You are looking for a natural wound and healing ointment? Then you should make marigold ointment yourself! I'll show you today how to make a calendula cream and what you need to pay attention to.

We've all had scraped knees, open sores on our hands, as well as cuts and burns. It hurts and takes a long time to heal.

A good wound and healing ointment supports the skin in healing and prevents germs from entering the wound.

With the yellow-orange flowers of the marigold (Calendula officinalis) you can easily make such a cream yourself from June to the end of September.

Even my grandmother swore by calendula ointment and applied it to us children for minor injuries or even on her dry hands after gardening.

So that this knowledge is not lost, I decided to tell you the recipe. I would like to show you now how you can make your own calendula ointment step by step.

Why is it worth making a homemade calendula cream?

Of course, you can also buy calendula ointment in a pharmacy. However, these ointments very often contain additional ingredients such as palm oil, lanolin, Glycerin*steoric acid and corn oil. These ingredients are less suitable for sensitive skin.

If you make your own cream, you can safely do without these ingredients. You only need 3 ingredients, which you probably have at home.

A homemade calendula ointment also has a lot to offer. It contains numerous ingredients that have an antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, pain-relieving, circulation-promoting, decongestant and antispasmodic effect.

A calendula cream speeds up the healing of abrasions and is a good home remedy for rough, dry skin.

This is where the calendula ointment comes into play:

  • Wound healing
  • Varicose veins
  • Frostbite
  • Burns
  • Antispasmodic
  • Pain relief
  • Acne
  • Sunburn
  • Dry skin
  • Rashes
  • Strains
  • Crushes
  • Warts
  • Swellings
  • Eczema
  • Ulcers
  • Corns

With all these uses, it is obvious that your household should not be without a marigold cream.

What ingredients do I need to make a ringworm ointment myself?

The marigold cream is uncomplicated and can be made with only a few ingredients. There are 3 ingredients, to be exact.

And it doesn't have to be more than that. The fewer the ingredients, the better. This saves time when making the cream and also benefits your skin.

Make sure that you use high-quality products. This is especially true for Beeswax* and olive oil. You should harvest the marigold flowers fresh from the garden. To do this, clip off the flower heads with your fingernail. Wash the flowers with water and leave them to dry briefly.

In order for the active ingredients of the marigold to develop better, pluck the petals apart.

Marigold flowers

Calendula is said to have anti-inflammatory, analgesic, wound-healing, antibacterial, circulation-enhancing, antispasmodic and swelling-reducing properties.

They soothe irritated, dry skin and inflammation.

Because of the large number of positive properties, it pays to make a calendula cream yourself.

Use fresh flowers and not dried ones. Dried flowers are nice in teas or herbal salt mixtures, but no longer have enough power for a healing cream.

The fresher the flowers are, the better.

There are yellow and orange marigolds. And a distinction is made between higher specimens and very low. The ingredients are the same in all varieties, so you can use both yellow and orange flowers.

The best way to harvest the flowers is under these conditions

  • At noon, when the flowers are fully open
  • Ideally: no rain two days before
  • Only fully open flowers

Take only as many flowers as you really need. After all, there should be enough food left over for the insects. Calendula is one of the favorite flowers of many butterflies, bees, wild bees and bumblebees.

Beeswax

Another ingredient that should not be missing in your homemade cream is Beeswax*. The wax ensures that your cream has a firm and spreadable consistency. In addition, the Beeswax* moisturizes and helps with skin problems.

Beeswax* you can buy in yellow or white color. It makes no difference to the effect. Yellow wax is usually a little cheaper and provides a nice color. Wax can be bought as blocks, granules or in the form of thin sheets.

I recommend granules if you want to make calendula ointment yourself. It melts the fastest and is very easy to portion.

Cold pressed olive oil

Olive oil is not only used in the kitchen, but also in skin care. It stimulates cell renewal, acts against wrinkles and moisturizes the skin.

Please do not use cheap olive oil from the discount store. Your skin deserves better. I buy my olive oil in a delicatessen. The difference in the care properties and of course in the taste is enormous.

What you need to know about making calendula cream

There are a few more things I would like to point out to you before we start making the cream. You should read these carefully, especially if you have never made a calendula ointment yourself.

Sterilize work utensils

Before you start making the calendula cream, it is important that you clean and disinfect all the vessels. This will prevent bacteria from getting into the cream.

This gives it a longer shelf life. If you do not do this, then it can happen that mold forms - this applies to homemade creams as well as syrups or jams. If you're not sure how to do this, check here: "How to sterilize jars correctly!

Petals or whole flowers

Here the minds are divided. While some use the whole flower heads, others pluck off only the petals. Allegedly, the calyxes of the flowers are suspected of causing contact allergies in some people.

Whether this is true, I can not confirm. If you want to be on the safe side, pluck off only the petals.

Wash flowers

I do not wash the flowers. In the process, as with other wild herbs, many valuable ingredients are lost. I already take care when collecting the flowers not to catch any dirty petals.

If you want, when collecting, you can pluck off only the petals and leave the rest of the flower.

Insects

Very many insects love calendula flowers. They are magically attracted by the scent and color. If you collect the whole flower heads, leave them for about 30 minutes. In that time, most insects will get out of the way.

If, despite all attempts, there are still a few small bugs floating in the oil extract, you can strain them with a very fine sieve after the infusion time.

Two steps

In order to make a calendula ointment yourself, two steps are necessary. In the first step we prepare an oil extract. The fresh flowers are soaked in oil and left to stand for a while.

In the process, the flowers release their active ingredients into the oil. For the calendula ointment we then only need this oil extract, we throw away the flowers.

How to make calendula ointment yourself

The marigold cream is made in no time. Are you ready? Then let's get started right away.

Beeswax* and Cream jar* you can buy at Amazon.

For those who have never made a cream before, here comes a very detailed step-by-step guide. If you've made creams before and are just looking for inspiration, then you'll find a short version for the marigold cream at the end of the post.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups marigold flowers
  • 250 ml olive oil
  • 25 g beeswax

Also: scales, a sealable jar, fine sieve, pot, heat-resistant vessel, Cream jar*.

Prepare the oil extract

The basis for the calendula cream is an oil extract.

For this you need fresh flowers of marigolds, a cleaned, sealable jar and the olive oil.

Pick off the petals and put them in the cleaned jar. Now pour olive oil over the flowers. They should be completely covered.

Stir with a spoon.

Let the marigolds steep

In order for the marigolds to infuse properly in the oil, you need to seal the jar and store it in a dark place for two to eight weeks.

I put the jar in the pantry or in a cabinet with a door. Make sure that they never come into contact with the sun, because in this case the oil becomes warm and spoils. But you can also put it under the bed or in the closet - the main thing - no sun.

If you do not have a dark place, wrap the jar with newspaper or aluminum foil. But again, please do not put in the sun.

It is important that you shake the glass gently every day. Set a reminder for this on your cell phone.

The longer you let the flowers steep in oil, the better. I recommend waiting at least 4 weeks before moving on to the next step.

Warm the calendula oil

Wash the Cream jar* in which you want to fill the marigold ointment. Sterilize them and prepare them. So that nothing goes wrong when pouring the cream, I put the Cream jar* always on a newspaper. As a general rule, it is better to use several small jars than one large jar.

You'll need a saucepan, a strainer, a spoon or spatula, and a heatproof container - I use a glass jar. You can also use a glass jar with a large opening. And the Cream jar*.

Pour the oil with the flowers through a sieve. You can also use a coffee filter bag or a muslin cloth.

Now you throw the flowers.

Fill the pot until the water is about 5 cm high.

Bring the water to a boil. Place the heat-resistant container (with the oil) in the pot when the water is already cold.

As soon as it starts to boil, you can pull the pot off the stove.

Mix the ingredients

Once the calendula oil is warmed, you can add the beeswax, stirring constantly. Wait until the wax has completely dissolved in the oil.

The more often you stir the mixture before it solidifies, the better the calendula ointment can be applied later.

Lift the container out of the water bath and pour the liquid cream into the prepared cream jars.

Before you close the jars, let the cream cool.

What is the shelf life of Calendula Cream?

There are no preservatives in this cream. That is why it does not have such a long shelf life. Therefore, it is always worth making smaller quantities.

If you sterilize all containers and working utensils properly before you make the calendula ointment yourself, you can easily store it for up to three months.

It is best to put it in the refrigerator. So it does not spoil prematurely and provides an additional freshness kick during use.

By the way, it is better if you put the cream in dark Cream jars* fill. Thanks to the tint, dark jars have integrated light protection and ensure that the homemade marigold cream has a long shelf life.

Can you refine marigold ointment?

Making your own cream from 3 ingredients is not enough for you? Then you can of course refine it a little.

To increase the shelf life, you can stir in vitamin E drops. For 200 ml of cream you take about 5 drops.

In addition, the marigold cream can be combined very well with Lavender flowers* Refine. Add 1/2 tsp Lavender flowers* to the oil extract, your DIY cream will smell pleasantly of soothing lavender.

But I personally would not stir in much more. The more original the cream and the fewer ingredients, the better it is for the skin.

If you want to make a special calendula ointment yourself, because you want to give it as a gift, think about a nice label rather than mixing in more ingredients.

Make ointment with marigolds yourself

Can I grow marigolds on the balcony?

Marigolds are very undemanding plants and grow well on the balcony or in the garden. Just make sure they get enough light and water. If you choose a pot, it should be as deep as possible, because the plant forms a taproot.

You can get a flower at the nursery to start, and then continue to grow it every year. After flowering, marigolds form their seeds. Just scatter them in a pot, put a little soil over them. You can also leave them outside in the winter. They start to sprout in March.

Once you have calendula in the garden, it comes again every year by itself, if you scatter the seed.

Already in May, the orange or yellow flowers begin to bloom. From the flowers you can then make your own calendula ointment whenever you want!

You can also add marigold flowers to salad, stir into tea blends or use as a use colorful ingredient in herb butter.

And here, as promised, the short version of the recipe for those who regularly deal with natural cosmetics.
