As I swipe through my Instagram stream a few days ago, I get stuck on an ad.

Protein bars made from insects are being touted. But what do insect bars actually taste like and can you really eat them?

A little curious I am, even if I have the feeling that it may disgust me. But it's worth a try.

If you've always wanted to know whether insect bars are delicious or taste disgusting, then you've come to the right place. I have tasted them for you.

How insect bars really taste

So: First of all, the most important question: How do the protein muesli bars made from insects taste?

I have tried the oats + insect protein bars from isaac nutrition. There are two different flavors: Peanut Cranberry and Hazelnut Cocoa.

Packed are the insect bars like normal cereal bars. After opening the packaging, a conventional chocolate bar smiles at me - delicious. No trace of insects!

It still costs me a lot of overcoming to take the first bite. But lo and behold: the insect bar tastes really delicious!

I was particularly taken with the cranberry-peanut bar. The cranberries and peanuts have a pleasant consistency, they are neither too finely chopped nor too coarse.

The fear of biting a worm goes away very quickly :)

The hazelnut cocoa bar is a little softer in consistency, yet whole hazelnuts are also present.

The oatmeal and chocolate coating are very predominant in the flavor of the bars, so the insect proteins are not noticeable at all.

The chocolate also dominates the smell. At room temperature, the bar melts quite quickly, it tastes better fresh from the refrigerator.

All in all, the insect bar reminds me of a conventional chocolate-nut bar. The consistency is slightly different, but that is due to the fine-grained oat flakes.

The combination of oatmeal with the cranberries and nuts with chocolate is really surprisingly delicious!

And although I was totally reluctant to take a bite of the bar at first, I completely polished it off afterwards.

What is in the protein cereal bars

The insect bars from isaac nutrition consist of oat flakes, insect proteins, honey, almonds and Belgian chocolate.

In addition, add cranberries and peanuts or hazelnuts and cocoa.

One hazelnut cocoa bar has 85 grams and 247 kcal. 20 g protein and 18 g fiber give energy and are therefore ideal as a snack, before the workout or after sports!

The cranberry-peanut bar weighs in at 235 kcal. 20 g protein and 17 g fiber ensure that your cravings are quickly satisfied and you are full for a long time.

Most protein bars are whey-based - a no-go for many lactose-intolerant people like me. So if you avoid lactose, you can rejoice: because these protein bars are completely lactose-free!

The insect protein from the bars comes from the Buffalo worm. Wondering why insects are so interesting as a protein source? I'll tell you!

Why insects are a good source of protein

Insects can provide us with all kinds of important nutrients.

The buffalo worm, for example, provides us with eight different vitamins, including vitamin B12 or biotin. Vitamin B12 is important for our immune system and biotin for healthy hair, skin and nails.

The iron and zinc from the Buffalo worm supports normal muscle function. It also allows us to regenerate better after exercise.

The dietary fiber that we consume through the Buffalo worm in insects bar ensures healthy intestinal flora and is responsible for a long feeling of satiety.

As a source of protein, insects are also unbeatable! The Buffalo worm contains 62 % protein and all eight essential amino acids! Thus, the insect protein is not inferior to other animal proteins.

The special thing about insects is that they contain a relatively large amount of protein in relation to the calories. This is not the case with any other natural, unprocessed food!

Why you should give insect bars a chance

Although insects are not yet so widespread as food in Germany, eating worms and co. in insect bars offers mega many benefits for us humans.

Sustainability concept

Buying insects as food is much more sustainable than meat from cattle, pigs or chickens. Insects can be farmed in a much more resource-efficient way and hardly need any water.

Compared to cattle, they produce only 1 % of greenhouse gases. Insects have a high feed efficiency and need only about 4 weeks from the egg until they can be processed. This short rearing time saves energy!

Unlike other animal proteins, sustainability speaks for insects as food!

Protection of own health

Another reason that speaks in favor of insects as food is the protection of their own health. How that is meant?

In factory farming, a lot of antibiotics and hormones are used. So when we eat the beef that has been sprayed in the rearing process, we ingest these substances ourselves.

Antibiotic-resistant bacteria can develop and attack the human organism. But not when you eat insects. They are not treated during the breeding process.

Animal welfare through insects bar

By turning more to insects as a protein source instead of beef or pork, you're doing something good for animals.

This is because insects are used to living in confined spaces, unlike cattle. Mass rearing is natural for crickets, for example, they are not subjected to stress.

In addition, the nervous system in insects is far more primitive, so the sensation of pain is not as pronounced.

To become food, most insects are also just chilled, which puts them into a winter torpor, not killed!

Taste and high protein content

Last but not least, the taste and high protein content speaks for the insect bars.

As for the taste, it really stays in the background in the insect bars. I can assure you that you will definitely not taste the worm out. ;)

The ingredients that are otherwise contained in the bars dominate the taste. Apart from nuts or chocolate, you won't taste anything else.

But what distinguishes the insect bar from a normal chocolate nut bar is the high protein content.

This way you stay full for a long time, the sweet taste drives away cravings and you still supply your body with important substances.

These were all things that definitely speak for Insekten Riegel. Well, are you curious?

My conclusion about the insect bar

Surprisingly tasty - that's my conclusion about the insect bars. Although I was very skeptical at first, the bars could definitely convince me.

The chocolaty taste is definitely for all the gourmets among you! The high protein content makes the bars the perfect snack or as a strengthening before the workout.
