Baking soda* is a great helper in the household. It can be used as an oven cleaner, for white laundry, as a shoe odor remover or for baking. But the white powder can do much more.

What is sodium bicarbonate?

Baking soda* (sodium hydrogen carbonate) is often used as a leavening agent. But the inexpensive powder is also a great household remedy if you suffer from heartburn. Baking soda* can neutralize stomach acid and alleviate many other ailments. It is considered the oldest household remedy for heartburn and hyperacidity.

There is even evidence that it was used as a medicine in ancient Rome. Here it was mainly used for a burning sensation in the stomach, i.e., what we understand today as heartburn.

1/2 tsp of baking soda powder dissolved in 200 ml of water can temporarily neutralize stomach acid and stop heartburn. But not only the stomach is soothed by it, the spleen also benefits.

Why does baking soda help deacidify the body?

If you want to deacidify your body with sodium bicarbonate, then you must know that the effect results from its alkaline character. The reason for this is that sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3-) in water to Bicarbonate (HCO3-) and Sodium ions (Na+) decays.

Both bicarbonate and sodium ions are found in our body. We absorb them with food, and some are produced by the body itself.

Of particular interest in this context is bicarbonate, as it has an acid-neutralizing effect. It is even said to be the most important acid-neutralizing substance in our body.

Whether you actually need to add sodium bicarbonate is a matter of debate among scientists. Especially for heartburn, the powder is recommended by many doctors. Here it has a proven effect. In animal experiments it could be shown that less stomach acid was formed when feeding acidic foods and additionally sodium bicarbonate.

However, doctors also recommend that you should not experiment yourself. Because too much soda can cause side effects such as abdominal pain, severe flatulence, belching, high blood pressure and overhydration.

If you still want to try it, then proceed as follows:

  • Dissolve morning, noon and evening
  • 1/2 tsp. baking soda in 200 ml water to
  • drink it on an empty stomach
  • wait at least half an hour until the next meal.

The duration of the sodium bicarbonate cure is described differently everywhere. From 30 days to 5 days cure, 5 days break and that over a period of 30 days everything is there.

Important: Sodium bicarbonate can affect the absorption of other substances. If you take medication or the pill, then there must be a break of at least 2 hours in between.

It is important that you use pure baking soda for this and no Baking powder*!

Better than sodium bicarbonate: acid-base powder

It is true that sodium bicarbonate helps to deacidify the body, as studies have shown. However, you must be careful not to take too much. Ready-mixed alkaline powder products are more suitable. In addition to sodium bicarbonate, they also contain zinc, magnesium, potassium and calcium.

This gives your acid-base drink a much wider spectrum of effects and you can be sure not to overdose.

However, I don't have a particularly good opinion on the subject of powders. Most dissolve with difficulty in water and are therefore not very pleasant to drink. It scratches the throat, the powder sticks to the bottom of the glass and overall it's not very practical.

Much easier to use are capsules or tablets.

Quite new on the market are alkaline drops, while researching I just discovered them. You simply add these to tap water and drink it. They are completely tasteless.

If you don't have a favorite yet, then I can give you this Alka base drops recommend. They are mix quite wonderfully with normal tap water or sparkling water.

The drops change the pH of the water, which causes the body to begin deacidification. Drink 4 glasses of tap water and add 4 alkaline drops to each glass. If you want to know more about it, it's best to go directly to the website.

How do I keep the acid-base balance in balance?

Whether you decide to deacidify your body with sodium bicarbonate or alkaline products is up to you. The important thing is that this is a measure that you do not carry out permanently, but only over a short period of time. Find the cause of the imbalance in your acid-base balance and focus on a healthy diet.

That's how you stay in balance:

  • Eat lots of fresh vegetables and salad
  • Reach for fruit regularly
  • Drink much
  • Move enough and daily
  • Avoid too much stress
  • Take sugar, coffee, alcohol and similar stimulants only in small quantities

In addition, you can draw a warm bath and relax a little. You can mix the right bath additive for the alkaline bath yourself from two ingredients. Our conclusion

If you've heard that you can use baking soda to deacidify the body, you're right. Nevertheless, many experts advise against it, because the side effects can be too strong. An overdose is quickly taken and you have to fight with many complaints afterwards. Much easier to dose are base drops or capsules.
