There are really talented seamstresses out there. And then there's me. I wouldn't call myself completely talentless, but somehow I lack the skill. And what makes it even more difficult: I don't have a sewing machine.

However, instead of walking around with the boring mouth masks, I still want to be stylish and colorful.

That's why I got smart. I'll show you how to make a mouth guard yourself, and without a sewing machine.

Important: These instructions for making your own mouthguard are only a makeshift mask. It does not filter germs, viruses or bacteria from the air.

Why you should make a mouth guard yourself

Since the coronavirus has been circulating, nasal-mouth masks are in short supply. Paramedics, nurses, caregivers, doctors all need the masks urgently.

So, if it is possible for you, you should leave the masks to all those who need them very urgently at work.

A homemade mouth guard serves the same purpose.

The big advantage is also that you are doing nature a big favor.

Instead of throwing away the mask after wearing it once, you can simply wash the homemade ones at 60° and reuse them.

And homemade masks also look pretty. Instead of boring white or turquoise masks, you wear them with a lot of style. If you want, you can also use the instructions to make mouth masks in different colors.

Coordinated with your outfit. So you do not have to do without style this spring :)

What you need for your DIY makeshift mouth mask

Here you will learn today how you can make a face mask yourself - without a sewing machine. You'll be surprised how easy it is. For this I have come up with two variants.

On the one hand, a mask for those who do not have a sewing machine and needle and thread at home. If it's like you, but you still want to make a mouth mask, then I'll show you a very simple folding technique. By folding you turn a piece of fabric into a mask.

And on the other hand, a mask for those who could sew, but do not have a sewing machine. For this you need a needle and thread.

So you just sew the mask by hand. So that you do not need forever for this, there are a few tips and tricks that will help you.

But let's look at this in more detail.

Variant 1 - Make your own mouth mask without sewing

Completely without sewing comes this nose and mouth guard. You simply fold the mask with a few light handles into the desired shape.

The great advantage of this is that you can return the cloth to its original shape after wearing it.

And if you're as skilled at sewing as I am, this method also gives you the advantage of not hurting yourself 😁

What you need

  • 1 cotton cloth approx. 50×50 cm
  • 2 elastic cords each 25 cm long

Place the cloth in front of you on the table.

Cut it in half by pulling the top end towards you and folding it over.

Repeat the process. The cloth is now quartered in front of you.

Flatten it with your hands.

Tie a knot in both rubber cords so that you get two closed rings. We will need these cords later to attach the mask to the ears. Alternatively, you can use two hair ties.

Pin the cords onto the cloth. You should now divide the cloth into about three equal pieces.

First fold the right side of the cloth in half.

The cord is exactly at the point where you bend the cloth inward. You should now see an edge of the fabric - a corner.

Unfold the corner.

Now fold the left side of the fabric inward. Put all the fabric of the left side into the right unfolded part of the fabric. The cloth should now hold in itself.

Variation 2 - Sew mouth mask without sewing machine

If you have already sewn something in between, but simply do not have a sewing machine at home, then it also works with needle and thread. This variant is a bit more complex than the previous one.

What you need

  • 2 fabrics 24 x 19 cm
  • Needle, thread
  • 2 elastic cords ca 17 cm long

For those who find it easier with a video, here's a tutorial on Youtube.

And if you want to read it again, you can do so here.

Cut the fabric 2x to the dimensions 24 x 19 cm.

Place the fabric pieces with the nice side on top of each other.

Pin the fabrics together with pins. Sew the fabrics together along the edges with needle and thread.

Leave about 5 cm open on one side. So you can now pull the inside of the fabric to the outside. Once you have done this, you can close the hole.

Now you can form the three folds. Pin them in place with pins. Sew the folds by bending the edge about 1 cm inwards.

However, leave the bottom and top free so that we can attach the cord right here.

Push the rubber bands through the opening, knot them and your mouth guard is ready without a sewing machine!

What you need to know about the homemade breathing masks

Whether they are folded, sewn or made with a sewing machine - all DIY variants have one thing in common: they do NOT protect the wearer from the Corona virus.

But then why should I wear them at all? Are you asking yourself that right now?

It makes a lot of sense to make and wear a mouth guard yourself.

1. external protection

The big challenge with Covid-19 is that a lot of people are infected without having symptoms. That's good for them, but bad for everyone else.

Because even without symptoms, they are carriers of the virus.

It could also be that you already have the virus without realizing it. If you wear a mask, you protect your environment. When you breathe, talk and sneeze, only very few droplets are passed on from now on.

If everyone wears a mouth guard, the likelihood of infection decreases.

But very important: Just because you wear a mask, you still have to keep the safe distance and wash or disinfect your hands regularly.

2. self-protection

Even if the mask does not protect you from the cornavirus, there is a great deal of self-protection.

We unconsciously reach into our faces very often. Up to 500 times a day.

At home, the problem is less, because we wash our hands. On the road it is often difficult.

If you wear a protective mask, you are automatically reminded not to touch your face. And if it does happen, at least your mouth and nose are protected.

Our conclusion

If you want to make a mouthguard yourself, you don't even need a sewing machine. With a few simple stitches or a sophisticated folding technique, anything is possible. :)

Stay healthy!
