Wondering if a home whitening experience is worth it? I have tested whether you can really get white teeth at home and tell you everything you need to know about it.

If you're a bit into teeth whitening, you'll be bombarded with ads for whitening products on Instagram. You've probably seen it on influencers too. It sounds pretty promising.

And let's be honest: Who doesn't want a bright white smile like the stars and starlets? At the dentist, this can quickly become very expensive. If it can be done in the living room, why not save a little money?

I got curious if home bleaching really works and tried it myself.

I'm sure you're just as curious and have lots of questions. That's why I'm sharing my home bleaching experience with you and telling you everything you're probably dying to know.

What Home Bleaching is in the first place

Who doesn't wish for a radiant Hollywood smile like the one Julia Roberts has? But unfortunately, coffee, tea, red wine and other foods throw a spanner in the works. They cause teeth to discolor, become stained, and take on a yellowish tinge.

The answer to this beauty problem: bleaching.

Bleaching means bleaching. And that's exactly what happens with home bleaching. We whiten our teeth so that they look brighter, more radiant and healthier.

Home bleaching is the most uncomplicated and inexpensive method of whitening teeth. You don't have to go to the dentist for it. There are many different methods for whitening at home. These include whitening kits, whitening strips, Activated carbon* or Coconut oil*.

I decided to bleach with the whitening kit. It is supposed to be possible to whiten the teeth up to 9 shades, at least the advertising promises.

I integrate this bleaching method into my beauty routine. It can be used daily. However, there are no immediate results, the teeth should become brighter from application to application.

The kit consists of a mouthpiece with LED lamp, whitening gel, Activated carbon* and a toothbrush.

How exactly the whitening kit is applied, I tell you a little further down.

Why I want to have my own home bleaching experience

Bright white teeth when smiling - who does not wish for that?

Although I have to admit that I already have very white teeth, I am still far from the Hollywood smile and would like to have even whiter teeth.

For whitening at the dentist, however, you have to dig deep into your pocket. But there is supposed to be another solution. Celebrities and influencers are demonstrating it on social media channels and showing how to get a radiant smile from the comfort of your sofa. The photos and videos are very promising.

Whitening gel up, mouthpiece in and after only 6 applications your teeth should be many times whiter.

But what is behind the home bleaching trend and do you really achieve such glaring results?

My interest was definitely aroused and I started with This home bleaching set tried my luck.

It does not contain aggressive peroxides that cause pain on sensitive teeth. The set is clinically tested and recommended by dentists.

What speaks for teeth whitening

You're probably wondering whether the purchase of a whitening kit really pays off or whether there are any side effects. I did some research before my home bleaching experience and compared the pros and cons.

Home Bleaching Advantages

  • Cost-effective - compared to other whitening methods, you can save a lot here.
  • Uncomplicated - The application is anything but difficult.
  • Long life - You can use the whitening kit for a very long time. The mouthpiece and gel pens can usually be reordered.
  • Time-saving - teeth whitening takes only 15 minutes. You can easily do household chores, watch TV or other things during home bleaching.
  • Results that can be seen - after just a few applications, your teeth will be nuances brighter.

Home Bleaching Disadvantages

  • The whitening is not as intense as with dental bleaching
  • No instant effect - you need to use it over a longer period of time.
  • The whitening usually does not last very long.
  • This is not advisable for sensitive teeth - pain or a hypersensitivity reaction to cold, heat, sweet or sour may well occur.
  • Crowns or fillings are not bleached.
  • Incorrect use can attack and damage the enamel and gums.

My Home Bleaching Experience

There it lies now, the UniqueSmile Home Bleaching Set. It's waiting to make my teeth whiter. And I am already really excited.

When I open the box, I find a small box Activated carbon*a wooden toothbrush, the LED mouthpiece with 4 adapters, 3 whitening gel pens, a shade guide and the instructions.

First, I read through the instructions very carefully. Here you can also find some tips that additionally influence the result.

In the next step, I try to find my current shade of teeth with the help of the shade guide and apply it for day 1. This makes it easier for me to check how many levels lighter my teeth are after application.

Then it's time to brush my teeth. First I brush my teeth as usual with toothpaste. Then I brush again with the wooden toothbrush and the Activated carbon*. This ensures that the teeth are optimally prepared for use.

Now I put the whitening gel on my teeth. It should be a 2-3 mm thick layer. With the pen, the application works quite easily. The gel has no special taste. It tastes very neutral. If you want, you can dry your teeth before applying the whitening gel. However, it is not absolutely necessary.

Next, I plug the mouthpiece into my phone and put it in my mouth. I turn it on at the button on the cable. Now it's a matter of waiting. The application lasts 15 minutes. I don't feel any pain or unpleasant sensation while I have the LED light in my mouth. However, the light is very blinding, so I have my eyes closed during the application time.

However, you can also make good use of the time during use. Because with the mouthpiece, you are fully mobile and can do things like housework, cooking or hanging up laundry. Or you can make yourself comfortable on the couch and watch TV or scroll through Insta, TikTok and co. on your cell phone.

Attention: But be careful not to swallow your saliva! The gel can damage the throat in the long term.

When the time is up, you will hear a beep.

I take out the mouthpiece and remove the whitening gel by rinsing my mouth with lukewarm water.

To ensure that the LED mouthpiece is hygienically clean again for the next use, I clean it under cold tap water with a soft toothbrush. The included bamboo toothbrush is perfect for this.

What I can say after prolonged use

Home whitening has been part of my evening routine for 6 days now. In fact, my teeth became a little brighter. I would say by 2 shades. However, since I already had very white teeth before, you hardly notice it.

I had no pain during the application and also afterwards I could not notice any side effects, such as cold sensation or the like.

It's definitely worth having your own home bleaching experience. Especially if you have very severe discoloration.

Teeth bleaching at home

What you should consider when whitening teeth at home

Clean your teeth

Home bleaching is best done before going to bed. Before you whiten your teeth, you should clean them thoroughly. Best with Activated carbon*. This allows the bleaching agent to be better absorbed by your teeth.

In addition, you should first avoid staining foods such as tea, coffee and cigarettes, so that you can see the result after the application.

Who should refrain from teeth whitening

Pregnant women and children should not whiten their teeth. During pregnancy, the hormone level increases. This increases the blood supply to the gums and makes them looser. Home bleaching only makes this worse.

In children and adolescents under the age of 18, the tooth enamel is not yet fully mature, which is why tooth whitening is not recommended here either.

In addition, bleaching should be avoided in these cases:

  • with tooth nerves close to the tooth surface
  • many and large fillings
  • Sensitive teeth
  • Cracks in the enamel
  • Braces

How long your teeth stay white

The whitening effect of home bleaching can only be seen after several applications. The result depends entirely on your teeth, your eating and drinking habits and the product used.

However, most products already produce a slight lightening effect after four to five applications. With regular use, a clear difference can be seen after about four weeks.

However, after four weeks you should definitely stop using it and take a break for four weeks.

What distinguishes home bleaching from teeth whitening at the dentist's office

You can get the most professional and effective tooth whitening at the dentist. Power bleaching ensures that your teeth are a few shades brighter immediately after treatment.

Unlike home whitening, which you have to use regularly, whitening at the dentist lasts up to three years.

During bleaching, your mouth is held open with gentle clamps, and the gums are coated with a rubbery varnish that is gentle on them. Then a concentrated whitening agent is applied to the teeth.

Your teeth are then irradiated with a soft laser for about 15 minutes. This process is repeated until the desired brightness level is reached.

The advantage over home bleaching is that the treatment is done under medical supervision, you have an instant result with strong whitening and your teeth stay in the desired shade for up to 3 years.

However, treatment at the dentist is usually very expensive and often painful.

Teeth bleaching

My conclusion

I hope my home bleaching experience has answered your questions. All I can say is that it is really worth trying the Withening Kit yourself. Provided your teeth and gums are healthy. It's best to discuss it with your dentist beforehand.

Just try it!
