Do you have dry, flaky or blemished skin? Then treat yourself to a mechanical peeling. Here's what you need to know about it and what really matters!

Mechanical peeling helps to remove dead skin cells, cleanses the skin, provides better blood circulation and a rosy complexion.

And by the way, you can also use it to prevent ingrown hairs on legs, axles and in intimate areas.

Your skin texture becomes finer and the skin overall beautifully rosy and healthy.

Sounds good, doesn't it?

Today I'm going to show you how to use a mechanical peel and which type of peel is suitable for your skin type. There are also a few things you need to keep in mind when using this natural way of skin care. You can find out what they are now.

What is mechanical peeling?

Basically, a distinction is made between chemical, biological and mechanical peels. Most DIY or drugstore products fall into the category of mechanical peeling.

This peeling mass contains abrasive particles. During the application you remove superficial skin flakes and stimulate the microcirculation of the skin.

The great advantage of a mechanical peel is that you can use it at home at any time and usually without hesitation. Face, arms, legs, feet, heels, elbows, genital area - you can use it everywhere.

You determine the pressure during peeling yourself. You decide how intensively you want to clean the skin and what is good for you.

What components make up a mechanical peeling

Anyone who has sensitive skin knows the dilemma. The skin sometimes overreacts even with a normal moisturizer. But a DIY peeling is completely natural - without fragrances, dyes or other artificial nonsense.

Compared to other forms, mechanical peels are free from side effects. You can easily adapt them to your skin type.

The most important ingredient is the abrasive particles. You can find most of them in the kitchen cupboard.

  • Sugar
  • Salt
  • coarse or fine sand
  • Coffee grounds
  • chopped almonds or other nuts
  • ground olive stones
  • crushed shells of fruits or nuts such as walnut or coconut
  • Coconut flakes
  • Healing earth*

And anything that has an abrasive effect on the skin. Also semolina köner are possible, if you have nothing else in the house.

Mechanical peeling application

So you can easily make your own mechanical scrub at home. Because you certainly have at least one ingredient somewhere in the cupboard.

The other component of a peeling is a vegetable oil. It serves on the one hand to ensure that the peeling forms a uniform mass and on the other hand to ensure that the skin is moisturized.

The most suitable are

You give your skin a great advantage with the DIY variant. Purchased peelings contain a lot of chemicals and especially abrasives made of plastic, which then ends up in our waste water.

Completely pointless microplastic. It is so easy to make a mechanical peeling yourself.

Mechanical peeling with brushes and gloves

Admittedly, such a mechanical scrub with abrasive particles can make quite a mess in the bathroom. Alternatively, you can also use a brush or a Peeling glove* to care for the skin.

This form of skin care is also called mechanical peeling. The brushes, gloves, pads and the like also ensure that you remove the skin flakes mechanically.

By the way, this form is especially effective if you have a Peeling glove* and a DIY peeling.

I really like to use a konjac sponge. It is perfect for sensitive and blemished skin, but can also be used for normal skin.

Before applying, you simply wet it and you're ready to go. The rough surface removes all skin flakes during the circular movements. After about 3 months, it's time to change the sponge because it no longer exfoliates so well. Because it is a natural product, it simply goes into the organic waste or rots on the compost heap.

Which peeling for which skin type

The choice of scrub depends on the body part and how sensitive your skin is. Special care should be taken when using a facial peel. In the facial one reaches for fine-grained peelings.

On the rest of the body, it can also be coarser scrub particles. With salt you must be especially careful, if you press too hard, then it can burn on the skin and hurt it. With salt, always massage carefully and gently.

What you need to know about using a mechanical peel

Now that you know the specifics, you may even remember that you've done mechanical exfoliation before. It's really very easy to use and suitable even for those who haven't done much in the way of beauty routines until now.

The preparation

Before you can apply a mechanical peel, you need to prepare the skin for it. If you plan to exfoliate your face, thoroughly remove all makeup residue. On all other parts of the body, do not use any creams or lotions for at least 3 hours beforehand.

Make the skin moist, but not too wet.

Apply the scrub

Apply the scrub with your fingers to the skin areas. I always take about a teaspoon of scrub for the legs and treat a small area with it. After that I take additional peeling mass. This prevents the scrub from falling off the skin and ending up in the sink or shower.

When exfoliating your face, be sure to avoid the eye and mouth areas.

Apply a mechanical peeling

Now start to massage the scrub into the skin with circular movements. Alternate between large and small circles. Apply sometimes more and sometimes less pressure.

On the face, I only use my index and middle fingers for massaging, on the legs I use the whole hand.

Rinse and care

Wash off the scrub thoroughly with lukewarm water. On the legs, I use the shower spray for this, which acts like an additional massage.

Dab the skin carefully afterwards. Please do not rub, scrub or press firmly. The skin is very sensitive now. Don't be surprised, your skin may be red now. But this should pass in a few minutes.

Let your skin take a breath now, and then apply a natural moisturizer.

You have to keep in mind

The application itself is anything but difficult. Mechanical peeling is done quickly, but you should keep a few things in mind.

The time interval between peelings

If you have sensitive skin, then this tip is especially important for you. Your skin is heavily processed during peeling. It needs time to recover. You should give it this time now.

Those who are prone to redness and irritated skin should do a maximum of one peeling per week. For all others: 2 peels per week are okay, but it should not be much more.

After peeling

You made a peeling on the legs? Then don't put on any pants for the next 15 minutes. Let the skin rest and breathe.

Your skin is particularly receptive now and is happy about a portion of moisture. Otherwise, it can happen that it becomes too dry and begins to flake again. A natural skin cream without additives and fragrances is just right now.

I prefer to use a normal castor oil for the skin. It absorbs quickly and brings lots of vitamins, nutrients and moisture.

Attention in the sun

When you do mechanical peeling, you remove the top layer of skin. On the one hand this is good, on the other hand it is a challenge for your skin. You will now be more sensitive to UV rays and can get a sunburn faster.

So don't forget to apply sunscreen and don't stay in the sun for too long.

Peeling guide at home

What effect has a mechanical peeling on the skin

Okay, so we remove the top layer of skin. But what other effect does the peeling have on us?

Our skin is constantly renewing itself, every 28 days to be exact. In the process, the skin cells migrate from the deep skin layer upwards a little at a time. Until they reach the very top and then flake off.

This would be the normal way. But sometimes dry skin flakes remain on the surface and should be removed mechanically.

The reason that they do not flake off are versatile. Environmental influences, hormones, skin care products or skin diseases cause the flakes to stick.

The lower skin cells cannot breathe. As a result, the pores become clogged or hair grows in. A mechanical peeling helps you to take influence here of course. You remove the old skin cells and stimulate blood circulation and cell renewal.

The pores are opened and the skin can breathe.

Smooth and soft skin

Immediately after peeling the skin is soft, smooth and looks very clean. This effect occurs because the dry flakes were removed. Many of these old skin scales we do not even see at first glance. Only after peeling we see the difference, because the skin suddenly has a much healthier color.

With mechanical peeling, you also ensure that the skin is better supplied with blood. Thus, its color changes another time. If you regularly use a facial scrub, your pores will be opened and impurities will appear much less frequently.

And if you are now really motivated, then you can make yourself a scrub right away. For this tutorial you only need coffee grounds, sugar and Almond oil*.
