Run the small brush over the lashes two to three times and tired eyes are a thing of the past.

Apply a bit of dark color with mascara and your eyes will sparkle.

How to make mascara yourself

There are different recipes for making mascara yourself. You can also make it with Beeswax* stir.

However, this is a bit more time-consuming because you have to melt down the ingredients for it. Our homemade mascara is vegan.

Tip: In the book, The Glow - Naturkosmetik selber machen, you will find many great instructions for DIY cosmetic projects. From creams, shampoos, scrubs, oils, you will find many step by step instructions with photos.

If you're wondering how to get the paste into the mold, that's a fair question. It's not that simple.

My tip: Grab a plastic bag. Fill the cream into the bag. Cut off a very small corner of the bag and then press the mascara into the mold. Kind of like baking a cake. :)

Alternatively, you can also store the mascara in a jar and simply dip the brush into the paste each time. Do not forget to wipe so that the lashes do not clump and you can use it.

How long your homemade mascara lasts

I always make natural cosmetics in small quantities. Because it does not contain preservatives, it does not have such a long shelf life.

Make your own mascara

At room temperature, you can keep the homemade mascara for four weeks. However, it is better kept in the refrigerator.

If you want to make your own mascara, you can either use the mascara in a empty mascara bottle store.

Or fill into a jar - important: put a lid on it and close it well, otherwise your mascara will dry out.

If you like to make larger quantities, you can put the portions in ice cube molds and freeze them.

Then take them out of the freezer just before application and let them thaw. Then simply apply as usual.

Why make mascara yourself

There are plenty of reasons why making mascara yourself is better than buying it.

Allergic reactions to purchased mascara

Very often, conventional products from the drugstore lead to intolerances. The eyes begin to water, are reddened and irritated. Sometimes they also itch.

In any case, your eyes will look anything but sexy afterwards. This is because you are allergic to the ingredients. You are not alone in this.

Very many mascaras contain harmful substances. Even if we are not allergic to them, the effect on the body is not clear. Our eyes are particularly sensitive to this. Mascara often contains microplastics. Let's be honest: Who wants to have plastic in their eyes?

Animal testing in purchased mascara

Animal testing is still the order of the day for makeup. Mice, rabbits and other animals are kept in small cages and tortured. A terrible idea for me.

When I buy makeup, I pay special attention to the fact that they are free of animal testing. This is explicitly stated on the products. If you don't find a note, then you can be sure that animals had to suffer for the makeup.

However, homemade mascara is always the best solution.

Mascara is expensive

Say it still goes? 10 euros and more for a little black paint? No, thank you!

Of course, there is also very cheap mascara but then you will find even more harmful substances. Preservatives, dyes, silicones - we do all this to our eyes every day.

Make mascara yourself

And for what? Just to make the eyes look better. For this we risk the health of our eyes. That's really not in proportion.

If you choose to make your own mascara, it will cost you just 10 cents per portion.

If you like to make natural cosmetics yourself, then you already have most of the ingredients at home. I didn't have to buy a single ingredient for the homemade mascara.

Bad reviews for purchased products

In the Ökotest, many mascaras were classified as questionable. They received the grade "insufficient" and "poor".

In some, substances have even been found that are said to be carcinogenic. Other substances make the skin more permeable to pollutants and can trigger allergies.

Better marks were given for natural cosmetics. This completely dispenses with this artificial nonsense.

But it's still best to do your own makeup. Because then you can be completely sure what ends up in your mascara and especially: What not!

Our conclusion

Making your own mascara is really not witchcraft. In a few minutes, the black paste is mixed and you can start with the mascara of your eyelashes.

If you don't want to give up coloring and thickening your eyelashes and harm your eyes in the process, then you should make mascara yourself. Or at least use natural cosmetics when shopping.
