How does yoga work with pets?

It's actually quite simple, you roll up your mat, warm up and do your usual yoga routine with your pet in the same room. Some animals are curious about what their humans are up to. They lie down next to you, under you, on top of you or "stretch" with you and some are not interested at all. You have to understand that and leave the animal alone.

But you can also turn the tables and Yoga Poses from your dog/cat! Take some time, watch your animal and try to imitate the animal poses. You just can't take yourself too seriously :) Yoga with your pet can be really fun and exhausting, it's certainly a change from your normal workout.

Do not forget to warm up

Warming up is essential to avoid injuries. If you have a dog, you can take him for a walk or play in the garden. Cat owners have to warm up alone :)

Lure animal into the room

If the animal is in the mood, lure it with calls or treats to you in the room or wherever you want to do yoga. The little yogi either wants to do partner yoga with you or not.

The "child's pose" is a very calming and relieving exercise. It helps to reduce stress and is good for fatigue, headaches and dizziness.

To do this, kneel on the floor and sit on your heels. Exhale and bend the upper body down. Place your hands either next to your body or stretch them out in front of you. You can remain in the exercise for 30 seconds or longer.

Here you start by kneeling on the floor and then push your right knee forward and place your right foot bent on the floor. The left foot rests with the lower leg on the mat, the back forms a hollow back. Inhale and exhale deeply, then repeat with the other side.

This exercise is very good if you want to become more flexible.

The "tree" is a very popular exercise. You stand up straight with your feet closed and breathe in and out a few times. Then shift your weight to the right leg and lift the left foot. The knee should be turned outwards as far as possible.

Then put your left foot on top of the inside of your right thigh. Hold as long as possible and try not to fall over when your animal brushes around you :)

Cool down with petting time

After that comes the most relaxing part of it all, you can get comfy on your mat, maybe reward your pet too and have a relaxing cuddle with your pet and take some time for you and your pet.

Benefits of yoga with your pet:

  1. It relieves stress:
Yoga in itself is already relaxing but with your pet together it increases even more. If you do not approach the matter too ambitiously :D
  2. You become more familiar with your animal:
Time together is important for bonding with your pet.
  3. It is fun
Normal yoga can sometimes be very relaxing and calm, in yoga classes there is sometimes even a solemn peace. But it doesn't always have to be that way. With little animals scurrying around during your yoga routine, stretching is twice as much fun.
