Did you know that you can make your own mosquito spray? It's so easy to make your own anti-mosquito spray with natural ingredients.

Everyone who likes to sit outside and enjoy a relaxed drink with friends knows it all too well: instead of chatting nicely with your loved ones, laughing and enjoying the balmy evening, you lash out like crazy.

At the same time, you're mega annoyed and the mood tilts. But it itches on the legs, arms and if it goes really bad, even in the face. Mosquitoes quickly spoil the evening.

It's just as annoying when you're actually completely knocked out in bed and just want to relax and sleep. Suddenly it hums.

The first reaction, to pull the blanket over your head, is one possibility. But the best guaranteed not. After 3 minutes at the latest, the oxygen is missing and the air under the blanket is mega hot.

When you gasp for air, the mosquitoes are already on the spot and suck their bellies full.

Actually, there is no moment when you need the mosquitoes.

But what helps against the bloodsuckers? Making mosquito spray yourself is the solution!

It's not complicated and you only need 3 ingredients, depending on the instructions. Today I'll tell you how to make an anti-mosquito spray and how to finally be safe from the bloodsuckers.

Why should I make a bug spray myself?

Whatever you call them - mosquitoes, gnats, gnats, gnats - a homemade anti-mosquito remedy is the solution to your problem. And for several reasons:

Natural ingredients

If you want to make a spray yourself, then you always have control over the ingredients used. Many products from the drugstore or supermarket contain synthetic ingredients that can dry out and even harm the skin.

Especially those who have sensitive skin should reach for the DIY variant.

Individual fragrance blends

Today I present you a whole range of scents, all of which are effective against mosquitoes. With homemade mosquito sprays, you can adjust the scent mixtures to your preferences. You can choose scents that smell good to you and that work against mosquitoes at the same time.

By the way: This is a quite wonderful DIY gift for dear friends. You can mix a spray for the next garden party to which you are invited!

Environmental friendliness and cost savings

Using the same bottle with pump mechanism several times and choosing a high-quality glass bottle not only saves money, but also protects the environment. In addition, DIY mosquito sprays are much cheaper than products from the store.

The ingredients are easy to obtain. For an anti-mosquito spray you need 5 drops of essential oils, with 80 to 90 drops in a 5 ml vial. I get by with a ready-made spray (essential oil + alcohol or plant water) for at least a month.

What ingredients do I need to make a bug spray myself?

Let's take a quick look at the ingredients list. I'll tell you which oils to use, what to use as a base for the spray, and what to look for in ingredients.

Important products you need for this tutorial:

  • Spray bottle and funnel
  • Alcohol or plant water
  • Essential oils

One spray bottle

First of all, you need an old spray bottle. Preferably one with a very good and tight seal.

If you don't have any on hand and want to make more mosquito spray, just order a kit online. Your friends are sure to enjoy a batch of your DIY anti-mosquito spray.

I recommend you put the spray in a dark bottle - either a dark blue or brown one. This increases the shelf life of the ingredients.

By the way, filling is done with a funnel - experts recommend models made of glass. I use my classic plastic household funnel.

The basis: alcohol or plant water (hydrolate)

You have the free choice. Either use high-proof alcohol such as vodka or a nourishing herbal hydrolate such as Witch hazel water* (alternatively rose water, lavender water). A hydrolat is a plant water that is produced during the extraction of essential oils. The effect is not as concentrated as with essential oils and can therefore be used pure.

Hydrolates are the basis for deodorants, creams, facial tonics, hair conditioners and much more. They provide the skin with a lot of moisture and are ideal for those who are prone to dry skin. Suitable hydrolates to make mosquito spray yourself:

Witch hazel water* is extracted from the witch hazel bush. It has a refreshing and calming effect and can also be used after insect bites. Witch hazel water* is also ideal as a toner if you have blemished skin with large pores!

If you decide to use rose water, you will benefit from an antibacterial, toning effect. Rose water has a clarifying and cleansing effect and is often used for cleansing the face.

Who has the opportunity to get a lavender hydrolate, you can also grab here. Lavender has an antibacterial, relaxing and soothing effect on insect sight and sunburn. In addition, the scent of lavender repels mosquitoes.

Alcohol is cheaper than plant water and available everywhere. The most suitable is vodka, because it has no smell. However, alcohol has the disadvantage that it dries out the skin. If you tend to have dry skin, alcohol is not the best choice for you.

Good to know: You must never use alcohol pure. It is always mixed with water. Use it in a ratio of 1:4, i.e. 1 part vodka and 4 parts water.

Essential oils against gnats

There are many scents that gnats do not like at all. On their basis, you can easily make your own mosquito spray and mix your favorite scent.

Always make sure that the oils are high quality and suitable for cosmetic purposes. Some oils are made only for aromatherapy and have no place on the skin.

Essential oils can always cause skin irritation and should never be applied neat. You must always dilute it - either with water, carrier oils (like olive oil, Almond oil* etc.) or alcohol. You must be particularly careful with children, as their skin is very sensitive!

What essential oil helps against mosquitoes?

Essential oils are the heart when we make mosquito spray itself. Because some essential oils can not smell the little pests at all. You can rely on a single fragrance or combine several oils. I recommend that you do not mix more than two scents, otherwise it can quickly smell unpleasant.

The best scented oils against mosquitoes:

Yes, but which is the best essential oil against mosquitoes? You decide for yourself. Mosquitoes find all the presented smells quite disgusting. You can either stick to one oil or combine several.

The most suitable is a mixture of citronella and eucalyptus.

In any case, make sure that you tolerate the oils well. It may be that the skin reacts irritated.

Therefore, you should always test the spray on a single spot first. If it does not itch or turn red after 5 minutes, you can use it without any problems.

Do you rather take Witch hazel water* or alcohol? I have made two blends with essential oils for both variants.

You can combine the fragrance oils according to your mood.

Important: Shake well before each use so that the liquids recombine.

For 100 ml of liquid is about 10 drops of essential oil.

Mosquito spray make yourself without alcohol

Make mosquito spray yourself with citronella

Those who have sensitive skin should reach for herbal hydrolates. They moisturize the skin, are gentle and much more suitable for sensitive skin. I like to use witch hazel water because it feels very refreshing and brings only little inherent odor.

Witch hazel water (witch hazel water) is wonderful for the skin.

That is why it is used in many natural cosmetics recipes.

The only catch: it's expensive. But if you order witch hazel water online, you can save yourself a lot of money.

Ingredients:

  • 150 ml witch hazel water
  • 10 drops citronella
  • 5 drops eucalyptus

Also: 200 ml spray bottle and funnel

Preparation:

  1. Shake the witch hazel water in the bottle.
  2. Fill it into the spray bottle with a funnel.
  3. Now add the essential oils little by little. You can use a spoon or pour them directly into the funnel.
  4. Twist the bottle closed and shake the mixture firmly. Done!

Important: Shake the mixture properly before each use so that the hydrolate combines with the essential oils!

What you need to consider when using the anti-mosquito spray

Apply the spray generously. Also on the face. Here, however, you must be careful not to get the oils in your eyes.

Therefore, it is best to give a spray in the hands and then apply to the face. The eyes you close the best. Better safe than sorry :)

Apply the mosquito repellent again and again. Especially when you sweat or after swimming.

You can easily store it in your handbag or at home. You do not need to store the anti-mosquito spray in a cool place - but you should protect it from direct sunlight.

Normal room temperature or even above will fit just fine. There are no ingredients in the spray that go bad or lose effect due to heat.

This is what you can do if you are caught by a mosquito

The best spray will not help against mega hungry mosquitoes. If it has caught anyway, use heat to prevent swelling and itching. For this you can use a hot spoon and risk inflammation due to contamination, or you can use an electronic bite healer.

If mosquitoes have already got you or if they are particularly fond of you, then you should have an electronic bite healer with you.

Use it to fight itching, burning and swelling after insect bites of all kinds - from mosquitoes to wasps.

With the help of heat, it destroys the insect venom. The body can then easily break down the remaining venom - swelling does not occur in the first place. And you are also protected from the annoying itching.

Particularly exciting is the heat_it stab healer*. You simply plug the gadget into your cell phone for a few seconds, it is charged via the app and heats up. Then place the sting healer directly on the sting to treat itching and pain.

The heat_it stab healer* You can simply attach it to your key ring and always have it to hand. By the way: Made in Germany.

I got to test it myself - check it out here: "heat_it in self-test!"So far, I have fortunately only caught mosquitoes and the "short" program has sufficed. For sensitive skin areas like inner thigh, neck, face and co you can choose "sensitive body area". The sooner you act and treat the bite with heat, the better it is.

Our conclusion

A bug spray is homemade in no time. It is the perfect souvenir for garden parties. Because there the little pests are just waiting until the buffet is opened.

Be careful not to use too much essential oil, because it can irritate the skin.

Have fun making them!
