How to make rose water yourself

In the summer you can find blooming rose bushes on every corner. Or you even have in your own garden a few Rose petals*.

These are exactly what we need for our DIY rose water. Because how could it be otherwise: They are the basic ingredient for the care water.

Especially flowers of fragrant rose species are ideal and will make you look radiantly beautiful.

Tip: Do not use roses from the store. These are usually treated and the chemicals would get into your rose water. In any case, use distilled water. Tap or mineral water is not so pure due to lime or other minerals and limits the quality of the rose water.

There are different variants to make rose water itself. We have opted for distillation. Because with this method you get completely pure and high quality rose water.

Distillation may sound time-consuming, but it is by no means. Nevertheless, plan on at least 45 minutes.

Du benötigst

  • 1 L distilled water
  • 150 g Rose petals
  • 1 Handful Ice cube

Equipment

  • 1 pot with lid
  • 1 high heat resistant bowl
  • 1 dark vial

Anleitung

  • Place the bowl in the center of the pot.
  • Around the bowl, sprinkle the rose petals in the pot.
  • The more rose petals, the stronger the rose water will turn out.
  • Pour distilled water over the leaves. It should reach about the middle of the pot.
  • Now place the lid on the pot upside down. The handle points inwards.
  • Turn the heat to medium.
  • As soon as the first drops of water form, place a handful of ice cubes on the outside of the lid. These increase the formation of water vapor in the pot and accelerate the drainage.
  • Repeat this step until the drip tray is filled or the water from the pot is used up. Do not add new water under any circumstances! The concentration of your rose water may suffer.
  • Carefully lift the bowl out of the pot and pour the rose water into a clean bottle. Done!

Notes

Tip: The amount of ingredients depends on how much rose water you want to make. Basically, the ratio is about 1:1, which would be seven roses to three cups of water. However, the amount of distilled water used does not correspond to the amount of rose water obtained. It is significantly less due to the distillation process.
