Especially on hot days they save our hairstyle: because hairbands give us a cool style and besides they keep our hair out of our face.

If you want to make a hairband yourself, then you are in the right place. We show you a tutorial on how to sew your own turban hairband!

What you need to sew hair band everything

So that you can sew a cool turban hairband yourself, you only need a few things. You need two rectangles of jersey fabric.

You can get blanks at a sewing store or, like us, just take a basic oversized jersey dress or t-shirt. You can take a plain one or a printed one, it looks great both ways!

Then you need a sewing machine. It is important that you have an extra jersey needle or an overlock sewing machine. Otherwise you can not sew the fabric!

You will also need scissors or a rotary cutter to cut the fabric. To fix the seam later, you will also need an iron.

Step by step tutorial on how to sew hair band yourself

We will now show you a quick and easy tutorial on how to sew a hair band.

Preparation

You start by cutting the jersey fabric. You need two pieces that have the same dimensions.

We have taken 24 cm in width and 60 cm in length. The length is based on your head circumference plus 3 cm. What is too much, you can still cut off later.

You need to cut the fabric so that you can stretch the fabric lengthwise.

Sewing the hair band

Then it's time to sew the individual jersey strips together.

Place them lengthwise on top of each other so that the left side, or the one that will later be inside, is on top. Then pin everything in place with pins.

How much seam allowance you want to use is up to you, we recommend 1 cm. It is important that if you are sewing with a regular sewing machine, use an elastic stitch, i.e. a zig-zag stitch.

Also, it's important that you use a special jersey needle on a regular sewing machine. Or you have an overlock machine, which can sew jersey super either way.

When sewing, you should not pull on the fabric, but let it go through very loosely.

When you have sewn both fabrics together respectively, turn them inside out.

Then fold the fabrics so that the seam is in the middle.

Now it's time for the finishing touches: place one piece of fabric seam side up and the other piece seam side down across the first piece of fabric so that it looks like a cross.

Then you take the two ends of the ribbon below together.

Finally, lay all four open ends on top of each other to make a pretty knot.

Now try on the hair band for safety. If you took too much fabric in length before, cut off the excess fabric now.

Then sew the ends together with a zig-zag stitch or overlock machine.

And your self-sewn hair band is ready! That was fast now, wasn't it? 😊

Now before you start sewing, we'll show you which hairband color flatters your hair the most.

Which hairband color suits your hair?

No matter what haircut you have, a hair band always looks really great. Hair bands give a feminine yet casual look.

To make your new hair band especially flattering, we now show you which colors go best with your hair.

Brown hair

If you have brown hair, then you have an incredible number of options. Because one thing is for sure: bright colors suit you! Red and yellow look particularly fresh in brown hair, but blue, green, purple and pink are also ideal as hairband colors.

Berry or earth tones also suit you. They are intense, but not so gaudy! If you like it more simple, then you can also reach for beige tones. Of course, black always goes!

Blonde hair

With blonde hair, you have just as much choice. But if you don't want to look like Barbie's sister, you'd better stay away from pastel shades or use the "candy colors" sparingly.

Something gaudy is needed! Red, for example, suits you very well. But also khaki, light blue or gray flatter you. White or beige give you an elegant look.

Red hair

If you have red hair, then sometimes it can be quite tricky. But you know that for sure! Shades like yellow with the exception of mustard yellow, red or orange you should avoid, they resemble your hair too much.

Green tones are made for it like for you! But also pale blue or gold are something special for red-haired women. The brave can try it with pastel pink, if they sew themselves a hair band. The contrast makes you an eye-catcher!

Black hair

Again, contrast is a must! Bright colors like yellow, pink, orange or red go perfectly with your black hair. Pastel tones tend to go down in your hair.

With white you should be careful, not all women with black hair fit bright colors. But an intense purple is also ideal!

You have free rein with the patterns. Whatever you like is allowed. Dotted, flowered, striped or rather plain?

The important thing is that you feel comfortable and wear your self-made hair band with pride. Because you can be really proud of your work!

3 tips for sewing hair band yourself

  1. Before you start sewing, make sure you have a jersey needle. With a normal needle, you can not sew the fabric, it will only run stitches.
  2. If you are not sure about the width of the hair band, better take a little less. If you want to have a narrower band, then 20 cm in width is enough.
  3. You don't need to buy expensive jersey fabric from the fabric store! A basic oversized t-shirt or a t-shirt dress from the clothing store is perfect.

Our conclusion

Now you know how to sew a hair band yourself! With our instructions, it's truly a piece of cake. One thing we can promise you: with your self-sewn hairband you will feel like a queen with her crown!

So let's go to the sewing machine! Have fun sewing turban hair band!
