Did you know that coconut oil helps against mosquitoes? Why the vegetable oil has such a deterrent effect on mosquitoes and how you can use it for your protection, you can find out here.

Summer, sun... and mosquitoes. Especially in the warm seasons, mosquitoes are an unpleasant companion that can spoil even the most beautiful evening together on the terrace.

Or almost worse: you're finally about to fall asleep and suddenly the annoying buzzing starts again. The first reaction: get under the covers. No part of your body should remain free.

Because as soon as a foot or hand hangs out, the mosquitoes suck their belly full. The puncture site itches and swells. Sometimes it can even become really inflamed.

But that's enough! I have heard that coconut oil should help against mosquitoes. What's really behind it and how you can protect yourself with the fragrant oil against mosquitoes, I want to show you today.

Is coconut oil good against mosquitoes?

When you apply coconut oil to your skin, it repels mosquito bites and gnats. It works so well because insects find the smell of lauric acid in the vegetable oil very repulsive. They definitely do not want to come in contact with it.

Gelsen are attracted mainly by our body odor and especially sweat and carbon dioxide in the exhaled air. The coconut oil covers the skin like a film and drowns out its own odor. This makes you uninteresting for mosquitoes and at the same time you smell heavenly.

By the way, the scent of coconut oil has a deterrent effect not only on mosquitoes, but also on

  • All kinds of mosquitoes
  • Mosquitos
  • Brakes
  • Ticks
  • Sandflies
  • Flying

Does any coconut oil help against mosquitoes?

In principle, yes, but not every oil has a sufficiently good quality. For coconut oil to be effective against mosquitoes, you need to make sure that the content of lauric acid is high when you buy it. Make sure that the coconut oil contains at least 50 % lauric acid. The more, the better.

Very cheap oils contain too little lauric acid and do not provide sufficient protection against the bloodsuckers.

Opt for a cold-pressed organic coconut oil. The probability is very high that it contains a lot of lauric acid. The problem is that manufacturers do not have to specify how high the content is.

Choose a high quality product - either online or from an organic store. I prefer to buy it online and in larger quantities because it is quite expensive.

Currently I have this product in use and use it against mosquitoes, for my hair and skin. In addition, you can cook with it quite great.

However, coconut oil is not only a good repellent against mosquitoes, but at the same time a good way to care for the skin. It has a nourishing and antibacterial effect and provides the skin with extra moisture. That is why it is also often used in DIY scrubs, such as this lavender coconut scrub used.

If you tend to have dry skin, you will benefit from it several times over.

Tip: You can also put the oil in the hair. For particularly stressed and dry hair I can give you recommend this DIY Overnight Hair Treatment.

Can coconut oil also help if I have already been stung?

If you have already been bitten by a mosquito, you can also use coconut oil. It ensures that the bite heals faster and provides the skin with moisture. If you are prone to inflammation, you can alleviate it significantly by applying the oil.

Tip: The bite healer against existing mosquito bites

If mosquitoes have already got you or if they are particularly fond of you, then you should have an electronic bite healer with you.

Use it to fight itching, burning and swelling after insect bites of all kinds - from mosquitoes to wasps.

With the help of heat, it destroys the insect venom. The body can then easily break down the remaining venom - swelling does not occur in the first place. And you are also protected from the annoying itching.

The heat_it stitch healer is particularly exciting. You simply plug the gadget into your phone for a few seconds, it charges via the app and gets hot. Then you place the sting healer directly on the sting and treat itching and pain.

You can easily attach the heat_it stab healer to your keychain and always have it at hand. By the way: Made in Germany.

I was allowed to test it myself. So far, I have fortunately only caught mosquitoes and the program "short" has sufficed. For sensitive skin areas such as inner thighs, neck, face, etc. you can select "sensitive body part". The sooner you act and treat the bite with heat, the better it is.

How do I apply coconut oil against mosquitoes?

There are two different ways in which coconut oil works against mosquitoes. You can apply it pure or mix it with other oils to create a particularly effective anti-mosquito cream.

Apply coconut oil pure

The easiest way is to apply pure coconut oil on the skin to keep mosquitoes at bay. This method can be used by anyone, as there are no known allergic reactions to coconut oil.

The oil is solid up to 25 degrees. At higher temperatures it becomes liquid.

Put some coconut oil in your hands and rub it into the skin. Be sure to rub it on all parts of your body that are not covered with clothes.

Once you have applied the coconut oil, mosquitoes should no longer get in your way. As soon as the scent of coconut on your skin wears off, you should rub it on again. If you sweat a lot due to high temperatures, it is worth reapplying every half hour or hour.

But beware: coconut oil can become visible on clothing when sweating and leave grease stains. Therefore, I strongly advise you not to wear light gray clothes.

For dry skin, it absorbs quickly and leaves no greasy sheen.

So always apply the oil indoors, let it absorb well and only then get dressed.

Coconut oil against mosquitoes with additional oils

Mosquitoes can not smell many essential oils so at all. Therefore, the oils are ideal as a mosquito repellent.

Caution: Not everyone tolerates all essential oil equally well, so be sure to test it on a small area of skin beforehand and never apply them neat. Always use a carrier oil - in this case it is coconut oil.

To make the coconut oil even more effective against mosquitoes, add a few drops of one of these essential oils. And I have another tip for you: Neem oil enhances the effect of coconut oil! The oil is extracted from the seeds of the neem tree.

For one tablespoon of coconut oil add 2 to 3 drops of essential oils.

Particularly effective are:

  • Eucalyptus
  • Citronella
  • Lavender
  • Carnation
  • Tea tree
  • Mint
  • Cedar wood
  • and geranium

But be careful: essential oils must never get into the eyes.

ImportantDo not use essential oils on infants and young children. Their skin is very sensitive to the oils! Likewise, pregnant women are advised not to use too much. In case of doubt, consult a dermatologist.

Coconut oil mixed with essential oils and neem oil makes the perfect insect repellent and ensures that mosquitoes take flight. Here are instructions that I always follow myself:

Can I use coconut oil for my baby or toddler?

Pure coconut oil is very good for babies and small children. It is a great mosquito repellent for the little ones that has no side effects. You only have to be careful when you stir in neem oil or essential oils.

For children under 2 years of age, use pure coconut oil and do not add other oils. For children over 2 years, you can add essential oils, but make sure that you do not use too much and that the smell is not disturbing.

Try out on a small spot on the body whether your child tolerates the essential oil - but beware, here too: never apply pure, but always mix with coconut oil!

For children under three years of age, these anti-mosquito fragrances are considered suitable: Camphor, Thyme, Peppermint and Eucalyptus.

What you can do additionally against mosquitoes

Quite apart from the many home remedies, there are quite a few other tricks you can use to protect yourself from those pesky mosquitoes.

  • Get yourself a mosquito net.
  • Avoid perfume, strong and sweet smelling deodorants, soaps and creams. This attracts mosquitoes.
  • Keep the lights off with the window open.
  • Turn on the air conditioner. Mosquitoes hate cool temperatures.
  • Stay away from standing water, especially at dusk.
  • Wear long, airy clothes.
  • Avoid dark clothing. This attracts mosquitoes.
  • Set up a fragrance lamp with essential oils.
  • Put these plants on the windowsill or balcony: sage, basil, marigold, tomato, lavender, lemon balm.

Why mosquitoes love our blood so much

Now you know that coconut oil works particularly well against mosquitoes. But what actually attracts the little critters?

In the warm season, the gnats are all about reproduction. Normally, the insects feed mainly on nectar and plant juices. However, the females also depend on additional protein.

This they can absorb through our blood. And also only then they succeed in egg production for reproduction.

Mosquitoes have a very sensitive sense of smell. Therefore, they perceive certain body odors and the carbon dioxide content of the air we breathe.

The pesky critters settle and before we even notice them, they sting.

They administer a locally anesthetic and at the same time anticoagulant secretion. The human body reacts to this. It releases histamine and the sting begins to itch and swell.

Our conclusion

Put an end to annoying buzzing and itchy bites! Coconut oil against mosquitoes helps really well if you apply it early enough and renew it again and again.

So do not use coconut oil for baking and cooking or for supple hair and against dry skin. It is always worth a little bit of it to have on hand - especially in combination with essential oils it unfolds its really good effect.

All the best in your fight against the pests!
