What you should pay attention to when making your own face cream

Surely you can't wait to finally make your own face cream. However, before you start, you need to consider two important things.

Cleanliness is the key

Before you start making cream, be sure to thoroughly clean your hands, work surface, all utensils and glasses.

To clean the work surface, use a vinegar cleaner and then line it with kitchen paper.

Clean the utensils and glasses with alcohol and boil them in hot water. Wash your hands and disinfect them.

Cleanliness is very important in the preparation of the cream! Otherwise, bacteria and fungal spores can mix into the cream.

The face cream then spoils and all the work was in vain. And of course you're not doing your skin any good either!

Keep an eye on the pH value

You can customize your cream with a wide variety of active ingredients, oils, tinctures or plant waters to suit your skin's needs and preferences.

Green tea extract, for example, helps with puffy eyes, aloe vera moisturizes and Tea tree oil* has an antibacterial effect.

Think carefully about which ingredients you want to use for your cream. If you are making your own face cream for the first time, follow our recipe for now.

Later, of course, you can experiment with the ingredients and add others. However, you should with pH value test strip keep an eye on the value.

The skin is protected by a natural acid mantle. The pH value here is between four and six. If this value changes, it can have negative effects on your skin.

The pH of a common day cream is 5.5, so it's best to get indicator strips to check the pH of your face cream.

What you should know about making face cream

Before you venture into our recipe for homemade face cream, you should first know how homemade face cream works in the first place and what's going on there on a chemical level.

A cream (emulsion) basically consists of oil and water. In processing, one therefore speaks of the oil phase and the water phase. The cream therefore consists of fats and water.

Because the oil cannot combine with the water by itself, you need a third component. The so-called emulsifier. This connects the water with the oil.

In addition, other care and active ingredients are then added, which give the cream a special property.

In this way, a homogeneous, skin-caring mass is created - your face cream.

But now enough talking! Let's take a look at the ingredients.

What ingredients you need for your DIY face cream

1. emulsifier

Because fat and water cannot be combined, an emulsifier is needed. This ensures that the water and oil particles combine and a homogeneous mass is formed.

The three most common are Emulsan, Fluidlecithin Super and Wool wax alcohol.

We use emulsan in our cream. This emulsifier is ideal for beginners and universally applicable.

2. vegetable oil and vegetable butter

The oil part is composed of liquid oils and vegetable butter.

In the case of oils, a distinction is made between base oils and active ingredient oils.

As liquid oil you can use canola oil, linseed oil, sesame oil, olive oil, Grape seed oil*Safflower oil, Argan oil*, Avocado oil*, Almond oil* or Coconut oil* use.

The vegetable butter is there for you to get a nice consistency when making your own face cream. Here you can go to Shea butter*, Cocoa butter* or mango butter.

3. water

The next basic ingredient is pure water. This should be germ-free and as low in lime as possible. You can simply boil and process soft tap water. However, distilled water is best suited.

Again, you can work with healing and nourishing ingredients and use teas or rose water when making the cream.

4. consistency generator

To give your cream a nice consistency, you should use wax in addition to solid vegetable oils. For this purpose is suitable Beeswax*, rose and Carnauba wax particularly well.

5. essential oils

Finally, you can give your face cream a special touch and property with essential oils. However, you should use the essential oils sparingly.

How long the shelf life of the cream for the face

Since we completely avoid preservatives, the cream does not last too long.

In the refrigerator it will keep for about two to three weeks. At room temperature 8 days.

Therefore, consume the cream as soon as possible. Either stir only a small amount or portion the cream and freeze it. This way you will have it for longer.

Some natural oils can even extend the shelf life. Tea tree oil* is one of them. It is often used as a substitute for preservatives. However, the essential oil has a strong odor of its own. Not everyone likes this.
