What you need to sew scrunchies everything

In order for you to sew trendy scrunchies, you only need a few things. First of all, you need an elongated fabric blank.

Either buy a fabric of your choice, a fabric remnant from your last DIY sewing project, or use an old garment for it.

We did some upcycling with an old dress - so we didn't have to buy anything extra, we just took what we already had at home anyway.

From the type of fabric and pattern you have free choice. Allowed is what pleases. We have chosen viscose, but velvet or silk also looks very great!

For the pattern, we went for bright boho style tones, which is especially great for summer and goes with any hair color.

Then you need a sewing machine. Depending on the fabric you use, you will need special needles.

Thick fabrics probably won't sew at all with a regular sewing machine, you'll need an overlock sewing machine for that.

But if you use rayon like we do, you'll be fine with a regular sewing machine.

Then you still need a rubber band or you take a conventional hair tie. We have chosen a rubber band, which you can get in any decoration or household store.

You'll also need fabric scissors, safety pins, push pins and a tape measure to sew scrunchies.

So again in a nutshell:

  • 1 fabric blank (40 cm x 7 cm)
  • Rubber band (8 cm)
  • A sewing machine
  • One pair of fabric scissors
  • Safety pins, pins
  • A tape measure
  • An iron

Once you have everything ready, you're ready to start sewing scrunchies!

Step by step instructions for sewing scrunchies

First, prepare the fabric you want to use for your scrunchie. Cut a 40 cm x 7 cm piece of fabric.

Then bend 1 cm of the fabric at one short end and iron the edge in place, pinning it in place with pins.

Now fold the fabric in half, right sides together, and iron over it again.

Then pin the fabrics together at the edge with pins.

Now sew the fabric together on the long side with a seam allowance of about 1 cm. You can then cut off the seam allowance.

Now attach a safety pin to the end of the fabric tunnel and turn the fabric by passing the safety pin through the tunnel. This can be a bit more time consuming. Now hold the fabric tunnel right side out in your hands.

Make sure the seam is centered and iron over the fabric tunnel like this.

Now cut an 8 cm long rubber band. Attach a safety pin to one end of the elastic and thread the elastic through your fabric tunnel.

Hold the other end tightly so that it doesn't accidentally slip down your tunnel.

Now pull both rubber ends together so that they overlap. Sew the ends together.

Now tuck about 1 cm of the unfinished end of the fabric tunnel into the ironed end. The center seam should be the same in each case.

Now hand sew the edges together with a few stitches.

Your super cool Scrunchie is ready! That was fast, wasn't it?

However, you are welcome to try yourself with the size of the fabric. If you want to have larger scrunchies, then you can also take more fabric.

However, we opted for less fabric in a rayon scrunchie so that the scrunchie would have a nicer shape.

Sew scrunchies

Before you start sewing, we'll show you how to best showcase your scrunchies that you can now sew yourself.

The best styles: How to put your self-sewn scrunchies in the spotlight

Whether you have curly or straight hair, blonde or brown or red hair, a long or short cut, scrunchies just always look great!

Now we'll show you how to best showcase your scrunchies that you can sew yourself.

Half-Bun

This hairstyle screams the 90s! The half braid is super comfortable especially in summer, because the hair is out of your face, yet you can show off your flowing mane.

So whether you wear the half-bun high up or looser and lower is up to you. One thing is certain: both look mega trendy!

Dutt

The chignon is our favorite bad hair day hairstyle, yours too? When no hairstyle works, the chignon always fixes it. Even if the hair is not quite fresh, a chignon is also always a great solution.

With a scrunchie, the chignon looks particularly casual. No matter whether you wear the chignon low on the neck, in the middle or rather very high - the scrunchie enhances this hairstyle extremely.

And depending on what fabric and pattern you wear, the scrunchie on your chignon can look elegant, sporty or playful!

High ponytail

This hairstyle is extremely cute and super practical if you want to have a great, but uncomplicated hairstyle.

Very playful look high ponytails with scrunchies, if you put your hair in light waves. But also low ponytails in combination with scrunchies, which you can now sew yourself, look elegant.

Braided hairstyle

Especially with long hair, braided hairstyles with scrunchies are really great! A deep ponytail at the nape of the neck and the end tied together with a scrunchie - mega retro and so cute!

If you have shorter hair, then two loose boxer braids with scrunchies look really great as well.

Bracelet

Scrunchies look great not only as a hair accessory, they are also great as bracelets! Color-coordinated with the outfit, the scrunchies are beautiful hand jewelry and a real eye-catcher.

And the best part? If you ever need a scrunchie, you literally have it at your fingertips.

Tips for sewing scrunchies

  1. Use fabric scraps! You don't have to buy expensive fabric scraps to make a scrunchie. Instead, use fabric scraps from other sewing projects. Or you can use discarded clothing. Dresses, blouses or skirts made of viscose, for example, are perfect!
  2. Make several at once! If you're already at the sewing machine, it's better to make more than one scrunchie. Your friends will snatch it out of your hand! Plus, it looks great when you wear a scrunchie in your hair and a matching one on your arm.
  3. Try different sizes and fabrics! Depending on the type of fabric you need a larger or smaller cut. With thin fabrics it is better if you take less, with stronger fabrics you can also take more without hesitation.

Our conclusion

We love scrunchies! The trendy hair ties from the 90s are finally back and can be styled wonderfully and easily.

Now you know how to sew scrunchies yourself. In just 10 minutes, the retro hair accessory is ready to wear. With it, your hairstyle will be unique!
