The procedure

When you order the test kit, it will be sent to you by post. You give your saliva sample and send it back to Lykon. A laboratory will then analyze your sample. You will then receive your results and a summary. But let's look at this in detail:

Do not eat or drink for 60 minutes

You must not eat, drink, smoke or brush your teeth one hour before the test.

Link test and app

On the ID sheet included in the scope of delivery you will find a QR code. You must scan this code on the day of sampling. You can use it to download the app register with Lykon* and link the test to your user account.

Take a sample

Wait

What do I get after the test?

Metabolic type: Protein type

This is what the evaluation says: "Your DNA shows us that you belong to the protein type. This means that you metabolize proteins more efficiently than most people. This means you can benefit from a higher protein intake when losing weight. This is very practical, as Protein-rich foods are very filling." Carbohydrates

You benefit from a low carbohydrate Nutrition. Fiber-rich carbohydrates such as leafy greens, berries and whole grains are crucial for your health and well-being. So they should daily at least 30 g carbohydrates to eat.

30 g of carbohydrates can be found in:

  • 1 medium potato
  • 3/4 cup cooked pasta, rice, oatmeal
  • 2 cups bananas, apples, oranges, pears

Berries are also recommended for Niki. One handful of berries contains 5 g of carbohydrates.

There are also these tips to help you on your way:

  • Opt for starchy vegetables such as pumpkin, corn or root vegetables
  • Always choose wholegrain products (wholegrain pasta, wholegrain rice, quinoa, buckwheat)
  • Avoid processed foods with white flour, corn syrup and sugar
  • Avoid sugary drinks - choose herbal or fruit teas, flavored water instead

Protein

You need a lot of protein to lose weight. "Try to include a palm-sized portion of protein in every meal. Look for variety - such as beans, lentils, low-fat dairy products, soy, lean poultry and fish."

Examples for Niki:

  • 18-20 g of protein in 1 palm of meat or fish
  • 15 g in a cup of cooked beans
  • 15 g in two eggs

Fat

Fats are high in calories and quickly increase your total calorie intake. "Try to limit your fat intake. Choose high-quality sources from nuts, seeds, olives, avocado, salmon or mackerel." These fats are healthy for the heart and help you lose weight.

There are examples here too. 15 g of fat can be found in:

  • 1 tablespoon peanut butter
  • 1 index finger of cheese
  • or 1 small handful of nuts

One teaspoon of oil, butter or margarine contains 5 g of fat.

Tips for Niki:

  • Stew, simmer or bake instead of frying or deep-frying
  • Replace animal fats with healthy vegetable fats
  • For animal fat sources, opt for oily fish such as salmon, herring or mackerel

  • Add a handful of nuts, seeds, olive oil or avocado to your meals
  • Instead of dairy products, choose plant-based alternatives

Vegetables

Niki should eat a lot of vegetables. Each meal should contain two palm-sized portions of vegetables. In other words, more than half the plate. "A colorful variety of vegetables provides vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and fiber."

  • Add some fresh, raw vegetables to each plate - such as sliced cucumbers, tomatoes or carrots

  • Steaming and blanching is healthier than frying in oil. Only add a little oil when roasting or braising.

DNA can predict 40 to 60 percent of BMI. Niki's risk of putting on weight is slightly increased. But she shouldn't worry, because diet, physical activity, lifestyle and behavior play just as big a role - and you can control them all yourself.

In other words, she can take countermeasures by adapting her diet.

According to Lykon, Niki also tends to have a slow resting metabolism. This is the metabolism that runs when we are not moving. Our body also needs energy for functions such as digestion, breathing and thermoregulation. However, not everyone burns the same amount of energy for this. That means for you: Boost your metabolism!

And something else is striking:

"According to your genotype, you have a slightly increased risk of reduced satiety and increased appetite." Cravings also play a role here - so Niki needs to pay particular attention to eating a healthy and balanced diet. Which is safe even without shakes: The next step is to change your diet. Much more vegetables, more protein, less fat and fewer carbohydrates.

The recipes

The recipes can be called up directly in the app. First you have to specify your desired weight, how much you exercise and whether you do sport. You are also asked what you eat and whether you have any allergies/intolerances.

The current calorie requirement is calculated on this basis. The recipes are sufficient for 7 days and are divided into:

Breakfast includes millet pudding with fruit, pancakes and oatmeal smoothies. For lunch, you'll find vegan pasta with fried eggplant, cucumber sushi with smoked salmon or a quick Caesar salad.

I have now let the result sink in. However, I have already started to take a critical look at my eating habits. I already knew beforehand that they weren't the best.

But after 7 days it is clearly too early to say anything about it.

My conclusion

The DNA metabolic test can be a good tool to help you better understand your own body. It gives you an insight into which nutrients it can metabolize best and whether you have a genetic tendency is overweight. You can also find out what type of sport and how much sport suits you.

However, the focus is clearly on a long-term change in diet. You shouldn't hope for a very quick and easy solution. It's about discovering old habits and working on them.

Whether this knowledge is worth almost 200 euros is ultimately up to you to decide. In Niki's opinion, the test is worthwhile for anyone who has already tried a lot but has not yet found the ideal approach to losing weight - as is the case with her.
