Have you ever heard of menstrual panties that you wear during your period and that absorb the blood? How it works and how it feels, I'll tell you in my period underwear test!

We all have them, but hardly anyone talks about them: the period. But fortunately, a lot has already changed for the better. The cycle is being discussed more and more often, and that's a good thing!

Because the period is something very natural. 50 % of the world's population is female. A quarter of them have their period 1x per month. So time to talk and write a little more openly about it.

And what better topic for that than highly hyped period underwear.

The manufacturers promise quite a lot. The period panties are supposed to be super comfortable, easy to handle and absolutely leak-proof. In addition, they are supposed to replace tampons and pads and can be worn just like normal underpants.

Quite a lot, isn't it?

But can the panties really keep what they promise? Today I would like to tell you in the period underwear test quite honestly how it went with me and what you should know.

Why I chose the period underwear test

Do you get like me also constantly advertising for Period underwear from Mylily* and other manufacturers on Instagram and Facebook? A real hype has developed. I can no longer let go of the topic. So I thought I simply had to give it a try.

Especially when I read that a woman uses about 12,000 tampons in her lifetime. Imagine that massive mountain of waste. Additionally, tampons and pads are not environmentally friendly even in their production. And let's not even talk about the chemicals that many contain.

You should be able to wear a pair of pants for two years before you have to replace them. In other words, the same length of time as a normal pair of underpants that you often use.

So it was clear: I want to make my own period underwear experience. Because to reject in advance something that you have never tried, that is out of the question for me.

So I thought I'd do a period underwear test for you and record all my findings right here.

I remember exactly which questions I asked myself in advance and I will answer them now before I go into details.

My irregular cycle

And besides, I have anything but a regular cycle. That can be really annoying. But with the period underwear it doesn't matter. Because if it suddenly starts, I am armed :)

By now I know my body so well that I have a "certain feeling" days before. I can't even describe it exactly - but anyone who also has an inaccurate cycle certainly knows this feeling very well.

Fortunately, the cycle has improved a lot. Instead of between 30 and 75 days like a year ago, I have now settled at 30 to 35 days. And that has been the case for exactly one year.

Helped me Inositol powder*, which I take regularly.

It contains a messenger substance involved in hormone metabolism. Most often it is used in the case of a desire to have children.

But even without wanting to get pregnant, it is a good helper. It makes sure that your hormones are balanced and that you have a regular implantation.

I dissolve 2 gram Inositol powder* in water and drink it in the morning. It tastes slightly sweet. If you prefer, you can also take it in capsule form.

It has consistently good reviews on Amazon, I take it regularly myself and can tell you: my cycle has normalized for the most part.

How do period panties work?

I have the Mylily period underwear* in the test. It is made for light to medium days or additional protection to tampons or menstrual cups.

Depending on the manufacturer, the panties cost between 20 and 45 euros. I advise you not to use very cheap no name models, who knows if they are really tight and what materials were used for it.

But let's first see how the period underwear works. The pants consist of different layers.

The first and last layers are each made of cotton and provide a comfortable feel. However, the middle layer is exciting. It is made of different layers of fabric, the basis of which is polyester.

The material is hydrophilic, breathable and antibacterial. The middle layer of the period underwear catches blood and other fluids and is leak-proof. Biocides prevent the formation of bacteria or odors.

The middle layer is finished off with a liquid-impermeable layer. So everything stays where it belongs and there are no stains.

Depending on the model and manufacturer, one pair of underpants can hold the blood of 2 tampons or one menstrual cup.

On average, women lose 50 to 100 milliliters of blood during their period. Menstrual lingerie for heavy days can absorb about 30 milliliters of blood.

How often do I need to change period underwear?

Made are the panties of Mylily for weak days or as additional protection to menstrual cup or tampon on strong days. So on light days the panties are quite enough.

If you want to do without conventional period products altogether and only use underwear during heavy bleeding, you should test this on a day when you are on vacation and at home. Then you can observe how you cope with it.

Some manufacturers have period underwear for strong days in the range, which can accommodate more. Even with the sizes you can choose here from XXS up to 3XL. The panties are now purely visually even quite handsome. Some are decorated with beautiful lace on the sides and waistband.

However, you should change your panties after 8 hours at the latest, even if your period is not heavy. For a normal working day it is therefore sufficient to change your menstrual underwear in the evening.

However, this always depends on how heavy your period is.

If you have to change your menstrual underpants on the way, you can use a recyclable bag for this purpose and store the worn pants in it.

My tip: Buy a pair of period underpants for the first test. If you're happy with it, buy 2 more and you'll get through the days safely :) You should have at least three pieces if you don't want to do the laundry every day.

How do I clean menstrual lingerie properly?

Ok, a period underwear test is one thing, to wash the used panties another. At the latest here many surely think "IIiiihhh is disgusting". But you know what: no, it's not. Because this is quite normal and you quickly get used to it.

Period panties need loving care, so that the absorbent core of the panties works for a long time. There are a few rules that will ensure that you will enjoy your pants for a long time.

If you want to wash your period underwear, you must

  1. Do not use fabric softener and iron
  2. let the panties air dry
  3. make sure that you do not wash them at more than 40 °. Exactly how high the temperature may be, depends on the manufacturer - some can be washed at 30 ° others at 40 °.
  4. cold rinse the pants with your hands before washing them
  5. use a laundry net

After you have taken off the used pants, it is best to wash them with water as soon as possible. You can do this in the sink. It is best to wear gloves. You do not need detergent. Use cold water. Soak the pants and squeeze them until hardly any blood is visible.

And then it goes in the washing machine in the laundry net as normal. You can spin dry them normally, but you don't have to use the dryer. Let the period panties air dry and they are ready for use again.

My period underwear test

I unpack the period panty. It is black and looks like normal plain underwear. Nothing exciting.

Only in the crotch it is a little thicker. When you run your fingers over this area, it crackles a bit. That must then be the absorbent core that turns the panties into period underwear.

But I am very surprised how soft the panties are.

The manufacturers now also offer models with a light tip or a few gimmicks. But I decide against it. During my period I don't need sexy period underwear, but simply one that really fits.

I found what I was looking for at Period underwear from Mylily*. It has a slightly wider elastic waistband, but otherwise looks like a normal panty. Like most other models, this 100% is made of cotton and is therefore said to be very breathable.

Menstrual Lingerie Experience

How they feel the menstrual panties

First of all, the most important question: How does it feel to wear period underpants?

I was really afraid at first that it would feel like a diaper. You know that from very thick pads. But I can reassure you: A menstrual underwear feels like a normal underpants.

The material is comfortable on the skin and does not pinch or squeeze. The Period underwear from Mylily* is made of organic cotton and very soft on the skin. You can hardly feel the insert.

And although you can hear slight noise when you run your finger over it - when you wear the pants and walk, you don't hear anything about it.

Period underwear fits like normal underpants and you can't tell the difference in the mirror at first glance. They are ideal for light days or if you are unsure exactly when your period will come and don't want to be surprised.

The pants absorb liquid and make you feel dry underneath. So it says on the website of Mylily and I can also confirm. I never have the feeling that something could run or that the pants would be wet.

But I have to get used to the unfamiliar feeling of not wearing a menstrual cup or tampon. It feels very strange for me.

How sport and menstrual lingerie get along

I test the Period underwear from Mylily* on the 4th day of the period, so then, when everything is actually already as good as over with me. Somehow I'm still always afraid that something could leak. I have to get used to that. But I think that's quite normal. Because normally I don't use pads, but a menstrual cup.

I don't like the feeling of it running straight. I'm sure you know what I mean. I find it doubly unpleasant during sports.

With the Menstasse, you really don't feel anything from your period. I think that's why I have the uneasy and insecure feeling. So I combine the cup and the period underwear when I do sports so that everything is really tight. And that just works wonderfully for me even on the heavier days.

Periods underwear in test

The first wash

I grab the worn pants in the evening and squeeze them out in the sink. I put on gloves to avoid coming into contact with the blood. I leave the period wash in cold water for 5 minutes.

And then they are pressed for all they're worth and rinsed again and again with cold water. And finally, the panties end up together with dark laundry in the washing machine. 30 ° is at Mylily period underwear* specified.

After washing, the pants go on the clothesline and look like new two hours later. The next day I can use them again right away and look forward to it.

Why you should have your own period underwear experience

I hope I was able to answer some of your questions with my period underwear test. Whether period panties work for you and whether you feel comfortable in them, however, you have to find out for yourself.

Because it depends on the strength and duration of your period. With light days the Mylily period underwear* very comfortable and a good support for tampons or menstrual cups on heavy days.

Other brands have period panties that can hold more blood and are cut differently. It's best to just try it out. I find the menstrual panties from Mylily very comfortable on the skin. Visually, they are not a highlight now, but I honestly don't care much about that during my period. If you want to feel a little more sexy, you can look for a model with lace.

I like the feeling of having an extra backup to the menstrual cup especially on heavy days, especially during intense sports sessions.

What are the advantages of period underwear?

Finally, I would like to talk about the advantages of period panties. I'm sure you already know some of them from my text. But let's briefly repeat them again.

You do not dry out

Especially on weak days, tampons often give you the feeling of drying out down below. Inserting and removing them feels anything but pleasant. This is where the menstrual briefs are particularly worthwhile in my opinion.

And also on the days before the days. Especially if you are not 100%ig sure when it is going to start and you do not want to insert a tampon or a cup.

Period panties are very comfortable to wear

Period panties feel mega fine on the skin - I can confirm that. Panties for heavy days even promise to absorb more blood than a tampon. So you don't have to change so often and still have a dry feeling on the skin.

You don't have to be afraid of the blood leaking out. Unless you wear the pants for more than 8 hours. But here, too, it does not suddenly start leaking, at first you have the feeling that it is getting wet. At the latest now you should act and change the menstrual underpants.

No matter which brand you choose, all manufacturers have thought about comfort. The cuffs are particularly wide, they do not cut in and the period panties themselves have a good fit.

You save the environment

You can use washable menstrual underwear for several years and only have to buy it once. Tampons and pads you have to buy every month and after use they end up in the trash.

Especially on weak days, you can save a lot of pads and tampons if you use washable period panties.

Good for your intimate area

If you often suffer from vaginal fungus, you should give period underwear a chance. Tampons and sanitary towels are often the cause of fungus. The chemicals and fragrances they contain disturb the sensitive vaginal flora and throw it out of balance.

Tampons additionally dry out the mucous membranes and sanitary pads make you sweat more, which is also anything but good for the vagina.

Period panties are made of cotton, which are very gentle and air-permeable for the intimate area.

My conclusion

At first I was very skeptical about period panties. How is it supposed to work? And how can you clean them at all? But I have to say: After the period underwear test, I am quite convinced. I will definitely continue to wear my briefs and use them as support on the heavy days. And during sports anyway.

Thumbs up also for the fact that you produce less waste on weak days. Because there the panty is enough in any case.

Just try it!
