When is the full moon in 2021 and when is the next new moon? If you're wondering, you've come to the right place!

The moon has a great influence on the earth, on our life and you can even direct activities according to moon phases.

Some days it's worth cutting your hair, others it's worth planting a tree, my grandma used to say. But I just love to watch the moon and see how it goes through the different phases.

But when is the full moon in 2021 and when does the new moon begin?

Here you can find exact information about new moon and full moon with date and time.

Why you should know when the full moon is in 2021

Is it all humbug? No way! The phases of the moon have a great influence on the earth. This can be seen quite clearly in the tides of the sea. The moon controls high and low tide. Some animals align their mating behavior with the moon and some people sleep worse when the moon is full.

As the moon orbits the Earth every day, we feel its effects all the way into our bedrooms. Did you know that the moon even stabilizes the climate on Earth? Some researchers believe that the emergence of life would have been much more difficult without this celestial body.

When the moon is full and at what time a new moon is imminent is written in the lunar calendar.

You can read in it when the celestial body can be seen in its full extent on earth and when we only get to see a very small crescent. Once a month, the moon even "disappears" for our eyes - namely when there is a new moon.

And at what time is the moon in full splendor? Yes, the question when is full moon 2021 is not only related to the date, but also the time. At which time the moon can be seen completely full changes. Just as the rising and setting times take place at a different time every day.

Does the full moon affect our sleep?

If you get up in the morning feeling tired, you immediately look at the lunar calendar. Ah, full moon - no wonder. But is it true?

I have often asked myself that. Because in fact I have the feeling to sleep worse at this event. But because I do not feel like it at the full moon 2021 and want to know once and for all, I went in search of studies.

One of the few studies, is from the year 2013 and comes from the University Hospital Basel in Switzerland. Here, it was found that the length of deep sleep is shorter and that many also find it more difficult to fall asleep.

Whether it's better to garden, cut your hair, or chop down a tree on certain days, I couldn't find any studies on that. But actually it does not matter. Also in 2021 the full moon will be wonderful to observe and offer beautiful moon phases.

When is full moon 2021 - Twelve times!

This year, the full moon is in the sky a full twelve times. A lunar phase lasts exactly 29 days, 12 hours and 43 minutes. The cycle of the moon is thus somewhat shorter than an average month. Therefore it can happen that there are two full moons in some months. There is even an own term for this - this phenomenon is called "Blue Moon" or "Blue Moon". By the way, the last time this happened was in October 2020. There will be no Blue Moon in 2021.

The four phases of the moon

We now know: A lunar cycle lasts 29 days and almost 13 hours. During this time, the moon passes through these four phases:

  • New Moon
  • waxing moon
  • Full moon
  • waning moon

These phases occur because the moon reflects the light that the sun casts on it. It moves around the earth, which moves around the sun. Depending on the position of the celestial bodies in relation to each other, we can either see the entire surface of the moon (full moon) or only a part.

At new moon no sunlight falls on the moon at all. It is therefore invisible to us. The nights around the new moon are also very dark, because the moon is hardly visible.

If we see a full moon in 2021, it is because the moon is directly opposite the sun as seen from Earth. On the nights before and after it appears less or more full.

Special events around the full moon 2021

This year is very exciting for all who like to look at the stars. Supermoon, solar eclipse and lunar eclipse are waiting.

Full moon 2021

When is the supermoon in 2021?

Do you remember the supermoon in April 2020? The moon was crazy big to see. Simply beautiful. However, a supermoon is not a fixed astronomical term.

The celestial body is only colloquially called this when it is particularly large and bright to see. On such days, the moon appears seven percent larger than normal. The reason for this is quickly found: It is in perigee - that is, "close to the Earth." On these days, the moon is closer than ever - only 360,000 kilometers away.

The moon does not orbit uniformly around the earth, but in elliptical orbits. Thus, the distance between the Earth and the Moon is constantly changing. The point in time when the moon is particularly far away from us, by the way, is called "apogee" - i.e. "far from the earth". The moon is then also called a minimoon.

A supermoon awaits us on May 26, 2021 at 12:14 p.m. - distance to Earth: 357,462 km. And the next time on July 13, 2022 at 7:37 p.m. - distance to Earth: 357,418 km.

Two solar and lunar eclipses in 2021

Already on May 26 there is the first total lunar eclipse. Unfortunately, it cannot be seen from Europe.

On June 10, you can look forward to an annular solar eclipse - but only in the northern polar region. If you live on Sylt, you can look forward to a partial eclipse of the sun by 21 percent.

On November 19, a penumbral lunar eclipse awaits us. And on December 4, a total solar eclipse, which we unfortunately cannot see in Europe either.

Our conclusion

When is the full moon in 2021? This is exciting for all those who follow the lunar calendar but also for those who would like to take a hike one day during the full moon. I have a lot planned this year and will certainly adapt one or the other activity to the phases of the moon.
