cause skin irritation!
You can combine scents according to your mood. But please do not exceed the maximum amount. In the recipe presented above, it should be a maximum of 10 drops.
- Essential Lavender oil* accelerates hair growth and improves the health of the scalp
- Peppermint stimulates blood circulation in the scalp and strengthens the hair roots
- Rosemary oil* makes the hair stronger
- Lemongrass oil helps get rid of dandruff
- Tea tree oil* is used against quickly greasy hair
- Chamomile soothes irritated and itchy scalp
- Ylang Ylang is perfect if you have dry scalp
Food coloring to make solid shampoo itself
It may be a little color, right? So the hair soaps look much nicer. They make a particularly good gift if you use the favorite color of the recipient.
But beware: Many food dyes are very intense. So it's better to use less and dye a little more than too much.
For DIY projects, I prefer to use food powder. It mixes more evenly and beautifully. You can make your hair soap single or multi-colored. Just do what you just feel like :)

How to make colorful hair soap
Do you want your shampoo bars to have multiple colors at once?
Then divide the base mass into several small bowls. Color them individually and then pour them layer by layer into the soap molds.
It's especially nice if you use very little color, giving you pastel tones.
If you like, you can sprinkle a few dried flowers on top.
Finally the perfect platinum blonde! How to dye your hair yourself!
How do I apply a shampoo bar?
The solid shampoo is not lathered in the palm of your hand, it is applied directly to wet hair. Make circular motions with the piece in your hands and then massage the foam into your mane as usual.
And what can I say? The solid shampoo stick does what it should: The hair is clean, the scalp is not irritated and the mane can be combed well.
Important: Always store the bar so that moisture can run off. It must be allowed to dry, otherwise it softens and melts.
You can make the bars in different sizes. If you're going on a short trip, you definitely won't need as much of them as you would at home. That's why I make shampoo bars in several shapes.
If you are packing your suitcase for vacation, you should put the solid shampoo in a storage box. You can buy one or use a small Tupperware box for it.
If you don't feel like packing a shower gel, by the way, you can lather your whole body with the bars. It works quite wonderfully.
Our conclusion
Make your own solid shampoo is very simple. You can make the bars in different scents and colors to suit the needs of your hair. Feel free to experiment a little with the oils and observe what does your hair good.
Have fun making it! :)
