The fact that onions actually help is due to the essential oils, sulfur-containing compounds and flavonoids they contain. They have a germicidal and even slightly anti-inflammatory effect. This calms the bronchial tubes and puts an end to coughing.
At the same time, the onion juice makes it easier for you to cough up mucus.
The sulfur-containing amino acid alliin is responsible for helping you get rid of coughs with onion juice.

If you don't have honey on hand, you can alternatively use rock candy.
With honey, however, you have the advantage that you also benefit from these positive properties. Honey can soothe the irritation of the cough.

Onion syrup alternatives that work quickly
When you have a cold, it is important to drink a lot. Cough teas help not only because of the medicinal plants they contain (e.g. thyme, anise, sage). The liquid you take with the tea moistens the mucous membranes and liquefies the mucus. This helps to keep the airways clear and to cough up the mucus.
Your throat will also feel much better if you drink a lot.
Herbs against colds
Besides onions and honey, ribwort and thyme are also effective for cough. Thyme helps the bronchial tubes, has a cough suppressant and antibacterial effect. Thyme oil is a great cough remedy both as a tea and as a mouthwash for sore throat.
Ribwort stimulates the immune system and is antibacterial. There is also a big plus because the plant actively builds up the mucous membrane. Pour thyme and ribwort leaves into tea or boil them into a syrup.
Sage is used for sore throats. It has an anti-inflammatory effect and helps quickly. If it is too bitter for you, add a teaspoon of honey to the tea.
Apple cider vinegar as an expectorant
The diluting apple cider vinegar is a recognized expectorant. Mix 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar with 200 ml of water and pour the mixture gradually on cold or warm (preferably sweetened with a little honey) drinking.
Ginger as an immune system booster
Home-made ginger tea has a similar effect as herbs against colds. It is also said to have immune-stimulating, disinfecting properties: cut a piece of ginger into small pieces and add it to water. Boil the mixture and let the tea steep for 10 minutes.
By the way, also very tasty: DIY ginger shot with turmeric.
Inhalation against cough
Hot steam is good for cough and phlegm. You can use an inhaler or just a bowl with water. If you choose the second option, pour hot water into a bowl. Inhale the steam slowly with a towel over your head.
You should inhale three to four times a day. If you add sage, your mucous membranes will be soothed. Dry rhinitis is relieved and mucus is bound.
Our conclusion
If you fight cough with onion juice, you can be sure to take pure nature. Taste-wise, the juice is not the highlight. But the cough is relieved already with the first spoonful.
Get well soon! :)
