If you've ever wondered why silver salt shakers turn green: It's because the chlorine in the salt reacts with the silver. The salt shaker turns greenish.

Which salt is the right one to make your own herbal salt?

For the preparation of herbal salt you can use any salt. I always go for coarse herb salt.

Together with the coarse salt, I crush the herbs in a mortar. This gives a great combination of herbs and salt. If you take normal salt, it becomes powder in the mortar.

Why does it have to be a mortar? The biggest advantage is that with a mortar you push the essential oils out of the herbs and at the same time break up the salt crystals. The salt is ground particularly finely with a granite mortar.

Sea salt - fresh from the sea

As the name suggests, sea salt is extracted from the ocean. In salt marshes, the salty water is left in the sun until the water evaporates. What remains is fine table salt.

By the way, sea salt has a milder taste than rock salt. It can taste different depending on the region. Compared to rock salt, sea salt contains more residual moisture.

Rock salt - million years old salt

Millions of years ago, rock salt was formed by sedimentation or evaporation of seawater. Because it is so old, it often has the nickname "primal salt" in the trade. Sometimes it is also called "gourmet salt".

What you need to make herbal salt

1. a mortar

If you make small quantities of herbal salt, you should use a mortar. This is perfectly sufficient. For large quantities, household machines and coffee grinders often come into play.

2. well-sealed jars

In a well-sealed jar, the salt is protected from moisture. If your jar does not have a seal, the salt will soon begin to clump.

3. salt as desired

Sea salt or rock salt - the choice is yours.

4. dried herbs

I collect the herbs throughout the year. The start is always violets and primroses. After drying, I store them in sealable jars. All separately from each other. Attention: Do not dry herbs in direct sunlight. They can lose a lot of flavors.
