Are you also a caffeine junkie and can't do without your morning latte macchiato? But have you ever wondered if your beloved coffee makes you fat? Then you should definitely read on now.

For me as a coffee lover, it's an important question: Does coffee make you fat? Because nothing works for me without coffee.

Does this sound familiar? Then put your coffee cup aside for a moment and read on.

Until now, we always thought that coffee should even help you lose weight and has hardly any calories. After all, many swear by coffee before a workout or on a diet.

The hot caffeine drink is all the rage and is finding more and more fans. But watch out, there are nasty calorie traps lurking in the coffee cup. Coffee makes you fat if you're not careful.

Find out how your daily coffee break can continue to be an indulgent moment without a guilty conscience and why coffee can make you fat.

Does coffee really make you fat?

We don't talk around the hot coffee for long and want to know: Does coffee make you fat?

Unfortunately, there is no clear answer to this question. Not all coffee is the same.

Coffee alone does not make you fat. We can reveal that much. A hot cup (200ml) of coffee has an average of just four calories.

However, these top values change quite quickly as soon as you mix your black hot beverage with sugar, milk or syrup. No sooner have you taken a sip than the calorie content shoots up.

Besides the foods you can add to it, the ingredients in coffee also do a lot to make you fat or not. Some scientists still disagree about this.

Let's take a closer look at this whole "does coffee make you fat" affair. After all, coffee is one of the most popular hot drinks in Germany.

Do the ingredients in coffee make you fat?

Many swear by coffee when it comes to losing weight. Other studies say that coffee makes you gain weight and even reduces your weight loss success. So which is true? Does coffee make you fat or does it help you lose weight?

Unfortunately, the whole thing is a "two-sided coffee bean."

The Journal of Food says that coffee prevents your pounds from melting off, according to a study. Coffee suppresses our fatigue, we probably all appreciate that. However, if the metabolism is properly in step, we lose weight during sleep.

Coffee is also said to reduce your perception of sugar. That means you don't notice how sweet something tastes. This leads to the fact that in the worst case you develop a greater need for sweetness and add another portion of sugar or open the tempting cookie package.

Coffee can unfortunately spike your blood sugar levels. A craving that results from this is not exactly helpful in a diet! From this point of view, our beloved coffee makes you fat!

On the other hand, many advise coffee when you are dieting. This is due to the low calories in pure coffee and the caffeine it contains.

The drink is said to suppress your hunger pangs and boost metabolism.

Caffeine stimulates your central nervous system, the activity of the intestinal walls and so coffee activates fat burning. These are great supporting factors in a diet. Two cups of espresso a day increase your calorie consumption by about 100 calories. That sounds very good.

Does coffee make you fat or not

That's why sports pros often drink espresso before their workout. What professionals do before a workout should also be good for us normal people, right? Coffee can't make you fat ...can it?

Unfortunately, it is once again not that clear-cut.

A cup as a delicious conclusion after your meal can be quite a tasty help in the diet and help you lose weight. But beware: a cup of coffee alone does not make a diet. The hot drink can be a great support and perhaps the start of a new, healthier lifestyle.

But if you fall into a little coffee frenzy and you drink three, four or five cups after a meal, coffee can make you fat. The negative effects take hold and you could get a food craving or disrupt your sleep.

Do sugar, milk and syrup in coffee make you fat?

Now we come to the big spoilers when it comes to specialty coffees and the very modern coffee experience. We've already given you a bit of a heads up. Coffee alone, with its 4 calories per 200 ml, probably doesn't make you fat.

The situation is completely different when milk, sugar or sweet syrup are added to the cup! A latte macchiato usually has 200 to 300 kilocalories. Firstly, your coffee is diluted and the good properties can not fully develop and secondly, unfortunately, you often conjure up a really explosive calorie bomb.

We all know it: as soon as we stand in line at our favorite coffee shop, our mouths start watering just by reading the drink menu. Iced mocha with caramel and cream? Vanilla macchiato? Cinnamon* Frappuccino with nut syrup? If it were up to me, I could go on listing them forever.

I know, these coffee creations taste heavenly. But they unfortunately no longer have much to do with coffee. In this form, unfortunately, coffee really makes you fat!

Syrup, cream, sugar and milk galore can easily push the calorie content up to the 500, 600 or even 700 kilocalorie mark. As a guide, a main meal should have about the same calorie content.

The sugar content is not bad either. More than 10 percent of these mixed coffee drinks is often sugar. A Frappuccino creation from a major coffee chain even contains 82 grams of sugar in the largest size (circa 600ml).

I don't want to spoil your coffee enjoyment, but you must first become aware of these values.

Coffee prepared incorrectly can be a really nasty calorie bomb and make you fat!

So coffee does not make you fat

Believe me, as a coffee junkie, this question was so heavy on my mind.

The all-clear! No, you don't have to give up your beloved morning coffee or the cup during your lunch break. You just need to know how to drink your coffee so you don't get fat. And that's exactly what I'm going to tell you.

Of course, you should avoid the thick cream-syrup coffees - especially if you want to lose weight. Of course, you can treat yourself to a calorie bomb every now and then.

However, if you want to eat healthier and calorie-conscious, the white chocolate mocha must not load in your belly after every lunch. Because again, coffee makes you fat.

Sweeten coffee properly so that it does not become a calorie bomb

I can totally understand that the bitter taste of coffee is not everyone's cup of tea. So we need alternatives to sugar, milk and syrup.

You like it sweet? Then try sugar alternatives like honey or stevia, Agave syrup* or Xylitol*. Xylitol* has up to 60 percent fewer calories than conventional sugar!

Natural sweeteners usually have a certain taste of their own. You should try out what you like best in your coffee.

Coffee fattener

Dilute coffee properly so that it does not make you fat

If you want to dilute your coffee a bit, you can try rice milk, oat milk or soy milk instead of cow's milk. These milk alternatives only have about two to five calories when you add a shot of them to your coffee.

Here you have to try out a bit which variant you like best. I myself now prefer to drink my coffee with oat milk.

Whole milk contains 27 calories per 10 ml.

So a coffee you mix with whole milk may make you fatter than one with rice milk.

Or you could boil up a very mild type of coffee and see if you like it straight?

Pimp coffee properly so that it does not make you fat

For that special kick of flavor, you can substitute for syrup times Baking cocoa* or Cinnamon* into your coffee. This will make your coffee much lower in calories than a very sugary syrup.

Drink coffee at the appropriate times

In general, coffee is often less fattening if you make and refine it yourself.

You have full control over what ends up in your cup and the hot caffeine drink doesn't secretly become a calorie trap.

My second grab in the morning goes straight to the coffee pot. Your day is barely five minutes old and already the sweetened latte ends up in your favorite cup? I know!

Especially at the beginning of the day, you should drink your coffee as naturally as possible. Espresso is particularly effective in the morning.

Thus, your organism can start directly in the morning with a stimulated metabolism. The positive effect can extend throughout the day.

As the day gets older, your coffee drink should be lower in calories. Excessive sugar unbalances your blood sugar levels and then promotes cravings.

Pure coffee in most cases does not make you fat and has the most effective effect on the digestive system and fat burning.

Also, the "wake-up" effect is strongest from natural coffee, I've noticed with myself.

Coffee gain or lose weight

Our conclusion

Coffee can make you fat. Coffee can also help you lose weight. It all depends on how and when you drink it. Not all coffee is the same.

But one thing is certain for me: coffee is part of it!

If you prepare it yourself, drink it straight or use low-calorie alternative products for mixing, you can enjoy it with a clear conscience. You now know where the nasty calorie traps are hiding in the coffee cup and how to avoid coffee mistakes.

You enjoy your coffee consciously from now on, so it can work its benefits well and still taste delicious.
