You're lying in bed, about to fall asleep, and all of a sudden it starts humming.

The first reaction: hide all body parts under the blanket. But after a few minutes the air under the blanket goes out and it's mega hot.

As soon as the foot hangs out, the mosquitoes suck their belly full. The beasts are just as annoying when you spend a longer evening on the balcony.

One thing is clear: mosquitoes are annoying! But what helps against the bloodsuckers? Lavender against mosquitoes is the best weapon! Why, why, how and when, I'll tell you today!

What odors do mosquitoes not like?

Mosquitoes abhor many plants, including mint, eucalyptus, lemon balm, thyme, basil, rosemary and lavender. Place herbs in pots on windowsills and near entryways to discourage mosquitoes from entering your home or apartment.

The chemical products that are supposed to repel mosquitoes have a terrible smell. Moreover, most of the time they do not help at all.

If you're bugged by biting, sucking and annoying insects, you should get lavender.

The plant not only smells heavenly and looks beautiful, its scent also drives away annoying mosquitoes. This brings the advantage that you do not have to constantly annoy and scratch.

Tip: Grow a plant

The plant also looks very good on the balcony. And because the smell of lavender helps so well against mosquitoes, you can also enjoy the fresh air on long evenings. And without being tormented by the pests.

Lavender plants are easy to care for, hardy and love sunny locations.

A few plants in the garden or on the balcony keep insects away. This definitely works best when there is little wind - the enemies might notice the tempting sweat rather than the fragrant bushes.

If you don't have a green thumb, lavender bouquets or sachets will do just as well. If you have a bush in the garden or on the balcony, you should dry some of the flowers. You can put the dried flowers on the fixed baking at the open window or on the garden table.

Why mosquitoes target us

Now you know that lavender is particularly effective against mosquitoes. But what actually attracts the little critters?

During the warm season, mosquitoes are all about reproduction. The insects actually feed mainly on nectar and plant juices. However, the females are additionally dependent on blood.

Only when they absorb the proteins contained therein do they succeed in producing eggs for reproduction.

Mosquitoes have a very sensitive sense of smell. Therefore, they perceive certain body odors, as well as the carbon dioxide content of the air we breathe.

The beasts set down. Before they sting, they make sure once again that their landing has gone unnoticed. Then they sting.

They administer a locally anesthetic and at the same time anticoagulant secretion. The human body reacts to this with a counterattack. It releases histamine and itchy swellings form.

Our conclusion

With lavender against mosquitoes you are very well served. But you can also use other home remedies to be protected from mosquitoes. Annoying buzzing and itchy bites are finally a thing of the past. No matter whether to prevent or treat bites.

Good luck! :)
