There are instructions and recipes that are so easy to make that you wonder why you didn't come up with the idea sooner. Make your own hairspray is a good example.

Depending on the instructions, you only need 2 ingredients and you can start styling. Today I want to show you how you can make a DIY hair styling spray with things that you are guaranteed to have at home.

You'll be surprised how easy it is!

But first, let's address the question of why homemade hairspray is worth it in the first place. You can find the answer in the ingredients list of the purchased products.

What's all in hairspray?

Store-bought hairsprays are not only a burden on the environment, but also on your hair.

The most important components of hairspray are polymers, also called microplastics. They serve as film formers. The higher the proportion of polymers, the firmer and harder the hair becomes - giving the hairstyle more strength.

In addition, propellant gases end up in the can - mostly they are butane and dimethyl ether. These are the ingredients that make us gasp for air when we have a small bathroom and the window is not open. Dimethyl ether is a colorless, narcotic, non-toxic, highly flammable gas.

It is anything but healthy for the hair to rely on store-bought sprays. Most of them take care of it, that the tips become dry and hair loses its healthy shine.

With many natural DIYs, you can nurse your stressed mane back to health. Try this:

What ingredients do I need to make my own hairspray?

Basically, you only need two ingredients. However, I recommend you to use three ingredients. A little essential oil brings fragrance to the hair.

Water

Use distilled water to make DIY hairspray. Tap water often contains too much lime, which can lead to an unsightly white film, especially on dark hair.

Alternatively, you can boil tap water - provided the lime content is not too high. Both distilled and boiled water ensure that your hairspray lasts longer.

Sugar

Sugar provides stability and ensures that baby hair does not stick out. Use conventional household sugar. You do not need more than one tablespoon.

Essential oils

They are a great addition to the hairspray, but not absolutely necessary. However, I like to take a bit of floral fragrance for my mane. If you like it fresh, reach for citrus scent or lemongrass.

How much hold does homemade spray provide?

The great thing about store-bought products is that you can specify exactly how strong the hold is. That's not possible with DIY projects like this. However, it's up to you. The more sugar/salt you use, the stronger the effect in the hair.

The rule of thumb is per 100 ml of water:

  • 1 tablespoon sugar (approx. 15 grams) for light hold: 1 tablespoon sugar (15 grams)
  • 2 tablespoons sugar for medium hold
  • 3 tablespoons sugar for strong hold

If you want to make your own hairspray with sugar, you may wonder whether it attracts wasps in the summer. But the answer is quickly found and is quite clearly no: You need for 100 ml spray just 1 tbsp to 3 tbsp sugar.

But if you are very unsure, then first test a small amount. You will quickly see that you can be reassured and do not have to fear bees and co.

How do I apply the hairspray?

Spray the hairspray onto the hair at a distance of 20 to 30 centimeters. But beware: from spray bottles comes, depending on the attachment, much more or much less hairspray than from the cans from the supermarket. The drops are also often much larger, so the distance is very important.

That's why it's worth running your hands through your hair to distribute the spray better. With your hands or a fine comb you can press protruding hair nicely to your head.

That the hair is mega sticky after application, you do not have to fear. Once the water has dried, your hair will be just as "sticky" as after using a normal hairspray.

How does the hair look after application?

Wet look, dry look? After using Zero Waste Hairspray, your hair will have a classic dry look. Just like you know it from sprays from the supermarket and the drugstore.

If you prefer a wet look, apply a lot of hairspray and then style the mane with a comb. Now the hair dries in this combed form - it looks a bit like hair gel. Only the shine is missing.

What is the shelf life of the spray?

Store the hairspray in the refrigerator - dark and cool. So you can use it for two to four weeks. But be careful - always use a transparent bottle to see if the spray is still good.

Spoiled DIY hairspray pulls threads and smells unpleasant. I recommend that you only make small amounts, especially in the summer. You will also learn to estimate how high your consumption is. In a few minutes, the spray is made up again anyway.

What are the alternatives to sugar?

Strengthening hairspray can be made not only with sugar. There are a few alternative recipes and additives that are adapted to your hair type. Which ingredients you can use for it, I tell you now.

  • Salt - replace the sugar 1:1 with salt
  • 1 TSP Coconut oil* per 250 ml of water ensures smooth hair. But be careful: you must always warm up the hairspray before you apply it in order to keep the hair smooth. Coconut oil* to melt
  • Instead of Coconut oil* you can use olive oil, Avocado oil* or Argan oil* Use hairspray with oil. Hairsprays with oil must not be applied to the scalp - otherwise the hair will look greasy.
  • Shake the bottle firmly when adding vegetable oils to hairspray.

DIY hair sprays for every hair type

Depending on your hair type, you can mix other additives into the spray to create a variety of different hair sprays.

  • Dry hair: Those who have dry hair, mix to 250 ml of water 5 drops of Jojoba oil*. Important: Shake well before application.
  • Invigorating spray: To 250 ml of distilled water add 1 tablespoon of vinegar and 3 drops of essential Rosemary oil* to do this. Apply the spray to towel-dampened hair.
  • Smoothing hair spray: For smoothing hair spray come to 250 ml of water, 2 tbsp. Aloe vera gel*1 tsp glycerine and 1 tbsp rose water.
  • Lightening spray: There are ingredients that will ensure that your Hair lightened naturally. To do this, mix 250 ml of water, 1 tsp. Almond oil*, the juice of one lemon and 5 drops of chamomile essential oil. Apply the spray to dry hair twice a week.

How to keep the hairstyle without hairspray?

If you're going for a natural look. DIY dry shampoo the solution. If you use it as a styling aid, you can do without hairspray and save the money for the spray can. Instead of just spraying the roots with dry shampoo, distribute it throughout the hair and knead it in. Now braided hairstyles, updos and braids will last all day long. And you can do it without having to make a hairspray yourself.
