Throw away piles of makeup removal pads after a single use? That's no longer an option for us! Because we sew our own cosmetic pads. You want to do that too? Here you can learn how you can easily make your own pads.

For daily skin care, I have always resorted to cotton pads. They are practical, gentle to the skin and can be used in many ways.

Nevertheless, they are thrown away after a single use. On peak days, I have come to a consumption of five or six cotton pads. The amount of waste is enormous!

This must be an end, I thought to myself and looked for alternatives. I came across great variants pretty quickly, but I was just not satisfied with the fabric of the recyclable cosmetic pads.

Then why not just sew your own cosmetic pads? If you are also tired of creating so much waste with the disposable pads and want to protect your wallet as well as the environment, then give it a try!

Now let's sew cosmetic pads together - it's quick and super easy! After less than 10 minutes you can already hold your own pad in your hands.

Why you should sew cosmetic pads yourself

Sustainability and environmental protection in everyday life - this is already firmly anchored for many people. In some areas it is easier, in others it is more difficult.

But changes in small things can make a lot of difference! If you sew your own cosmetic pads, then it brings many advantages.

The biggest advantage is the environmental aspect. You save a huge amount of waste when you use washable pads. You also don't use any extra water when washing, because you simply wash your cosmetic pads with your normal laundry.

Another reason why you should sew cosmetic pads yourself is that you can choose the fabric individually.

When I swore off using disposable pads and looked for alternatives, I was usually not satisfied with the material. But when you make your own cosmetic pads, you decide what material goes on your skin.

Plus, you can make them bigger or smaller as needed - just the way you like it. Homemade pads also save you a lot of money in the long run.

So many reasons why you should sew your own cosmetic pad from now on! Well, are you convinced? Then you can start now!

What you need to sew cosmetic pads everything

To sew your own cosmetic pads, you need different fabric scraps, for example, old shirts, towels, tea towels or microfiber cloths are suitable.

If you want, you can combine two different fabrics so that you have a coarse side and a finer one. For the coarser side is then suitable terry cloth, for the fine jersey.

The fabrics should all be washable at a minimum of 60 degrees, but better at 90 degrees, so that the pads are really hygienic.

Then you need a template. If you want to sew round cosmetic pads, then a glass is perfect as a template.

Round pads are a little more time-consuming to sew, but they look better than square ones. As a guideline, you can use the following sizes:

  • 8 cm diameter for round cosmetic pad
  • 7 cm x 7 cm for square cosmetic pad

Then you need paper, scissors and a pencil to make a template. Pins and a sewing machine and you are perfectly equipped.

Now it's time to get down to business! In just a few steps you get to your self-sewn cosmetic pad.

Preparation

Before you start sewing your cosmetic pads, make a template. For a round cosmetic pad you can use a glass as a template, for a square pad you simply measure the size with a ruler.

For a round pad, trace the edges of the glass with a pencil on a piece of paper and then cut out the circle.

Then place your template on the fabric of your choice. Fix the paper template with a pin and then cut out the fabric according to the template. Take 1 cm seam allowance, so you will be easier. You will need two circles per cosmetic pad.

But you can also put the glass on the fabric and trace directly.

Now pin the two pads together so that the inner sides are on top of each other.

When sewing, we choose the simple method. We sew the pads together only with a zigzag stitch.

This won't make the pad completely lint free, but with a little touch up you'll get a great result! Especially if you're a sewing beginner, this is the easiest method.

You can, if you are not so skilled, place the seam a little further inside and cut off the excess fabric afterwards.

However, if you feel like it, you can also choose the more demanding variant. Here you put the outer sides on top of each other and then sew once almost all the way around. You only leave out a part that is about two centimeters long.

Then turn the pad over so that the seam disappears inside. Now you sew the still open part together with a few stitches by hand. The result will be cleaner!

And while you're at it, make yourself a few more cosmetic pads. Because you won't want to use the conventional ones made of absorbent cotton anymore!

How to use your homemade cosmetic pads

You want to sew your own cosmetic pads, but you don't know how to use them? You use homemade cosmetic pads completely the same way as disposable pads.

You can reach for your favorite makeup removal product or you can use Coconut oil* for make-up removal.

But with microfiber cloths, you don't even need that! To make the cloth wet is already enough to get off mascara and Co. It's a little unusual at first, but it's worth a try!

If you've chosen microfiber cosmetic pads like we have, there are a few care tips you should keep in mind. Microfiber cloths hold dirt, makeup, skin flakes and grease until they are washed again in the washing machine.

Most microfiber cloths are washable up to 60 degrees, unless otherwise specified.

So if you do not change your wipes regularly or do not rinse thoroughly, the dirt will stick. But your skin does not like that at all and thus impurities can arise!

When you wash your microfiber pads, it's better not to use fabric softener. It will render your cloths non-functional and you won't be able to use them anymore.

Microfiber cloths are also popular for dusting because they attract dirt. What this means for you when washing? Use a laundry bag for the pads during the wash cycle to keep them free of lint. In addition, the pads will not get lost in the wash.
