Stand up Paddling? Never heard of it? We'll tell you what it is. How it makes you fit. And how you can try out the best sport of the summer.
Summer, sun, ...sports? This may sound unusual, especially for amateur athletes. After all, sports are not so good in hot temperatures. And anyway, if you're just starting out now, you won't get a bikini figure any more.
Many think of summer heat rather this: ice and water to cool down. Tanning. Turning over from time to time. And being out and about in the evening without a jacket.
That is also totally great. But we have tested stand-up paddling. The most ingenious sport of the summer, which you absolutely have to test! What's so cool about stand up paddling and how it works - you can read here.

What Stand up Paddling actually is
Stand up paddling (SUP) is a water sport that originated in Hawaii. There it originated in connection with surfing. That's why when you stand up paddling, the board looks like an oversized surfboard.
The only difference: You stand on the board. But the board is particularly stable and has an anti-slip surface. You move forward, backward, right and left with a paddle. And it's quite simple: because it's just like paddling. Just standing ;)
The sport is super suitable for all kinds of waters. So it doesn't necessarily have to be the Pacific. It works just as well on the Spree as it does on the lake. In fact, it's a little easier. Because you have to balance the slight rocking with your legs.
Did you know that SUP is the fastest growing water sport in the world?
And on top of that you get a crisp and beautiful summer tan. Nice and even from all sides.
Psst: Did you know you can get a quick tan with these home remedies?
Why stand up paddling is really trendy this summer
Everyone wants to have a SUP board. But why actually? Well, there is a small and decisive difference to the last years.
It used to be very bulky surfboards that had to be transported from A to B somehow. And then still had to be lifted in and out of the water. What a job.
You should not ignore these sun allergy symptoms!
But inflatable stand up paddling boards put an end to that. They are also called "inflatable stand up paddle boards" or iSUPs. So now you can stow your stand up paddling board in your backpack. Conveniently, you get it for free with most models.
So gone are the days when only those who had direct lake access had a SUP.
Small tip: If you buy online, you can save a lot of money. Most boards are delivered to your home for free.
The must have for beginners
As a beginner, you should always choose a board with three fins. It lies calmly in the water and helps you to keep your balance. Even when there are more waves. Pump, paddle, carrying bag and the SUP board are available in a set.
The board weighs only 13 kilograms including accessories (backpack, paddle, pump).

How stand up paddling makes you fit all around
The water sport trains your entire body. The boards wobble slightly on the water.
This means that your legs are tense all the time in order to maintain balance. This appeals especially to the deep muscles.
How you can build muscle specifically with swimming
You have to paddle from the upper body. You change sides regularly. This puts a strain on the lower and upper arms and shoulders.
Also involved are your abdominal and back muscles.
Along the way, you'll improve your balance with every stroke of the paddle.
Zack, there's your summer-ready full-body program. And one that's a lot of fun. You can't usually say that about the gym in this heat.
How to get started with stand up paddling
Beginners are best to start paddling on their knees. Then, when you feel more confident, straighten up. You stand a little wider than shoulder width on the board to keep your balance.
Bend your knees slightly. Grab the paddle with your right hand and stab into the water on the left side of the board. On the next pull, switch sides.
The paddle stroke in stand-up paddling is divided into three phases
- The immersion of the paddle
- The pulling of the paddle
- The retrieval phase
And if you fall into the water? Well, that's not a problem. Thanks to the non-slip mat, normally nothing should happen.
And if you do, you climb back on the board. Because the SUP board is very wide, you should have no problems with it.
The paddle usually can't sink because it floats. If not, you can put some foam on the paddle. Or sacrifice an old pool noodle.
But be careful: You can get sunburned very quickly when stand-up paddling! Be sure to apply sunscreen very well! If you are very sensitive, put on a shirt and take a sunscreen in a dry bag.
Stand up paddling makes white legs brown
This makes stand up paddling the best sport in summer
You are not yet completely convinced? We will change that now. :)
SUP is for everyone
The water sport is totally easy to perform. You don't need anything for it! This makes it the perfect sport for those who sometimes just get bored lying around on the beach. Kids and dogs can sit in the front of the board and ride along.
On the board and go
Unlike many sports, you can get started right away. In principle, you can't do much wrong as long as you stand upright. And if you don't have any strength in your legs at all, then a cool-down in the water beckons once again.
Or you can kneel down, go cross-legged, or lay down for a chill.
For you and your friends
You can ride alone or with your whole family - including grandma's dog. Why not have a girls' night out on the boards instead of in a bar? The board is so big, you can certainly fit a bottle of champagne there. :D
Available almost everywhere
Stand up paddling rentals are springing up everywhere. Take a look at your local area. We are sure you will find what you are looking for. By the way, we recommend your first attempts on a still body of water. The more the water moves, the more strenuous it becomes.
It is fun
There is nothing to add to that. Stand up paddling is really fun. You move in the sun, you can cool down anytime. There are no sporting goals, maximum distances or speed records to set.
The whole body is trained
Summer, sun, water and a good conscience while feasting on ice cream afterwards. That's quite a thrill, isn't it? Since you can choose for yourself how sporty you want to be on the road, even the sore muscles can be kept within limits. :)
You get a quick tan
Of course this is important! After all, you still want to benefit from the summer complexion when gray days have long since arrived.
And nowhere do you get a tan faster than right by the water.
There are great fitness classes on the board
Ever heard of SUP yoga? Exactly, there are people who do completely crazy asanas on a wobbly board. Also all the others who are not exhausted with the fitness program on the floor - grab the board and happy sore muscles :D
Our conclusion
You have just heard a tribute to stand up paddling. Conclusion: Let's go to the nearest water and get on the board. We wish you a fantastic summer and great moments :)
