If you manage to lace up your running shoes even in cool temperatures, you will benefit on many levels. You strengthen your immune system with every run and release lots of endorphins.

But especially when it's cold, it's important that you dress properly. It should not be too much and not too little if the run is to be perfect.

Therefore, we reveal today which jogging clothes in winter is right for you and what you need to pay attention to. In addition, we have put together a nice outfit that keeps you warm from head to toe.

Winter running clothes

Why jogging clothes should make you shiver in winter

To make your winter run a pleasure, you need the right equipment. It's not that simple, is it?

If we were to go outside now, we would do so wrapped up very thickly with a scarf, thick jacket, stockings and boots. But when it comes to running, it's different.

Jogging clothes in winter must make us shiver at the first step outdoors. At least very slightly.

Because at the latest after the first 20 steps you will feel warm. If you are then dressed too thickly, you will sweat excessively, which can make you sick.

The rule of thumb is: light shivering is desirable and passes quite quickly.

To make jogging clothes winter runs a pleasure, you absolutely must wear functional clothing. Say goodbye to cotton.

Sportswear keeps your body dry and transports sweat to the outside. You do not feel sweaty and you do not get cold.

How to protect your upper body from the cold

Your top priority when jogging in cold temperatures is to protect your upper body. Your torso is much more sensitive to cold than your arms and legs. Therefore, you should rely on the Zwiebellook.

Your jogging clothes in winter and late fall consist of three layers, with sports bra four layers.

1. the sports bra

Your sports bra should fit properly. It needs to support your breasts and keep them warm at the same time. Look for a model with light padding, because that keeps additionally warm.

Otherwise, as in summer: high support and it should not pinch.

Tip: I am very happy with the sports bra from Reebok, which is made specifically for running. You can order it in the Otto online store.

With these sports bras nothing stands in the way of your run.

2. the functional layer

The functional layer lies close to your skin. Only then can it keep you warm and dry. This layer absorbs the sweat and thus prevents that the sweat evaporates on the skin. Because exactly that would let you cool down quickly.

You can take a short-sleeved or long-sleeved shirt. This is purely a matter of taste and depends a little on the temperatures.

I wear a short sleeve shirt that is very tight on my body like this one from the Otto Shop.

3. the insulating layer

Now a warming garment like a fleece jacket comes into play. How thick this layer is again depends on the weather.

Personally, I take a thin fleece jacket on very cold days, because the material is very warming. But never a thick fleece jacket, in it you get too much sweat.

More comfortable is a winter running jersey. It looks like a sweater and has a zipper from neck to neckline. And it has a small collar. I wear a winter running jersey and have a nice and functional found for you in the Otto online store.

Unlike the bottom layer, this does not have to be skin-tight. Much more than a hand width should not fit between the bottom and this layer.

The thicker this layer, the better it insulates you. What do you think of these three beautiful shirts?

Alternatively, you can simply wear a long-sleeved tight-fitting functional shirt. This is especially on not so cold days more pleasant, because it is simply thinner. I have picked out a functional shirt from Adidas, which you will like very much! You can order it in the online store of Otto.de.

4. wind and weather protection layer

The last layer protects you from wind and moisture caused by rain, fog or snow. A thin jacket made of wind- and water-repellent material is suitable for this.

You have the choice of a softshell or hardshell jacket.

Softshell

Softshell jackets are very comfortable to wear. They are light, soft and you can move in them without restrictions.

The special thing about them is that the jackets are breathable and yet weatherproof. Inside they are roughened and thus particularly warm.

Tip: Always opt for a colored overjacket. The more colorful it is, the more visible you are during sports! This shoftshell jacket from Odlo has thumbholes and keeps your fingers warm even in cold temperatures.

The catch is that most softshell jackets are not waterproof. Conventional softshell jackets or sweaters as jogging clothes in winter are therefore usually only suitable when it is not raining, snowing or very foggy.

However, there are now jackets that combine the advantages of softshell and hardshell.

They are thin, lightweight, breathable and can repel rain. Of course, not in huge quantities, but if you ever come unplanned in a shower, they keep dry.

So that you still know, I have looked around for you and searched for jackets that keep you warm and dry while running. With these jackets you are never cold even at low temperatures!

Hardshell

Neither wind nor weather can take on a hardshell jacket. They are completely waterproof and at the same time can let sweat escape.

So when it's stormy and rainy, you should give priority to the hardshell jacket. However, it is not so light and restricts the freedom of movement a little.

tip: a very good hardshell jacket you can find at Amazon. The Jacket from Jack Wolfskin has a mega practical adjustable hood that protects you from the wind.

Head, hands and neck

Don't forget about your head, hands and neck. A lot of heat can be lost here and make running very uncomfortable.

Head: Wear a headband or cap made for running. A simple wool cap is not so suitable. Caps or headbands made of functional material are ideal. They wick sweat away from your head and don't absorb it.

I take a headband that is very wide and is attached to the Ears extra tight from the online store of Otto.de

Hands: An enormous amount of heat can be lost through the fingers. In cold temperatures, they begin to hurt, become stiff and red. Therefore, make sure that your functional shirt has sleeves with thumbholes. With gloves, the hands are then doubly protected.

When it's particularly cold, I also pull the sleeves of the functional shirt over my fingers.

Especially practical: gloves that you can turn into warm mittens from TrailHeads. You can order them from Amazon.

Neck: For the neck I tie a special scarf. You should do without a normal scarf. It starts to itch and you will sweat. I like to take a scarf from Buff and pull it up to the chin.

What is the right jogging clothes in winter for legs and feet

The running pants and shoes are visible to motorists, other runners and cyclists. Therefore, they should have visible reflectors. The more the better.

Running pants

Winter running pants differ from normal running pants by the roughened material. So they keep you much better warm. And that is important. After all, our legs play a very important role in running.

So if you want to get jogging clothes for the winter, you should not hesitate with the pants. Summer pants are just way too cold. You feel every breeze and the running wind. Much more comfortable is a winter running pants.

Tip: In the Otto online store you can find running pants for winter.

Underwear

Leave your cotton slippers at home. What should not be missing from your jogging clothes in winter is the right underwear. They should also be made of functional material. So you stay nice and dry. :)

Tip: Extra fast drying and comfortable to wear are sports briefs from Odlo. You can order them from Amazon.

Socks

Personally, I like to wear compression socks in winter. On the one hand because of the compression function and on the other hand because they fit nice and tight and reach almost to the knees.

So the lower legs are double wrapped, which can protect against cramps. You can also take normal running socks, this is purely a matter of taste.

Tip: I have found very good compression socks for you on Amazon.

Shoes

On your feet belong running shoes that are made for winter. Summer shoes are not very suitable. In autumn and winter, there are challenges such as wet running, ice, slush and snow to master. Summer shoes lack the support for this.

What should not be missing from your jogging clothes in the winter are special running shoes. They are characterized by the fact that:

  • High damping
  • Wetness protection
  • Breathability
  • non-slip sole and good profile

If you make your rounds in ice and frozen snow in the forest or on forest paths, then you can equip your shoes with spikes or snow chains.

There are already shoes with integrated steel spikes.

What accessories you should buy

If you want to be on the safe side, you should get some extra reflectors. You can attach them to your upper arm or thigh.

The best are LED bands with batteries, which have a flashing and continuous light functions. So the motorist sees you from afar.

Tip: Jogging lights for legs and arms with LED are available at Amazon.

Also a very good and cheap investment is a running vest. It looks a little like a high-visibility vest, but fits very close to the body. Equipped with Velcro, you can easily wear it over as a top layer. You can order a reflective running vest from Amazon.

Our conclusion

If you wear the right jogging clothes in winter, you are guaranteed not to get sick. Don't wear too much, because after a few meters you will sweat. Functional clothing keeps you warm and dry.

All the best for your next run!
