Have you ever heard of a step counter app? I'll tell you why you should download one, how the tracker has a positive effect on your health, and which ones I particularly liked.

We all move far too little. Cross your heart! You feel the same way, don't you? We should walk at least 10,000 steps a day.

But how do you arrive at this number? And above all, how do you know when you have reached this goal?

The answer: With the smartphone! No, of course not while sitting on the sofa and watching Instagram :) But while walking, running, walking and hiking.

Your phone can tell you how many steps you have already taken and how many you still need to reach your goal. At least, that's what many pedometer apps promise.

But do you really move more and does it bring anything at all? I have done the step counter app test and tell you :)

First of all, you have to choose one of the many apps. Not so easy. I download several apps from the App Store. Let's see what's available there.

I checked out this step counter app all descriptions and tell you how it changed my life and why you should download it too.

More movement in everyday life

Why it is worth installing a step counter app

We know that we all move too little. Actually, everyone would like to change something about it. But then it usually remains a good intention. After a week at the latest, we fall back into the old pattern and lie on the sofa.

No wonder. If you don't have a very specific goal, it's really difficult.

But don't worry, you don't have to become a competitive athlete to be healthy and fit. Even taking 10,000 steps a day has a very positive effect on your body and mind.

So the likelihood of getting a heart attack or other cardiovascular disease decreases if you're on your feet every day.

But you don't want to buy an expensive smartwatch or forget to put it on in everyday life anyway? And when you need it, the battery is empty? I know that only too well.

However, what I guarantee to always have with me is my smartphone. Just turn your phone into a fitness tracker. You don't even have to do anything. After downloading, your activity will be recorded automatically.

Sounds wonderful, doesn't it?

I took a look in the App Store and had a good look around. There are a lot of apps with a lot of good ratings. That almost screams for a self-test. I'll download 3 apps right away.

You won't believe how many steps you take every day without even realizing it. I'll give you a small example: Even before I sit at my desk at 8 a.m., I've taken a total of 800 steps.

By the time I get home, it's even 1600 steps.

When an app plays pedometer, I know exactly how much I still have to walk or run to reach the daily goal. And that's without having to buy a gadget.

What functions most steps apps have

First of all, almost all step counter apps are free. You can use many functions in the free version. If you want to have detailed analyses and hide the ads, you have to pay a one-time fee. There are no hidden costs with the most popular apps.

You can use most step apps as follows:

  • You can connect the app with Google Fit and Apple Health
  • In a chart you can see how many steps you have walked daily, weekly and yearly
  • You can set your own goal: whether to lose weight, improve health or simply exercise more is up to you
  • In the app you can evaluate the calories, the distance and the time in which you have moved
  • You can share your achievements on Instagram, Facebook, Whatsapp, Snapchat and many other channels. You can upload a picture of yourself and the number of steps is automatically inserted. It works on the same principle as fitness trackers.

The pedometer apps are all very easy to use. You don't have to be a technical genius to get along with them.

At a glance you can see how much you have already walked. When you have reached your daily goal, you will receive a message.

How the step apps perform in the test

I have to say: I give it a clear thumbs up! The step counter apps are really very easy to use.

After downloading, you can immediately get started and hit the road.

I tested them while walking and running and compared the results with my fitness tracker and Google Maps. Surprisingly, all apps measure the distances very accurately. At least as long as you have good GPS reception.

Overall, it actually motivates me to get to 10,000 steps. Especially when I take a look at my phone after work and see that I'm not missing that much.

Since I always have my phone with me anyway, this is a wonderful way to not lose track.

It might sound a little exaggerated, but I have to get this off my chest: The step counter app has changed my life! I am now much more on my feet and consciously walk certain distances before work, so that I no longer have to make so many steps in the evening 😁

Especially practical is that you can use a lot of functions for free. And for as long as you want.

I will now test it extensively for a month and then switch to the Pro version. What are 3,49 Euro, if you finally manage to move your butt from the sofa and do something for your health? :)

Best Pedometer App

My conclusion

No matter which app you choose. They are all mega clear and easy to use. Right after you download them, they start tracking on their own without you having to activate them every time. If you want to do something for your health, you should install a free step counter app.

Have fun trying it out! :)
