There are countless reasons why you should reconsider using store-bought toothpastes. Making your own toothpaste is healthy, saves money and is easy.

We all attach great importance to healthy and white teeth. But have you ever thought about what goes into your toothpaste?

If you take a look at the back, you'll discover a long list of chemical ingredients. These are anything but healthy, say many natural cosmetics experts.

Our oral mucosa is very permeable and absorbs much of what is in the cream. No matter whether fluoride, sodium lauryl sulfate or parabens.

Yet these unhealthy ingredients are not necessary at all and can be replaced quite easily.

Making your own toothpaste is anything but complicated. With just a few simple steps you can make your own DIY toothpaste.

Tip: To make sure that not only your toothpaste is plastic-free, but also your toothbrush, you should buy yourself a Bamboo toothbrush to the toothbrush. Although the feeling of wood in the mouth is a bit strange at first, you'll get used to it after the third time of brushing at the latest. That's a promise!

What ingredients do I need for homemade toothpaste?

Before we get right to the instructions, I would like to say a few words about the ingredients. I want to tell you how they work and what role they play in the DIY toothpaste.

I avoid additives such as aspartame, fluoride and triclosan, which you can find in store-bought products. And instead pack natural ingredients into the homemade toothpaste.

You have a free choice of ingredients. However, you should think very carefully about what properties your toothpaste should have. Then you can choose the right ingredients and adapt them to your tooth type.

A DIY toothpaste should have the following properties:

  • Gently cleans the teeth
  • cares for your gums
  • Prevents inflammation and caries
  • should taste good
  • consists of purely natural ingredients
  • is uncomplicated to produce

Of course, my DIY recipe meets all these requirements. Let's take a look at the ingredients:

Coconut oil for healthy white teeth

Coconut oil* has an antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal and antiparasitic effect. It has an unobtrusive taste and ensures that the toothpaste has the right consistency.

Coconut oil* protects and cleans your teeth. The caprylic acid and lauric acid reduce the risk of tooth decay.

But make sure that you choose a virgin and cold-pressed oil. This contains all the valuable minerals and vitamins that should definitely end up in the DIY toothpaste.

Soda to make toothpaste yourself

Baking soda* acts as an abrasive and slightly brightens the teeth. It also creates a good pH value in the mouth. It neutralizes caries-causing bacteria and prevents damage to the teeth.

Caution: The powder must be very fine and, if necessary, still be ground.

Those who have sensitive teeth should Baking soda* simply leave out. If you use too much Baking soda*, the enamel may be attacked.

Xylitol against caries

It is also known under the name Birch sugar* and protects your teeth from caries, tartar and plaque.

Birch sugar* also ensures good taste and reduces bad breath.

Turmeric for white teeth

The Indian medicinal plant is the perfect ingredient for your homemade toothpaste. The yellow dye is very intense and makes the teeth beautifully white.

However, be careful that the powder does not come into contact with your clothes. The stains can hardly be removed and are stubborn.

If you have damaged tooth enamel, you should rather avoid turmeric. Here it discolors the teeth more than it whitens them.

By the way: You can also simply omit turmeric.

Essential oil for good taste

If you want to make toothpaste yourself, of course it needs a good taste. So far, it tastes sweetly of turmeric and Coconut oil*. To change the taste of your toothpaste, you can use natural oils. Peppermint oil* goes perfectly with toothpaste and makes your mouth feel fresh.

On top of that Peppermint oil* Anti-inflammatory. Alternatively, fennel oil or lemon oil can also be used.

You can use herbs in the form of an essential oil or simply add them dried. Simply grind them finely with a mortar and add them to the mass. You can use herbs in the form of an essential oil or simply add them dried. Just grind them finely with a mortar and add them to the mass.

How do I use the cream correctly?

The toothpaste is optimal when at room temperature it is slightly softer than Coconut oil* but is noticeably firmer than purchased products.

  • Rinse the mouth, make the bristles slightly wet.
  • Use a small spoon to apply the cream to the toothbrush. This way you can be sure that you do not transfer any impurities from the brush head into the cream.
  • Brush your teeth as usual.

The homemade toothpaste may be a little unusual at first. But the cleaning effect is just as good as with conventional toothpaste.

The cream smells pleasantly of mint and has a slight coconut note in the finish. In the mouth, the cream melts very quickly because Coconut oil* becomes liquid at 24° Celsius. Homemade toothpaste does not foam.

My teeth feel very clean after brushing and I have a pleasant minty taste in my mouth.

What is the shelf life of coconut oil toothpaste?

The shelf life of the cream depends on the expiration date of the coconut oil. Nevertheless, you should use it up as soon as possible. Just mix smaller quantities.

You'll also protect your toothpaste from germs if you put it on your toothbrush with a spoon or spatula.

On warm days you should store the toothpaste in the refrigerator. The coconut oil becomes liquid at about 24 degrees and the Baking soda* then settles faster on the floor.

Why you should make your own toothpaste

Conventional toothpastes contain a lot of unhealthy ingredients. This is also a reason why it is always pointed out that the toothpaste must not be swallowed.

Aspartame is one of the controversial substances in purchased toothpastes. It is a sweetener that is supposed to provide a better taste.

When your body processes this sweetener, it creates dangerous toxins that can promote memory loss or even depression. Especially people with metabolic diseases suffer from the consequences.

At the same time there is a much healthier option, as Birch sugar* or stevia.

Microplastics are small plastic balls that you find in almost every toothpaste. They are supposed to thicken the toothpaste. But you can also find microplastics in many other cosmetic products.

And we all know that plastic harms the body. The environment is not spared either, as the beads end up in the drain again.

One more reason to make your own toothpaste.

Fluorides is a toxic substance, but also hardens and stabilizes the enamel. Those who have problems with caries, get support with the fluoride.

However, those who do not have to struggle with caries should do without it. This is because it ensures that minerals are broken down.

Triclosan is another substance that speaks for making toothpaste yourself. It destroys bacteria, but it also destroys your healthy oral flora, which actually protects your body from dangerous foreign substances.

Therefore, you should definitely use a toothpaste without triclosan. The substance is also suspected of being carcinogenic.

These are just a few ingredients of a conventional toothpaste. But the list is much longer. And with it, you've probably brushed your teeth several times a day.

Surely you will give these harmful substances a wide berth in the future and make your own toothpaste.

What are the criticisms of homemade toothpaste?

Dental experts from the German Dental Association (BZÄK) and the German Society for Preventive Dentistry (DGPZM) advise against making your own toothpaste. They see two major problems with DIY recipes:

  • Lack of fluoride: The BZÄK website states that the use of toothpastes containing fluoride is an effective measure against caries. Öko-Test and Stiftung Warentest also devalue toothpastes that are fluoride-free.
  • Harmful ingredients: In many DIY recipes come Citric acid*, Baking soda* or slurry chalk are used. In excessive quantities, they cause abrasion of tooth enamel and can therefore damage the tooth substance.

We therefore recommend regular visits to the dentist and DIY products not to be completely replaced by purchased toothpaste, but always in combination. There is a whole range of organic toothpastes that pay attention to recycled packaging.

Our conclusion

Making your own toothpaste is not witchcraft. It's super easy and only you decide which ingredients go into your paste. There is no trace of chemical substances. You and the environment do with a homemade toothpaste certainly something good.

Have fun making them!
