Time to bring some color into your hair. So you can make highlights yourself and make your mane shine again!

Your hair looks kind of boring? Then it's time for a change!

Small, subtle highlights put beautiful highlights in your hair. They also make your mane look fuller and make it look more lively.

You don't have to go to the hairdresser for that. Because doing highlights yourself is really not difficult. Even beginners can do it without any problems.

I will show you today how this works step by step.

What you need to know if you want to do highlights yourself

Before we get started, you should know a few general tips.

If you follow this, everything will go smoothly:

  • Do not save the excess paint. As soon as it comes into contact with air, it is no longer needed - you can't be sure what the result will be next time.
  • Always wear old clothes when coloring hair, so if something goes wrong, it's not a shame.
  • Always put on gloves. I take tight-fitting gloves for this not the ones that are in the package with most colors. So you have a better feeling when applying the paint.
  • Do not inhale the powder dust when mixing the paint.
  • If you want to make highlights yourself, use the conditioner that is in the package. It ensures that the color stays beautiful for a long time and the hair is cared for.
  • Do not dye your hair too often. Give them at least 3 weeks rest.

Determine the width of the strands

If you want to do your own highlights, you first need to decide on the thickness of the strands.

What would you like to have:

  • Ultrafine highlights,
  • medium highlights,
  • really wide block strands,
  • or even multicolored strands?

If you have never done highlights yourself, then I recommend medium highlights. With ultra-fine highlights you will despair at the beginning. It takes quite a long time. Wide block strands should be caught in exactly the right thickness, so that they work. Also, the transition to the roots can be very noticeable if your natural hair color is dark.

And multicolored strands are taboo for beginners. After all, you have to take a lot of things into account. From the strength of the highlights to the matching of colors - and the correct estimation of how the selected colors will look on your own hair.

In general, it can be said: A few wide strands create an eye-catching look. Fine to medium highlights look natural.

This is what I recommend for hair coloring

Choose the color of the strands

Blonde highlights in the hair look simply wonderful. If you have light blonde to medium brown hair, you can do this at home in the bathroom. Depending on the product and brand, you can color your hair up to six shades lighter.

The color affects hair colors differently. If you have very dark hair, then it may not work so well with the blonde. To make blond highlights in dark brown or even black hair is not for beginners. You have to bleach the hair strands first and then apply the actual color. In addition, despite subsequent color treatment, a yellow or orange cast may remain.

If you are unsure, you should first try the color on a single strand, if your color choice is very daring, then choose a strand on the lower head. Worst case you can hide them well :)

If you want a natural look, then stick to your base color and just choose a few light shades here. So if you have dark brown hair, choose a light brown as a highlight rather than a light blonde.

The exposure time always begins when all strands are pulled!

Choose the right method

There are several ways how to make highlights yourself. I present you all three, so you can choose the right one for you.

  • Highlights hoods are optimal for beginners.
  • Comb strands also succeed well for beginners.
  • Dyeing with a brush requires a little skill.
  • The comb applicator is good for skilled women.

Why you don't need foils for dyeing

Have you ever had highlights done at the hairdresser? Then you know the foil method for sure.

But you don't need to do this at home. At least not if you choose only one color. Foil streaks are used when more than one color is streaked.

But if you have very long hair, they can help you apply the color better.

How to dye your hair with a highlights cap

There are great tools for those who want to do highlights themselves. One is the highlight cap. With it you can get a very natural look, because the highlights are well distributed over the whole head.

For this method, however, you need to allow a little time. You'll need at least 20 minutes to get all the strands sorted the way you want them.

For beginners, there's a very clear recommendation from me! After time you will develop a better feeling and can do without the hood.

Let's take a step by step look at how you can do highlights yourself using a highlight cap.

Prepare hair

Comb your hair thoroughly. Tie them loosely under the chin.

Put on the hood. The hairs on the back of the neck are left out of this method, so they do not come under the hood. Cover them with a towel.

Pull through strands

In the package you will find a stranding needle - if not, it also works with a crochet needle. Now pull the strands through the holes piece by piece. Make sure that they are the same size.

If you do not want so many highlights, you can also use only every second or third hole. Now comb the strands again well.

Make highlights yourself

Once you have completed the preparations, it's time to color your hair. First you need to mix the highlight color. Put on gloves.

Apply the color to each strand individually with a brush. Make sure that you distribute the color evenly. How long the color should be left on depends on your hair color and how light you want it to be. You can find a guide in the package instructions.

Rinse paint

So, now you're almost done. The last step is to rinse the color out of the strands. To do this, first use only clear water and leave the hood on.

Once you have rinsed your hair with water, you can remove the cap. Shampoo your hair as usual and apply a conditioner.

Ready!

Beautiful strands dye with a comb

You have not had good experiences with the hood? Then of course it also works wonderfully with a normal comb.

This method is also good for beginners and you are much faster than with a highlights cap. The comb method is very suitable for longer hair. You need a coarse-toothed comb for this.

Prepare the hair

Comb your hair very thoroughly. Part your hair in the same place where you usually wear it.

Divide the hair horiziontal into 5-6 equal parts.

Put a towel under your shoulders and you're ready to go.

Make highlights yourself with a comb

Dip the tips of the comb into the paint.

Grab the first section of hair. Pull the comb through strands at a time.

It looks most natural if you do this at varying distances - about 1 to 2 inches from the hairline.

Go hairpiece by hairpiece. At the back of the head helps a mirror.

Wash hair

Leave the paint on as long as it says on the package.

Wash out the hair color with water and rinse with shampoo and conditioner.

What you have to pay attention to when you want to make highlights yourself with a brush

Or how about a brush? More precisely, a highlight brush.

The big advantage is that now - unlike with the hood - you can color the whole head.

If you have long hair, then I recommend using foils. This makes applying the color much easier.

Prepare hair

As with the cap, you must first prepare your hair for coloring. Comb your hair thoroughly. Part your hair the way you normally wear it.

Put a towel on your shoulders. Now you're ready to go!

Make highlights yourself

When you have prepared everything, then mix the highlights mixture. Pick up the color with the brush and apply it to the strands of hair.

This works best if you hold the strand away from the head. Or you can use the comb to separate fine strands and then brush them with color. Make sure that the color nit comes into contact with the scalp.

Professional tip: Do not color the strands all the way to the hairline, but only half a centimeter below and blend the transition with your fingers. This looks much more natural.

Dyeing the back of the head is indeed a complicated undertaking. If you have two large mirrors, you can help yourself out with this. Or you can get someone to help you.

Rinse paint

Now rinse the color with water and then wash the hair with a shampoo. Be sure to apply a conditioner, it nourishes the streaked hair and makes it silky soft.

Rinse, dry and ready!

How to dye blonde highlights with a comb applicator

Have you ever heard of a comb applicator for hair coloring? With a highlight applicator and a comb attachment, you can put the color bottle directly on. However, this requires a little practice, I do not recommend this method to beginners. It can quickly happen that the applied color becomes uneven.

Prepare the hair

Try the applicator on a piece of paper to get a feel for how much pressure you need to apply.

Comb the hair well. Pull a zigzag parting, so that the result looks more natural.

Put a towel on your shoulders and off you go!

Highlights dye with applicator

Pull the applicator from the hairline vertically and in one stroke to the tips. Important: Apply an even pressure.

You can practice it beforehand with a regular comb to get a feel. It is not difficult. You just have to make sure that you don't take breaks.

Soak and rinse

Leave the color on and then rinse with water. Wash with a shampoo and apply a hair care product.

Ready.

What you need to pay attention to after dyeing

Whether it's the whole head, or you only have small highlights in your hair - colored hair needs the right care. It ensures that the color is intense for a long time and the mane does not look straw-like.

When an unwanted yellow tint appears, it is particularly annoying. But you can remove it with a silver shampoo. You can buy the shampoo at a hairdresser or order much cheaper on Amazon.

If you bleach your hair often, disulfide bridges can occur. They change the color pigments and the hair becomes dull and porous. Use preventive care shampoos and suitable conditioners.

In addition, there are many shampoos for colored hair. They ensure that the color quality is maintained for a long time and you do not have to do highlights yourself after a short time.

You should not blow dry colored hair too often. The heat of the blow dryer can make the hair brittle faster.

Our conclusion

If you want to make highlights yourself, you have many options. It is important that you care for your hair properly after coloring. You should always treat streaked hair with the color protection treatment that you will find in the packaging. It nourishes the mane and makes the color shine.

Colored hair also needs a lot of moisture. Always use a conditioner!
