How to make bath balls yourself

If you have not yet dared to do DIY projects, then this is the right place. I show you here a very precise step-by-step instructions and tell you important things about each step. If you are already quite experienced and regularly makes cosmetics, bath products and Co, you will find a short version at the end of the article.

The amount is enough for 15 bath balls.

Ingredients:

Also: bath ball molds, bowl, spoon, scale, strainer.

Mix the dry ingredients

The first step is to prepare the solid mass for the balls. To do this, you need to mix the dry ingredients together well.

Place a bowl on the scale. Have a sieve ready and first pour Baking soda* into the sieve. Once you have sieved the right amount into the bowl Citric acid* and Cornstarch* on it.

Why do I have to sift the mass? Are you asking yourself the same question? That is quickly explained: If you pass the dry ingredients through the sieve, you prevent lumps from forming.

Mix the liquid ingredients

Bring the Coconut oil* to melt. This works just as well in the microwave as in a small saucepan on the stove. I prefer to use Coconut oil*because it is solid in its natural form and hardens very quickly in the refrigerator. This means the bath bombs are ready for use more quickly.

If you want to use a different oil, in the next paragraph you will find a list of vegetable oils that are suitable for this purpose.

Mix the ingredients together

Now mix the dry ingredients with the oil. It is best to do this by the spoonful, so that the mass gets an even amount of oil. If you mix the ingredients too quickly, they will catch on the Baking soda* and Citric acid* starts to react with the oil - it bubbles. It should only do this later, so it is better to proceed slowly.

The consistency of the bath balls should now be about like wet sand. You can shape them with your fingers and a spoon. It may be that the mass is too dry, then add a little oil. If it is too liquid, use a little bit more of Cornstarch*.

Are you satisfied? Then add the essential oil. Mix well again.

And if you want multiple colors, divide the mixture among several bowls. In each bowl add a few drops of Soap color*. Attention: It colors very intensely, as you can see in my pictures. I got a little too much. 😅

Shape bath balls

Now you press the mass for the bath chocolates in special molds. There are round, square and many other bath ball shapes. Choose what you like. Press the "dough" for the bath balls very firmly into the molds. The best way to do this is with your fingers. Fill one side first, then the second.

Important: you need to fill both molds slightly over the edge so that the two halves join to form a ball. Press the two half balls together very firmly. A slight twisting motion will make the mixture join even better.

Put them in the refrigerator for half an hour. Then take them out of the mold and let them stand at room temperature for at least 2 hours. Now they harden and become more stable. If you want to be on the safe side, let them rest for 12 hours.

Help, my DIY bath bombs fall apart

Does the mass fall apart and just won't let itself be formed? Then you have too much Cornstarch* and too little oil. Add a little more melted Coconut oil* to it. Simply heat it up in the microwave. Start with a teaspoon and slowly increase the amount of oil.

Is the mass too moist? Then you have used too much oil. In this case you should add a little more Cornstarch* into the mixture. It absorbs the excess oil and ensures that the bath bombs can be formed.

You must always give the bath bombs enough time to harden. This works well in the refrigerator in summer and on the balcony in autumn/winter. After refrigeration, let the balls dry overnight at room temperature. You can try carefully loosening one side of the mold to speed up the drying process.

What is the shelf life of homemade bath bombs?

If you make bath balls yourself, the shelf life depends on the ingredients and storage. In order for the bath bombs to have a long shelf life, it is important that you let them harden properly. Pack them airtight and store them in the dark to increase the shelf life.

If you follow these tips, DIY Bathbombs can be easily stored for several months. In fact, it's not uncommon for them to keep for up to two years. However, for the maximum bubble and scent effect, you should use up the bath bombs within 8 weeks of making them.

If you store them too long, the color and fragrance may change. If you want to store the bubbles in a damp bathroom, be sure to put them in a jar with a screw cap!

How do I use Bathbombs correctly?

Put the bath bomb into the tub after you have let the water in. It begins to bubble with water contact and now dissolves. It may take some time for it to dissolve completely. In the meantime, you can sit in the bathtub or wait until the process is complete.

Now a light film of oil floats on the surface. This is actually intentional and ensures that your skin becomes particularly supple.

When in your bubble bomb Glitter* or color, then you should rinse the skin again after bathing. However, this is generally not necessary with high-quality homemade bath bombs - it's even a shame for the nourishing properties of the oil.

To remove oil or paint residue from the tub, use a rag or sponge.

If you want to relax even more, you can read a book in the tub, light a candle or use a cozy bath pillow.

Why bubble bath bombs?

The effervescent properties of the bath balls are created by the combination of food soda and Citric acid*. This chemical reaction takes place when sodium bicarbonate and citric acid come into contact with water. As soon as the bath balls enter the water, the acid-base reaction takes place. Carbon dioxide gas (CO2) is released in the process.

The gas forms bubbles that rise to the surface of the water and cause the typical effervescence.

It is important that you maintain the 2:1 ratio when making it, so use twice as much baking soda as citric acid.

If you have only used baking soda for baking so far, you should also use it for skin care from now on. Because sodium bicarbonate cleanses the skin because it is alkaline and has an antibacterial effect. In combination with citric acid, it is the ingredient in bath bombs that provides hold.

To combine citric acid and baking soda, we need oil. But oil also has another task when we make bath bombs ourselves. You can use pretty much any vegetable oil that is suitable for body care. It moisturizes our skin and makes it supple.

I prefer to use coconut oil. But you can also mix oils, like 100 grams of coconut oil and 20 grams of Almond oil*.
