Veggie Time! Today we have a delicious jackfruit burger with avocado. This is how easy it is to prepare vegan pulled pork.

Vegan is very trendy. As a big veggie fan, I naturally join in. There are so many delicious vegan burger recipes to discover. Today I present you one of my favorite recipes: a Pulled Pork Jackfruit Burger.

In search of coconut milk, I stroll past the shelves in the supermarket the other day. Searching, I look through the shelves from top to bottom and left and right. But nothing. And then suddenly - there they are in front of me: Jackfruits in a can.

I immediately have to pull out my cell phone and Google it. Tasty burgers are supposed to be able to be prepared from it. Sounds good! Quickly, the plan with the coconut curry is discarded.

The decision has been made: Tomorrow there's Jackfruit burger. That this simple Pulled Pork recipe will soon become one of my favorite recipes, I do not suspect at this time.

Jackfruit Burger - vegan burger recipe

What ingredients do I need for a vegan pulled pork burger?

Before we get to the recipe, let's take a look at the ingredients. That way you'll know what to have on hand, what else to buy, and what ingredients will end up in your jackfruit burger.

Jackfruit

Have you ever heard of Jackfruits? No? Then it's high time! This burger with jackfruit will knock your socks off!

The jackfruit tree grows in South and Southeast Asia. It is particularly popular in India, Sri Lanka and Thailand. In these countries, jackfruit regularly ends up on the plate - just like potatoes or carrots here. With the difference that the jackfruit can reach a weight of up to 40 kg.

For all those who do not eat meat, but still have a desire for Pulled Pork, the fruit is the secret tip par excellence.

What you should know about the fruit:

  • The flesh is fibrous and remains firm to the bite even during cooking and frying. This makes jackfruit a popular meat substitute.
  • The fruit provides plenty of fiber, iron, zinc, potassium, antioxidants
  • It is rich in vitamin C and A
  • Jackfruits are low in calories and fat

A ripe jackfruit is sweet, the flesh is yellow. Its taste is reminiscent of a mix of banana, pineapple and mango. For burgers, goulash and other recipes, the fruit is harvested unripe, processed and canned. So we can buy them at our Asian supermarket.

When not ripe, the fruit tastes nutty and slightly salty.

The fibrous flesh resembles classic pulled pork in purely visual terms. Not only in photos, but also in person, you have to look at least twice to see that it is not meat.

And because I have really fallen in love with the fruit, I have prepared a Jackfruit Burger. The advantage: Looks and tastes like pulled pork, but is in less than half an hour on the table. What you can not exactly say about real pulled pork.

By the way, I have just recently finished a delicious jackfruit goulash prepared. Check it out, it tastes incredibly delicious and is also vegan.

Spices

Because the unripe jackfruit is very neutral in taste, we need spices to bring flavor into vegan pulled pork. However, I would not describe the fruit as boring at all, because it is precisely its neutral taste that makes it so exciting in veggie cuisine. The fruit can be combined quite wonderfully with all kinds of spices and takes their flavors well.

Because this time it must go very quickly and the taste should remind of Pulled Pork, I reach for a ready BBQ sauce from the refrigerator. It provides the smoky flavor. It is refined with tomato paste, curry powder and onion. We don't need much more than that to season the fruit. Now it's about the burger itself.

Since the pulled pork is already relatively juicy due to the BBQ sauce, you can do without an additional burger sauce.

Whole grain burger buns

I'm a huge burger fan, but I can't do much with the ready-made buns from the supermarket. They are packed with sugar, preservatives and other stuff. They are also very boring in terms of taste.

That's why I like to use whole grain buns. Depending on which bakery you buy them from, the Jackfruit Burger tastes a little different. And that's wonderful!

When I have more time, I like to bake burger buns myself. For this I take whole spelt flour and mix it with lots of seeds. They become just as fluffy as the ready-made rolls from the supermarket, but taste a lot better.

By the way, on Halloween you can make the rolls with a little bit of Activated carbon* color it black, it looks really great! Here, too, I have a delicious recipe for black buns prepared. Take a look if you're interested.

Salad

To add a little more flavor to the vegan pulled pork burger, it's worth adding arugula. The spicy nutty lettuce leaves provide that certain something in the burger bun. I like to mix arugula with classic green salad to add even more color to the recipe.

Onion

Burger without onion does not go for me at all. So that the onion rings do not taste so intense and cover the rest of the ingredients, I reach for the variant in red or take shallots. Both have a milder flavor and provide additional color.

Vegetables

I don't use the obligatory pickle. It's in every burger, but no one really likes it. Instead, I reach for fresh vegetables. A few slices of onion, a piece of tomato, bell bell pepper and delicious avocado round out the recipe.

You can, of course, use other vegetables. Sprouts also look good in the Jackfruit Burger. Or how about a fresh cucumber?

Jackfruit burger recipe without meat

The simple jackfruit burger is:

  • hearty
  • Easy to make
  • versatile convertible
  • a great meat substitute
  • packed with fiber for good digestion
  • also easily doable for cooking beginners
  • vegan and therefore free from lactose and egg
  • depending on the roll - also suitable for those who have a gluten intolerance.

And what goes best with the burger? Crispy fries, of course. By the way, you don't have to deep-fry them. Fries also super crispy in the oven.

But now let's get to the recipe. You must be hungry already :)

Ingredients

Pulled Jackfruit

  • 1 Can Jackfruit
  • 2 EL Olive oil
  • 1/2 Onion
  • 100 g BBQ sauce
  • 40 g Tomato paste
  • 1/2 TL Curry powder

For the burger

  • 2 Burger bun
  • 1 red onion
  • 1 Handful Arugula
  • 1 Tomato
  • 1 Avocado
  • 1/2 Bell bell pepper yellow

Equipment

  • 1 pan
  • 1 board and knife

Anleitung

Pulled Jackfruit

  • Open the can and pour the contents into a sieve. Rinse the fruit pieces thoroughly with water. Pluck the jackfruit into small pieces with your fingers or a fork.
    1 can jackfruit
  • Heat olive oil in the pan and add the chopped onion, sauté briefly and add the jackfruit.
2 tablespoons olive oil, 1/2 onion
  • Fry it until it starts to turn slightly brown.
  • Now add tomato paste, curry and BBQ sauce. Mix well and set aside. The jackfruit now absorbs the flavor and must rest a little for this. Meanwhile, you take care of the burger.
    100 g BBQ sauce, 40 g tomato paste, 1/2 tsp curry powder

For the burger

  • Chop the tomato, bell bell pepper, avocado and onion. Wash the lettuce.
1 red onion, 1 tomato, 1 avocado, 1/2 bell bell pepper yellow, 1 handful arugula
  • Cut the bun in half and you're ready to make a jackfruit burger. Small tip: If you fry the bun briefly in the pan - without oil and other additives, it makes it quite crispy again.
    2 burger buns
  • It is best to start with lettuce. Follow with tomato, jackfruit and bell bell pepper. On top a little BBQ sauce and onion. Cover it - sit back and enjoy :)

Tip: If you like, you can also stuff the Pulled Jackfruit into wraps or sandwiches.

What is the shelf life of Pulled Jackfruit?

You can store the vegan pulled pork in the refrigerator for at least 4 days without it going bad. It is important that you store the filling separately, so not the whole burger. Conversely, this means that you can prepare this recipe wonderfully and have less stress the next day when cooking.

You could cook up a big batch right away, eat jackfruit burgers today and put the rest of the filling in wraps tomorrow. If you still have too much left over, just freeze the Pulled Jackfruit and thaw it slowly as needed.

You can heat up the burger filling not only in the microwave, but also in a pan. If you want, you can also use the oven.

What should I look for when I want to buy a jackfruit?

Attention, it is worth to look carefully. Young and unripe jackfruits contain a lot of starch and are therefore not sweet. You can buy both the sweet and neutral variety in some Asian markets. Sweet jackfruit is preserved in syrup. Jackfruit for savory dishes, on the other hand, is brined. Better look very carefully, so as not to get the wrong can.

In the meantime, the fruit preserves can also be bought in large supermarkets and in smaller organic stores. Here you can find them mostly in the Asia section.

Tip: Some jackfruits are very salty. If you want to get rid of the sour-salty taste, soak them in water. Add a teaspoon Baking soda* and wait 15 minutes.

Our conclusion

Jackfruit Burger is my new favorite among all veggie burgers. Thanks to barbecue sauce and the fibrous texture, the fruit actually tastes like meat and is quite easy to work with. It can be mixed with pretty much any condiment and absorbs the flavor well.

From me it's a clear thumbs up for the burger with jackfruits. Good luck and enjoy it! 😋
