Why you should start leg waxing today

Wondering how painful leg waxing really is and when to start? This is my experience with waxing at Tina's Waxbar.

Quickly grab your phone and call the nearest waxing studio today. Why exactly today? Well, unfortunately, it takes up to half a year until the annoying hairs all have the same growth cycle. From October to the first shorts in April it is exactly 6 months. So the perfect time to have smooth legs at the first rays of sunshine.

That explains me by the way Tina, the boss of the WAXBAR. "Especially with the legs, you really need stamina. But after half a year it's done." 1x leg waxing per month is then enough to be able to wear shorts or skirt every day. You don't have to worry about shaving every day and you save a lot of time and nerves.

"Most clients come to us in March, April or May, but by then it's too late to have silky smooth legs by summer," Tina says.

No other part of the body takes as long to get really smooth skin as the legs. Perseverance is required. But it's worth it :) and especially if you start early enough.

Shave or wax legs?

For smooth legs, however, most people still reach for the razor. Soap up, shave, rinse off - done. If only that wasn't necessary every day. But after two days at the latest, this game starts all over again. And in an endless loop.

This is because this hair removal method cuts the hair on the surface. However, our hair roots are very industrious and see this as a call to immediately sprout new hairs with full power. Most of the time it takes less than 24 hours. Then the first stubble is already peeking out of the skin. The legs are scratchy and must be shaved again.

Many also get inflammation and red spots on the legs from this method of hair removal. Especially those who have very sensitive skin. And here I have to count mine unfortunately. Since no cream helps, no shaving cream and little else.

Few still make use of the alternative, leg waxing. You mean it hurts? It is not that bad! The jerky pulling out of the hair is associated with a slight and very brief pinch. But that's it. And somehow you get used to it.

I started 5 months ago and am happy all around :) And I'll tell you something: leg waxing doesn't hurt as much as you might think. At least not if you have it done by a professional.

The only drawback: the hair must have a certain length for waxing - from 3 millimeters. Sounds bad? No, but it is not. Because already after 3x legs waxing your hairs become much lighter, thinner, less and are no longer so stubbly. The hairs are barely noticeable. A few days before waxing I just put on long pants and done. :)

And this is how the legs waxing in the Waxbar works

The regular routine for leg waxing includes peeling and creaming. With it one starts (or at least I) about a week after waxing. "Peel, peel and peel again and in between always cream", that's what Tina tells me at every visit.

Otherwise the hairs will grow in and cannot be removed even with the best wax. The hair roots can become inflamed and that can give nasty red spots on your legs.

If my appointment is imminent, I will peel again the evening before. Otherwise, you do not have to pay attention to anything. What you must not do is to put cream on your legs on the day of waxing. This can affect the effect of the wax.

And off we go

Arrived in the Waxbar of Tina, I must first take a look at the great new accessories such as fragrance lamp oils, soaps, bath additives and creams. :)

And then it's getting serious. Pants off and up on the couch, which Tina can adjust in all possible directions. A bit like at the dentist, but much more comfortable and better.

Tina grabs her black rubber gloves and off she goes. First there's a pleasantly scented and oily lotion on the legs, which forms a natural barrier to the skin. Meanwhile, the special wax is made hot in small containers. And then it's time to go. Tina applies the hot wax with a small spatula.

By the way, the wax is available in many great colors and scents. From vanilla to aloe vera to lavender. Unfortunately, I can not choose the wax. "Each of my 10 waxes is suitable for different parts of the body and is composed differently," Tina tells me.

She applies the wax in the direction of growth, lets it soak in briefly, and then a white stripe is applied. Press firmly. 3, 2, 1 a firm jerk against the direction of growth and the hairs are gone. The hairs are torn from the skin with the root and stick to the strip. If you look closely, you can even see the hair roots.

One strip after the other ends up in the trash and after half an hour I'm already done. At the end there's still tea tree cream or aloe vera for cooling.

The legs are still slightly irritated but silky smooth. In a few hours I can also take them out :)

This is what you must not do in any case after waxing legs

  1. Apply a greasy cream
  2. Putting yourself in the sun - sun ban for one day
  3. Give up the sauna and solarium
  4. Fiddling with the legs - this can give inflammation
  5. Put on very tight jeans
  6. Take a shower directly afterwards - do it the morning after instead
  7. Refrain from sports where you sweat a lot, this irritates the skin

What speaks for the legs waxing in the studio?

Here you let absolute professionals do it. This means for you: Quick, painless and no spilling of the bathroom. A nice talk and advice on questions is on top. Your legs will be ready in no time. Finally, there's a soothing aloe vera cream - because after the legs wax your skin is irritated. You can tell by the red spots. But they will soon disappear.

Why it's better not to wax your legs yourself at home? Tina has a clear answer to this: "As a loaner, you can quickly get bruises, instead of the hair also remove the top layer of skin and it is difficult to get to certain places." That's why the professional hair remover also has her hair removed and doesn't do it herself.

"At home, you can also use cold wax," Tina explains to me. But that hurts much more. "Hot wax widens the hair roots, opens the pores and makes leg waxing less painful."

By the way, cold wax is what you can usually buy at the drugstore. However, I have had only painful experiences with it. In the end, the wax stuck to the hair that was still on my legs. Also, cold wax is very difficult to wash off.

Tina's 4 exfoliating tips:

  1. Start exfoliation 3-4 days after waxing
  2. Peel your skin every 3-4 days
  3. Regularly cream the skin with a deep moisturizer
  4. If you suffer from ingrown hairs, also use a spray. The spray contains lactic acid bacteria and arnica, which has an anti-inflammatory effect and helps the hair to come to the surface.
