When you hear winter and sports, you immediately think of skiing, even though you don't like it at all? Then you've come to the right place.

Why outdoor sports in winter?

The sun and oxygen refuel our Energy storage on. When we exercise, we release happiness hormones - which we can put to good use during those many dark hours in the evening.

So grab your jacket, boots, gloves and get outdoors :)

What outfit do you need for sports in winter?

If you decide to do sports in the snow, you will need water repellent and warm clothing. Gloves, hat, scarf and ideally even ski pants should not be forgotten. You stay nice and warm with ski underwear.

If you are drawn to the mountains, you should definitely take a Sunscreen wrap up. Otherwise, you can get a nice sunburn. For those who always have ice cold feet, you can also heatable shoe insoles help

Once you're properly equipped, you're ready to go. These are our favorites when it comes to sports in winter. Ok, admittedly, not all of them can be called sports, but often sun and oxygen refueling is enough. :)

These are 12 offbeat outdoor winter sports:

  1. Sledding

Beautiful childhood memories are awakened when sledding. Whether through fresh snow, through the forest or on a slope - tobogganing is simply fun and you also get rid of many calories. Because somehow the sled must return to the beginning of the slope.
Tobogganing under a blue sky and sunshine is really great. But even more exciting is night tobogganing. You can whiz down the slope on a prepared track. But beware: in the dark it can be quite dangerous.

Great bonus: With the rear light, you can choose from different colors and thus have races.

  2. Horse sleigh ride

It gets cozier on a horse-drawn sleigh. Wrapped in blankets, you ride in a carriage through the winter wonderland. You don't burn any calories in the process, but you can treat yourself to something in between.
A little tip: Don't forget your hat and scarf. Such a sled ride can be quite cold. Especially because you're not really physically active.

  3. Snowbiking

Skiing is so yesterday. If you want to try a new sport in winter, you should definitely rent a snowbike. It's really fun and also suitable for beginners - at least on flat slopes.
In many winter resorts you can borrow a bike and then get started right away.
Attention: Not suitable for clumsy people. A little sense of balance and experience on skis should already bring here.

  4. Ski jumping

Have you ever admired the ski jumpers on TV? You can try it yourself. But this is really only for the brave. For beginners there are small slopes where you don't jump far. But it is always an adrenaline kick.

  5. Snow Golf

White golf balls in the snow? How is that supposed to work? It's simple: In snow golf, the balls are colored. So you can't lose them.
This type of golf is not played on grass, but on a prepared snow or ice surface. You can swing your golf club in Austria or Switzerland.
Yes, golf is a sport. But since you still move relatively little, you should not forget about very thick winter boots, otherwise your toes will freeze off.

  6. Ice skating

One of the most beautiful ways to do sports in winter is ice skating. With the skates you glide over the frozen lake. A wonderful experience and a great change from running in winter.
Many cities have ice skating rinks - often right in the center of town. Check it out. There's bound to be an ice rink near you, too.

  7. Airboarding

If sledding is also too boring for you, you can switch to an air mattress. On the inflated mat it goes insanely fast down the snow-covered mountain. You can brake with your feet.

  8. Snowtube

You can go down the slope in pairs or alone. You sit in an inflated seat that looks like a donut. You race through the wintry landscape at high speed. Not for the faint-hearted :)
In most ski resorts you can rent a tube. If you're crazy about the Kringel, you can also buy one yourself. The advantage of renting one is that it is already filled with air.

  9. Hiking in the snow

You can also go hiking in winter. In fact, it has many advantages. By walking in the snow, your body consumes many more calories. Hiking is especially good when the sun is shining.
So you don't slip, there are special spikes that you can simply strap onto your hiking boots. And you're ready to go. :)

  10. Cross country skiing

For this you also need skis, but otherwise it has little in common with the usual skiing. Cross-country skiing trains your entire body. Because to get off the ground, you have to make a real effort. A great sport for thighs, buttocks and at the same time the arms.

  11. Running

Yes, you heard right! You can also go running in snow and ice. What you have to pay attention to and what the best clothes are for it, we tell you in the article "Running in winter: What you need to know".

  12. Snowshoeing

Endless kilometers and untouched nature can be experienced while snowshoeing. Equipped with snowshoes you won't sink even in deep snow.
For hiking with these shoes you do not need any previous experience. In many ski resorts there are guided tours. A wonderful experience, for which you should in no case do without proper winter clothing.

Our conclusion:

Don't hide in the warm apartment - get outdoors! It's good for your body and mind.

Winter sports are so much more than skiing. Try something new - it challenges muscles you may not have known you had :)
