If you want to use flaxseed as an egg substitute, you've come to the right place! I'll tell you how you can use shredded flaxseed to replace chicken eggs.

If you don't want to use eggs for baking or simply forgot to buy any, then of course you can still make delicious cakes and breads.

Simply replacing it with water won't work. Because the binding in the dough that holds all the ingredients together has to come from somewhere.

In sauces, cakes, bread and baked goods of all kinds, a flaxseed egg can help.

Since I'm trying to limit my egg consumption a bit and experiment more, I've tried quite a few things. Bought egg substitute I do not use on principle. It is expensive and contains additives that do not have to be.

Until now I have many of my recipes with applesauce instead of eggs prepared. Since I discovered crushed linen for myself, I am completely thrilled and prefer to use them than applesauce.

Flaxseeds are simply the better eggs because they contain a lot of healthy fats and essential nutrients. As a fan of muesli, I always have them in the cupboard.

Why can you use flaxseed as an egg substitute?

Both conventional flaxseeds and ground ones absorb a lot of water. They swell and, in combination with water, become a slimy liquid, similar to egg whites.

The slimy, thick paste combines beautifully with flour and other ingredients that go into your batter. During baking, some of the water evaporates and the binding becomes even firmer.

You can use either ground or whole flax seeds to make the egg substitute.

I prefer ground seeds, because they have an even better binding and are no longer visible in the dough later. However, the flaxseed egg also works with whole seeds, but in some dishes this is a bit impractical, such as pancakes or fine cookies.

As an egg substitute are flax seeds

  • the perfect alternative to the chicken egg
  • versatile
  • tasteless
  • strongly water-binding
  • Packed with healthy fatty acids
  • ready for use in 5 minutes

How much flaxseed for one chicken egg?

You can replace one hen's egg with 6 grams of ground flaxseed and 45 ml of water. However, it is easier to remember it in tablespoons. Because 1 tablespoon makes one hen's egg.

  • 1 hen's egg: 1 tbsp. flaxseed to 45 ml warm water
  • 2 chicken eggs: 2 tablespoons of flaxseed to 90 ml of warm water.
  • 3 chicken eggs: 3 tablespoons of flaxseed to 135 ml of warm water.

How many eggs can I replace with the flax seeds?

I replace at most 2 chicken eggs with this egg substitute. If you replace more eggs with it, then it can happen that the dough becomes slippery and mushy. Recipes with one or two chicken eggs can be replaced directly with flaxseed eggs.

Flax seeds do well in recipes such as.

Buy flaxseed meal or make it yourself - which is better?

If you have time, I recommend you to make flax meal yourself. If you reach for ready-made products from the supermarket, you can pay several times over.

Firstly, in terms of price, and secondly, in terms of sewing materials. The purchased meal is deprived of something very important: The particularly healthy linseed oil.

So the meal from the supermarket is actually a waste product that is sold to us at a very high price.

Not only do we have to dig deeper into our pockets, but we have to forgo the health benefits of linen. Not a good deal.

If you buy normal flaxseeds and grind them yourself, you get more out of them on every level. It only takes a few minutes in a high-powered blender. Blend the seeds on high until the seeds break up and a powder is formed.

However, flax seeds do not become as fine as classic flour, parts of the shells are always visible. But this is not a problem.

What else can I use ground flaxseed for?

It is worthwhile to grind a few more seeds than you need for the respective recipe. Because flax seeds are not only very good as an egg substitute. You can also use them

  • add to muesli, yogurt or granola
  • Sprinkle on salads
  • Stir into smoothies
  • Add to soups

Our bodies can absorb the healthy nutrients from flaxseeds much better when they are crushed. Without biting or crushing them, they simply slip through our digestive tract. But if they are crushed, we can absorb the omega 3 fatty acids and deliver them to the body.

How to make a flaxseed egg?

To make a flaxseed egg, mix either whole or ground flaxseeds with water in a 1:2 or 1:3 ratio. Let the mixture sit for 5-10 minutes to allow the flaxseeds to absorb the water and swell.

You'll notice after a few seconds that the texture changes a lot. A slimy and glibbery mass develops. This is exactly what we need so that the flaxseed-egg mixture can function as a binder.

Flax seeds cannot be whipped like egg whites. So you can't make recipes that require that. Look around for another recipe.

Can you prepare a flaxseed egg?
