Why sewing mouthguard makes sense

With homemade masks, you help to ensure that the masks that are still available remain for all those who urgently need them: Doctors, hospitals, care facilities and anyone who has close human contact.

On top of that, you save the environment with self-sewn mouth masks. You don't have to throw them away, but can wash them in the washing machine.

And let's face it, they are super stylish, aren't they? You can use your favorite fabric.

If you care a lot about style, even sew masks in different colors to always have the right accessory for your outfit :)

Once we get through the Corona period, you can wear the mask later at the carnival parade or use it as a dust cover while cleaning.

That's why we've created a separate post on sewing mouthguards with patterns, which we're happy to share with you.

What fabrics are suitable for sewing mouthguard

Anyone who has ever sewn something themselves knows how much choice there is in fabrics. The materials and quality can be very different.

For a mouth and nose mask is suitable

If you use a thin fabric, you can sew it in two or even three layers.

By the way, fabric scraps are also great for creating a DIY face mask. If you don't have any fabric at hand, but want to get started right away, you can sacrifice an old T-shirt.

Important: Wash the mask regularly. Do you wear it every day? Then it is best to wash it every day. Pay attention to the temperature of the washing process. It should be at least 60° Celsius.

What are the masks for mouth

Very roughly, the nose-mouth masks can be divided into two categories. There are those that are cut straight. And those that are cut further up the nose and chin.

For total sewing beginners, the straight masks are better. These are the ones that dentists wear, for example, or that you can buy as disposable mouthguards at DM and Co.

They have small pleats sewn into them to make them easier to put on and to fit your nose and mouth.

If you have a little more experience at the sewing machine, you can sew a nose and mouth guard, which is a little curved. It includes the nose and chin and extends to the ears.

And for those who are particularly skilled, you can even sew in a wire or chenille wire (pipe cleaners wire). This allows the mask to fit the nose even better.

But of course there are still several variants and cuts. The important thing is that the mask fits well and that you feel comfortable with it.

Rubber bands or fabric ribbons

You can attach the mask to your face either with an elastic band or with fabric straps.

The advantage of elastic bands is that the mask can be put on very quickly. However, if you wear it for a longer period of time, the rubber bands may start to rub and get in the way.

If you decide to use long fabric ribbons for sewing mouthguards, you can choose them in beautiful and matching colors. However, you need to attach them to the back of the head with a stitch every time.

What is a good choice depends entirely on you. For beginners sewing masks with elastic bands are often easier to make.

Sew mouth guard with pattern instructions variant 1

Download the free printable pattern for the mouthguard here.

Pre-cut it as indicated in the pattern. Note: It is a large 34 cm long fabric, which you then fold in half.

For this mask we use a normal cotton fabric, which we take double. Especially convenient now fabric offers with sets of different colors. You can look at Amazon, for example, where you can get 8 patterns and colors in a set.

Tip: Bias tapes (also called binding tapes) and binding tapes can either be purchased ready-made. Or you can cut them from a fabric and iron them into the shape you need.

As wire you can Chenille wire use. It bends well and is guaranteed not to pinch, even if you wear the mask longer.

What you need to get started

  • 1x mouthguard as indicated in the pattern
  • 2x Bias tape 20×4,5 cm
  • 2x Tie strap 90×4,5 cm
  • 20 cm Craft wire
  • an iron
  • a ruler
  • Magic chalk or a fabric paint pen

This is how the mouth guard looks like in the end according to these instructions.

The guide

For those who find videos easier, we have found a very simple tutorial on YouTube. The video of "Simply sew" explains step by step how you have to proceed.

And what you need to pay special attention to.

Mark the folds on the fabric. You will find them in the pattern. Use a ruler and a magic chalk or fabric paint pen.

Place the folds as you have marked them, fix them with pins and iron the broken edges. There should now be three folds. We will need these later so that the mouthguard can be enlarged around the nose and chin.

You can iron the pleats, but you don't have to. However, for sewing it is a little easier when the fabric has folds.

3. sew the mask right and left, so that the folds are fixed.

4. now we will take care of the bias tapes. Take both tapes at hand.

Slide the bias tape onto the long edges of the mouth guard. If you like, you can now push a wire into the edging tape.

Attach wire and binding tape with pins. Sew it in place with the sewing machine.

7. now in front of you is a self-sewn mouth mask, which is missing only the long ribbons.

Mark half of the ribbons with a pencil. Place the mask on the first band and fold the band over. Fix it with pins.

Fold in the ends of the ribbon. Sew the ribbons to the mask.

Sew mouthguard variant 2

A little more complicated is this makeshift mask and mouthguard. But it is more ergonomic and can be equipped with a filter bag.

Nose Mouth Mask Instruction
This mask has provided us acquamel. She made it from a free pattern from Schnittbogen.

As you can see, this mask is a bit curved. It is composed of two parts, which are sewn together in the place of the mouth and nose.

Unlike the other mask, this makes it cut a little further up the nose and chin.

Overall, this mask therefore also sits a little tighter and does not deform.

If you have sewn a few times, then you will definitely succeed in this variant.

Mouthguard sew yourself variant 3

A mixture of version 1 and 2 is this mouth guard. It is also very suitable for beginners. Instead of a fixed band to tie it comes with rubber bands.

Probably even better than the first version. Namely, you can save the sewing of the fastening tapes. So you are even faster and can produce in large quantities :)

Sewing the mask in the end is almost the same as the first video.

However, here you simply thread a rubber cord at the end. Knot it and slide the knot under the mask.

That's it :)

Mouth mask without stitching

For rather untalented seamstresses like me, there is a wonderful alternative. I discovered this on Nicole Bergmann on Instagram.

All you need are two rubber bands and a cloth. The cloth she uses in the video is 55×55 cm. By cleverly folding it, you can easily turn it into a mouthguard.

Without sewing, cutting, gluing or other potential risks of injury :)

Wonderful, isn't it? It almost doesn't get any better than this. You can use any cloth for this and then simply return it to its original shape.

Why you should wear a mask

Yes, it looks unusual. And that's how it feels. Except for doctors, nurses, caregivers and a few other professionals, we are simply not used to it.

But if you bet on sewing mouthguards and choose a stylish option, it will definitely be much easier.

When sneezing, viruses, bacteria and germs are thrown up to five meters. Some experts even speak of nine meters.

If the affected person wears a face mask, most of the pathogens remain trapped in the fabric.

A fabric face mask cannot protect you personally from viruses. But and this is very important now: You protect others with it.

Did you know that about half of all Corona infected people have no symptoms at all? They are really dangerous for anyone with a weak immune system or pre-existing conditions.

Without knowing it, they transmit the virus.

But if everyone wears a mouthguard, the likelihood of passing on the virus decreases enormously. Especially by those who feel fit and healthy, although they unknowingly spread Corona viruses.

Sewing and wearing face masks protects us all. The more face masks in circulation, the better it is.

But even if you wear your face mask, don't feel safe! Disinfect your hands regularly, do not reach into your face and keep at least 1 meter distance. Even more distance is better. Personally, I always try to stay at least 2 meters away from others.

Our conclusion

Sew mouth guard is not difficult. Even if you are already a little rusty at the sewing machine, it turns out wonderfully. Take your time for the first face mask and work slowly and accurately. Then nothing can go wrong :)

Good luck and stay healthy! 😀
