Hot drinks in winter: Countless calories are hidden here. We show you the most caloric hot drinks at the Christmas market and taste our way through mulled wine, Lumumba and Co.

I know... it's still a little while until Christmas. That's what my friends always tell me. In supermarkets and furniture stores, Christmas has been around since the beginning of September. I'm really looking forward to all the Christmas markets. Fortunately, they start next week. Everything glitters and smells and the great music only :) But I'm still looking forward to the many delicious hot drinks.

Whether at the Christmas market or in the evening at home with friends - hot drinks in winter put you in a good mood and warm you from the inside. On cold and dark days they are an absolute must :)

However, you should not drink more than one cup of many hot drinks. Hot drinks make you feel the alcohol much faster. Many are heavily sugared and true calorie bombs. If you want to do something good for your figure and your head (think of the headache the day after!), you should enjoy in moderation.

Tasting hot drinks in winter at the market

Warm drinks taste best at the Christmas market. If only it wasn't so cold there. Within minutes my nose is red, my fingertips are cold and my toes have all but fallen off. What helps? A nice warm drink and the right equipment.

This is my survival kit for the Christmas market:

  • Thick winter boots with lambskin
  • Mittens with fleece
  • A cap knitted by yourself
  • A thick scarf
  • My thermal tights
  • A thick jacket
  • Wool socks and much more :)

Sometimes I'm looked at a little askance when I tell what I wear. But I don't care: the main thing is nice and warm.

Dressed like an Eskimo, we set out to find the best drinks. The editorial team has received a few nice e-mails. Many of you are interested in the calories in the temptingly fragrant drinks at the Christmas market. So we're planning a research tour: Lisa, Kristina and Lydia at the Christmas market :)

I'm telling you: There are some serious calorie bombs in there. Please only read on if you can really live with the truth. ;)

Hot drinks in winter: This is our calorie check

Most people know that roasted almonds, crépe with chocolate cream or gingerbread with a chocolate coating have a lot of calories. But that also many of the comfortably warming hot beverages in the winter on the Hüften can strike, suspect only few.

The nasty thing about it: You can drink a lot, but you won't get full from it. That's why we're usually not aware of how many unnecessary calories we consume at the Christmas market. Hot drinks in winter are the top calorie traps!

We have looked closely into the cups for you. We have tasted one or the other hot drink ourselves - quite unselfishly, of course ;). We took a close look around the market and tracked down the highest-calorie hot drinks.

Hot drinks in winter

So you do not regret the visit to the Christmas market or wonder why you put on a few kilos, we have checked everything. We start with the lowest calorie drinks, so that the shock is not too big :)

Hot drinks: The biggest calorie bombs at the Christmas market

#1: For the drivers: fruit and herbal tea

2 kilocalories per 200 milliliters

A hot drink for the slim line. If you don't want alcohol and calories, fruit tea is the best choice. Provided you do without the sugar or other sweeteners. Tea you can drink until you burst :)

You love tea? Then this might interest you: "Make Your Own Tea: The best herbs for your tea"

#2: Tea with a difference: hunter tea

104 kilocalories per 200 milliliters

Hot drinks also taste great with alcohol. Jagertee consists of black tea with domestic rum and/or Obstler. At many Christmas markets, normal fruit tea is combined with rum and offered as Jagertee.

Most people know Jagertee/Jägertee from skiing vacations. By the way, it owes its name to forest workers. They always drank the tea to warm themselves at work in winter.

#3: Glow Cider

148 kilocalories per 200 milliliters

My absolute favorite hot drink in the winter: Mulled cider. It is made from apple cider. Sugar, Cinnamon*, cloves, orange slices and star anise give it its great taste.

I love the wonderful fragrant apple smell and the scent of Cinnamon*. The low sugar content makes the mulled cider less sweet.

#4: For rum fans: Grog

163 kilocalories per 200 milliliters

Unlike the hot drinks that follow later, grog is quite low in calories. But beware: You have to be able to take a lot.

Grog originates from Great Britain and the British, as is well known, can take a lot. Very much. So: Grog is not for the faint of heart :)

You can also easily make grog at home. The basic recipe for grog consists of three ingredients: Rum, sugar and hot water are mixed together. That's it.

#5: Attention sweet calorie bomb: eggnog

204 kilocalories per 200 milliliters

It's one of the absolute classics in the run-up to Christmas: eggnog. It tastes best warm, but not too hot. If you look at the list of ingredients, you can already guess why it is one of the top sellers on the "Hot drinks in winter" list.

Stiffly beaten egg whites, egg yolks, rum, white wine, vanilla, sugar and cream make the eggnog a calorie bomb.

#6: Fruity and non-alcoholic: fruit punch

209 kilocalories per 200 milliliters

Fruit punch is delicious, without alcohol and a good alternative to regular tea. There are countless recipes. In our tour of the Christmas market we have a recipe with black tea, orange juice, Cinnamon* and cloves. Thumbs up for this hot drink.

At the Christmas market stand opposite there was also a punch with berries. But unfortunately it was already sold out.

#7: The most popular hot drink: mulled wine

214 kilocalories per 200 milliliters

Hot drinks in winter - I immediately associate this with mulled wine. Don't take me for an alcoholic. But a good mulled wine belongs for me to the Vorweihnachtstzeit simply. :) At this classic among the hot drinks you come at almost no Christmas market past. Everywhere it smells fine after it.

#8: For honey lovers: mead

220 kilocalories per 200 milliliters

Hot mead, or honey wine, is available at just about every Advent market. Honey wine consists of honey, water, wine and spices.

#9: Apple cider with calvados

235 kilocalories per 200 milliliters

Yes, this is also available at some Christmas markets: Apple Cider. It's a great change from mulled wine. In addition to a lot of vitamin C, cider also contains a lot of sugar or honey. Usually also a sip of Calvados for the good mood.

#10: Chocolatey and delicious: The cocoa

260 kilocalories per 200 milliliters

Hot drinks in winter - cocoa is simply one of them. It is served at some Christmas markets. But mostly rather at the bars that are around the market. Perfect for a change of location to the warm :)

After a long walk in cold temperatures, it tastes best: a cocoa with cream. Attention: Here, too, many calories are hidden. Ready Cocoa powder* mixed with milk and topped with cream comes to an impressive 260 kilocalories.

Cocoa warms not only the feet, fingers and nose, but also, thanks to the chocolate, the soul :)

If you want to save calories, you should make your own cocoa. Low-fat milk saves already neat calories and in addition there are great Cocoa powder* that do not contain sugar.

#11: For Ikea fans: Glögg

287 kilocalories per 200 milliliters

True Ikea fans certainly know the Scandinavian hot drink. Glögg tastes especially those who like to drink mulled wine.

Characteristic for Glögg are the many spices. Cinnamon sticks, cloves, cardamom pods and also ginger provide the extraordinary taste. In addition, it consists of clear schnapps (usually vodka), a sip of rum.

The Scandinavian hot drink becomes calorie-rich due to the garnishes: raisins and almonds.

#12: Cocoa with shot: Lumumba

369 kilocalories per 200 milliliters

And the winner is: Lumumba. All chocolate lovers swear by this hot drink. Cocoa, cream and a shot of rum. As delicious as the hot drink is - it tops the list of low-calorie drinks. And by a wide margin. Often there is a nice cream topping with cinnamon powder.

Dangerous for chocolate fans: The cocoa flavor drowns out the alcohol. Three glasses of Lumumba cover the daily calorie requirement of an adult.

Our conclusion:

Calories or not - sometimes you have to treat yourself :) And: We are glad that we were on the road as a team, alone we would never have managed the many different drinks :)
