How to make liquid soap yourself

Here are the detailed instructions for liquid hand soap. If you have made natural cosmetics before, you will find the A short version of the recipe at the end of the article.

For 1 liter of liquid soap you need these ingredients:

  • 50 g curd soap
  • 1 liter tap water
  • 1 tsp honey
  • 2 TSP Almond oil* (or another vegetable oil)

Also: grater, saucepan, blender, empty soap dispenser.

Preparation:

  1. Finely grate the curd soap with the vegetable grater. The thickness does not play a particularly important role, because we will melt the soap in a moment.
  2. Put the soap bars in a saucepan with the tap water. The pot should be able to hold about 1.5 liters, so you can stir relaxed.
  3. Bring this mixture to a boil, stirring constantly. As soon as no more soap pieces are visible, remove the pot from the stove.
  4. The soap is now very liquid. Let it cool, it will now become more solid - about so thin pudding is optimal.
  5. Stir in the honey.
  6. While the soap is resting, you should whisk it smooth every now and then. Only in this way can the water and curd soap mix well.
  7. After about 12 hours, the consistency is optimal.
  8. Finally, stir in the vegetable oil. This works best with a blender or a Blender*.
  9. Fill the finished hand soap into the soap dispenser with a funnel.
Tip: If you - like me at the first attempt - forgot the honey, you can also stir it into the cooled soap. However, you have to warm it up briefly in the microwave. It becomes liquid and can be mixed better with the rest of the mass.

If you don't warm it up, it will quickly separate itself.

How can I refine homemade soap?

This is just a basic recipe for now. You can refine it as you wish. Essential oils provide fragrance. If you want to get a specific effect, check out this post: "This effect have essential oils on the body" 🥰

As an alternative to essential oils, you can replace the tap water with a mild herbal tea. Simply leave the tea bag

If your homemade liquid soap moisturizing then add one tablespoon of Glycerin to the basic recipe. Glycerin* is a sugar alcohol that ensures that the liquid remains in the skin.

Instead of Almond oil* you can Coconut oilUse olive oil *. Olive oil is just as suitable for skin care, Grape seed oil*Soybean oil, Jojoba oil* or evening primrose oil. If you want the soap to be creamier, use olive oil, Coconut oil* or sesame oil.

With Food coloring* you can use the soap dye. I used a few drops of light green paint for this. But pink, yellow and blue also look good as Soap color* out. It is best to use soap colors for this. But please use very little. Otherwise your fingers and nails will stain when you wash your hands. 😅

A little Glitter powder* provides a special look. But also here applies: Do not overdo it!

If you want to make a Christmas version, add a little more Cinnamon* or Cinnamon*-Add flavored oil.

What problems can occur with homemade liquid hand soap

The soap is too liquid

If your hand soap is too runny, you have Used too little soap. This means: grate on more curd soap. Bring the liquid soap to the boil again. The process starts all over again.

The liquid soap is too solid

Or very slimy. In both cases you have Too little water used. Homemade hand soap is always a little slimier than the soap bought from the supermarket. However, this makes no difference to the washing effect.

If you wish, you can liquefy the soap this way:

  • Bring a little water to the boil in a pot
  • Pull the pot from the stove
  • Stir in soap that is too solid and mix firmly
  • Let cool and see if the consistency is right now
Caution: Do not bring the soap to the boil if it is thick. Otherwise it will burn!

The hand soap does not foam

When lathering, the soap usually foams a little. And as much as when lathering with a normal curd soap.

From the dispenser soap comes liquid. Depending on the brand, it foams in the hands more or less.

Incidentally, soap can also foam during cooking. This is normal. You should simply wait a little until the foam has subsided before bottling. Do not stir too vigorously. 🫡

Why should you make your own liquid soap?

And your first homemade liquid soap is ready and waiting to be used.

By the way, if you calculate the ingredients, you get just 60 cents for half a liter of hand soap. However, this calculation is based on the assumption that you have to buy the soap.

If you have them at home, you can get away with it even more cheaply and do the environment a favor. Considering that soap scraps otherwise end up in the bin, this is a really good opportunity to do something useful with them. 🥰

You can also pour the homemade liquid soap into a screw-top jar. It will keep for 2-3 weeks without any problems. Provided you have worked hygienically and use a pump dispenser for dosing.

Decorated with a bow and a nice saying, you have a wonderful DIY gift for a dear friend.

FAQ - the most frequently asked questions about DIY soap

Why do hands feel dry after washing?

After washing your hands with the liquid DIY soap, your hands may feel dry. This is completely normal and depends on which Soap variety you have taken. There are soaps that protect the skin Degrease. And moisturizingwhich usually contain a little olive oil.

Either use a mild hand cream after washing your hands or add a little more oil the next time you wash your hands.

What should I store the soap in?

I recommend using a pump dispenser because it's the easiest way to remove the soap. I used the old packaging of a liquid soap because the quantity is ideal. However, you can also buy really nice refillable soap dispensers in many furniture stores.

Alternatively, jam jars or glass bottles will also do - ideally they can be combined with a pump dispenser.

Which essential oils are best?

The good thing about making your own liquid soap is that you can decide for yourself. However, rose, lemon, orange, pine, rosemary and lavender are very popular. 🥰

You can also combine two oils to create very special fragrances. However, you should not use more than two, as they can then cross over and create very strange fragrances.

My absolute favorite is mountain pine and lemon. The scent reminds me of nature and is very refreshing/invigorating at the same time.

If you are planning to give the soap as a gift, try to find out what the recipient likes.

Essential oils can irritate the skin, so use them very sparingly. Do not use more than 2 or 3 drops per 100 ml of liquid soap.

Can I also make liquid soap in the Thermomix?

The Thermomix is even particularly suitable for making liquid soaps. This is how you proceed: Cut 100 g of soap into pieces and put them in the Thermomix. Set the appliance to the highest setting (setting 10) for 10 seconds. The soap is now cut into tiny pieces.

Add 800 to 1000 ml of water. Set the Thermomix to 100 degrees Celsius and select the stirring setting. The soap is now dissolved in the water and the liquid soap solution is ready!
