Many believe that brown sugar is healthier. But is it true? That's why you shouldn't replace white sugar with brown sugar!

The other day while drinking tea: I want to add a little sugar to my tea and reach for white sugar. My friend waved her arms wildly: "Tell me, do you really take this unhealthy sugar? Why don't you take this one!" She wants to make me understand that brown sugar is healthier.

Brown is automatically also healthy, isn't it? Just like whole grains and white flour, right? Sounds logical or?

But is brown sugar healthier? And what actually distinguishes it from conventional white sugar?

With this knowledge you can show off a little at the next tea ;)

Why it's not true that brown sugar is healthier

Brown sugar is nothing more than not completely refined household sugar.

Just because it's not white table sugar doesn't mean brown sugar is healthier. Because both types have the same number of calories, carbohydrates and consist of 99 percent sucrose.

100 grams of sugar provide 400 calories. And no other nutrients at all.

One difference is the mineral content. This is a little higher with dark sugar. However, it is so slightly higher that it makes no difference whether you add light or dark sugar to tea or cake.

You should not expect any health benefits from brown sugar. Not even for your teeth. Both types of sugar should only be enjoyed in moderation if you want to do something for your health.

Where is the difference between brown and white sugar

Both types of sugar are obtained from sugar beets. So that we can enjoy the sweetness, the sugar beets are crushed and dissolved in cell juice. The juice is turned into thick syrup. And then subsequently brown sugar.

If the brown sugar is processed further, white sugar is produced. This process is called "purification".

Brown sugar is therefore something like an intermediate product from which white sugar is produced.

In terms of taste, brown sugar is maltier and tastes a little like caramel. That is why many like to have it in teas or chocolate cakes.

The maximum amount of sugar you should consume per day

So how now? Is it best to do without sugar completely? It doesn't have to be. You can eat it in moderation, but you should be aware of how much you are taking in. So in one

The maximum amount of an adult woman is about 50 grams. That is about 10 teaspoons.

There are 13 grams of sugar in 100 grams of fruit yogurt. With one cup of yogurt (200 grams), you have already consumed 26 grams of sugar. That's more than half of what you should consume per day.

Now that you know it's a myth that brown sugar is healthier, sweetening your tea with dark sugar won't help. You still can't eat more than 50 grams. Of course, it is better to eat far less sugar.

Why sugar is unhealthy

The problem is convenience foods. Sugos, pizzas, salad dressings and pretty much everything you can buy contains sugar. You're often already over the maximum amount per day after lunch. And that's without even knowing it.

Therefore, my tip: Cook as often as you can fresh and make the sugo yourself. It's very easy and tastes great without sugar.

How to replace brown sugar healthier

There is a whole range of recipes that do completely without sugar. For example, you can prepare many cookies, pancakes and waffles with banana, dates and raisins.

It's best to get into the habit of not sweetening certain foods at all. There doesn't have to be sugar in tea or coffee. It's just a matter of getting used to it. For cakes I like to use Erythritol* or Birch sugar* because they have far fewer calories and are said to be less harmful to teeth.

But the same applies to sugar substitutes: the less the better.

As they say, just eat an apple or a banana when the cravings come. You will see that it helps :)

Our conclusion

That brown sugar is healthier than white is a common misconception. The bottom line is that it is the same product in a different color. Purely in terms of taste, they are a little different from each other, but in terms of health it does not matter.

So: Better times to reach for fruit :)
